Film opening Sequence
• Based on these two
questions we found out
that the majority of
people who answered our
survey were female and
of the age 15-17.
• Since these results are
based on them, we
believe that they could be
considered as our
primary audience and we
should make our film
cater to their needs,
while the people aged 18-
24 will be our secondary
audience
Sex: Age:
 As you can see majority of the people, females
aged 15-17, who answered our survey expect
to see suspense in a thriller film with mystery
coming next.
 This may be like this because it is what is
normally seen in thriller films and suspense is
one of the main conventions of a thriller film.
 This may also be like this because suspense
and mystery are what interest them the most
and are what makes them want to watch a
thriller film. And because it relates to the
intellectual pleasure of solving an enigma.
 With this we can conclude that in order for our
film to be enjoyed and watched by our target
audience we have to make sure that it is full
of suspense and mystery, which it does have
and we have to make sure that our film has
an enigma to be solved.
 As you can see from the graph, majority of the
people, female 15-17, said that the feeling they
get from watching thriller films is thrill with
uneasiness following after it.
 They most likely chose this because the main
convention of a thriller, in terms of visceral
pleasure, is to make the audience sit on the
edge of their seats with excitement and
pleasure.
 It could also be this way since thriller films
satisfy audiences needs of entertainment and
social interaction when it comes to uses and
gratifications. It also could fulfill the needs of
audiences who on the top of the hierarchy of
needs, self-actualization stage, that turn to
thriller films to fulfill their needs of problem
solving, creativity or even lack of prejudice.
 Therefore, we have to make sure that just
from our opening sequence the audience are
already able to feel this way.
 As you can see, majority of the people,
females 15-17, do like our idea and
only a few don’t like it which is fine.
 This is most likely the case because
our production follows the convention
of thriller films but the flash forward
and disrupted narrative is what make
it different, which is something that
our audience like as it is ‘repetition
and difference’ (Steve Neal). The fact
that it does this means that it could
serve as our auteur stamp.
 Based on this, it is safe to say that we
can keep our opening sequence the
way it is as it already seems to interest
them and is something they would like
to see.
 As you can see majority of the people,
female 15-17, do like the idea of our film
title.
 Based on this, we can now say that our
title idea of it being 18 to represent the age
and number of hours our film takes place is
good and is what we can use as the title of
our film. 18 also represents the time in our
life when we become adults making it
iconic. It represents the freedom to do what
we want which links to our narrative.
 We have not mentioned this yet but the
crime the main character committed was
that she killed her best friend because her
best friend turned out to be someone who
has been trying to kill her. This is why 18
also represents the number of years they
have been friends (they were friends since
birth)
 This graph shows what majority of the
people prefer when it comes to how the
number 18 will be expressed in our title,
in other words how it will be written.
 Since majority of them prefer the number
to be written out in words meaning our
title to be “eighteen,” we should make
sure that we use it as our title, which we
will.
 They most likely like it like this because
its clearer and looks better than the other
two. However, most importantly they
most likely did this because having a
worded title is more conventional as it is
seen almost all genres.
 As you can see from the graph, it is clear that
majority of the people, female 15-17, chose the 3rd
font option as the one they liked best.
 The reason for this could be because it is the most
young looking and most eye-catching because it
looks like many things are happening at once and is
a combination of different elements to make the
font. It is also more feminine meaning we should
use it as they are our target audience.
 The font also connotes the complexity of the plot
and the relationship between the two friends. Not
only this but the line that connects connotes the
tension of their relationship and how it will end due
to the fact that one is shorter than the other. Not
only this but it does make a postmodern reference
to other television shows specifically Pretty Little
Liars.
 With this we can say that this will be the font that
we will use for the title of our film. We also like this
title because all the lines coming out of the letters
could symbolize the friendship of the two girls, so to
make it better we just have to add a few more lines
to the other letters just so the lines don’t look out of
place.
 As you can see from the graph majority of
the people would prefer the pace of our
opening sequence to be both fast and slow.
 This is most likely the case due to the fact
that having a mix of both would make it
more interesting and entertaining.
 It would also show the different times, like
before the title our film could be fast paced
and then after it can be slow to show how
the scene after the title happened before the
scenes before the title. Not only this but the
fast paced part of the film would represent
the disequilibrium stage of our narrative
while the slow paced parts would represent
the equilibrium stage of our narrative.
 With this we can conclude that in order to
satisfy the needs of our audience we should
make sure that the pace of our opening
sequence is both fast and slow.
 As you can see from the graph majority of
the people think that the best place for the
crime in our film to happen is the woods.
 This may be because the woods is the most
mysterious and is normally where crimes
would most likely happen and would be
the most believable since its isolated. This
is because the darkness and endless trees
show that there is now sign of people
around and difficulty to escape.
 Based on this, we can therefore say that
we can keep our original idea of having the
crime happen in the woods because its
what our audience prefer as well and we
have to make sure that the woods we use
show the repertoire of elements of an
isolated setting some of which are
mentioned above.
 As you can see, this graph shows that
majority of the people who answered
out survey believe that the best object
to use all through out our opening
sequence would be either a shoe or a
hair clip.
