Kampong Ayer is a village located on stilts in the Brunei River that has a current population of 30,000 residents. In the past, residents could easily access resources from the surrounding wilderness. Now, transportation options have made traveling easier. Currently, residents maintain cleanliness by sweeping litter and burning it, however this pollutes the air. In the past, bridges between houses were dangerous wooden structures, but they have since been replaced with safer concrete pillars. Preserving the environment is an ongoing challenge, and residents have proposed organizing litter collection events and reducing tree cutting to help address this.