 This means that the object that we
should use to associate it with the
main character would be either a shoe
or a hair clip. We have decided to
make the object a shoe. This links to
Butler’s Gender Performance Theory
since women use it to show femininity
which will make our audience
associate the victim as being female
due to this feminine item.
 This graph tells us that the lighting
our audience would want to see in our
film is low key lighting.
 This is most likely because low key
lighting is a convention of the thriller
genre and because it would make it
more dramatic but suspenseful as well.
 With this we can conclude that the
lighting that would be most useful to
us when it comes to our films opening
sequence would be low key lighting
which is exactly what we were
thinking of using in the first place.
 As you can see from the pie chart, majority
of the people believe that the camera angle
our main character should be shot as is the
eye-line view angle.
 This is most likely the case because it looks
the most normal and would be the clearest
way to see the character. Doing this would
create personal identity with the female
protagonist. However, the fact that we will
do it with both female characters could
confuse the audience as they won’t know if
they are identifying with the victim or the
killer creating suspense and intellectual
pleasure.
 Since low angle was chosen as their second
choice, we could use both eye-line view and
low angle to shot our main character. The
low angle could be used to show the
subversion of the stereotype of women
since it will show her dominance
 As you can see, majority of the people
think that the best camera shot for use
to use would be medium close ups.
 This is most likely the case because they
will be able to clearly see the face of the
character since its from the shoulders
above but at the same time since its not
too close they will also be able to see the
setting of the film. The medium close ups
connote the pressure the characters are
under creating more tension for the
audience but also representing the
tension of the friendship of the two
friends.
 Based on this we can conclude that the
camera shot we should use the most
would be medium close ups followed by
long shots
 As you can see, majority of the people
think that the camera movement we
should use most in our opening
sequence is Pan.
 This is most likely because pan and
tracking are conventions of a thriller
film due to the fact that it connotes the
idea of being followed and watched.
 With this we can conclude that at
certain parts of the opening sequence
should have the camera movement of a
pan with tracking as well since it is the
second movement chosen.
 We will keep our opening sequence
 Our title will be “Eighteen”
 We will use this font
 The crime will happen in the woods
 The object that will be associated with the main character will be a shoe
 Our film will consist of low key lighting
 The camera angle that we will use for the main character will be eye-line view
 Majority of our film will consist of Medium Close Ups and Long Shots
 The camera movement that will be seen most will be tracking and panning

Final questionnaire analysis

  • 2. • Based on these two questions we found out that the majority of people who answered our survey were female and of the age 15-17. • Since these results are based on them, we believe that they could be considered as our primary audience and we should make our film cater to their needs, while the people aged 18- 24 will be our secondary audience Sex: Age:
  • 3.  As you can see majority of the people, females aged 15-17, who answered our survey expect to see suspense in a thriller film with mystery coming next.  This may be like this because it is what is normally seen in thriller films and suspense is one of the main conventions of a thriller film.  This may also be like this because suspense and mystery are what interest them the most and are what makes them want to watch a thriller film. And because it relates to the intellectual pleasure of solving an enigma.  With this we can conclude that in order for our film to be enjoyed and watched by our target audience we have to make sure that it is full of suspense and mystery, which it does have and we have to make sure that our film has an enigma to be solved.
  • 4.  As you can see from the graph, majority of the people, female 15-17, said that the feeling they get from watching thriller films is thrill with uneasiness following after it.  They most likely chose this because the main convention of a thriller, in terms of visceral pleasure, is to make the audience sit on the edge of their seats with excitement and pleasure.  It could also be this way since thriller films satisfy audiences needs of entertainment and social interaction when it comes to uses and gratifications. It also could fulfill the needs of audiences who on the top of the hierarchy of needs, self-actualization stage, that turn to thriller films to fulfill their needs of problem solving, creativity or even lack of prejudice.  Therefore, we have to make sure that just from our opening sequence the audience are already able to feel this way.
  • 5.  As you can see, majority of the people, females 15-17, do like our idea and only a few don’t like it which is fine.  This is most likely the case because our production follows the convention of thriller films but the flash forward and disrupted narrative is what make it different, which is something that our audience like as it is ‘repetition and difference’ (Steve Neal). The fact that it does this means that it could serve as our auteur stamp.  Based on this, it is safe to say that we can keep our opening sequence the way it is as it already seems to interest them and is something they would like to see.
  • 6.  As you can see majority of the people, female 15-17, do like the idea of our film title.  Based on this, we can now say that our title idea of it being 18 to represent the age and number of hours our film takes place is good and is what we can use as the title of our film. 18 also represents the time in our life when we become adults making it iconic. It represents the freedom to do what we want which links to our narrative.  We have not mentioned this yet but the crime the main character committed was that she killed her best friend because her best friend turned out to be someone who has been trying to kill her. This is why 18 also represents the number of years they have been friends (they were friends since birth)
  • 7.  This graph shows what majority of the people prefer when it comes to how the number 18 will be expressed in our title, in other words how it will be written.  Since majority of them prefer the number to be written out in words meaning our title to be “eighteen,” we should make sure that we use it as our title, which we will.  They most likely like it like this because its clearer and looks better than the other two. However, most importantly they most likely did this because having a worded title is more conventional as it is seen almost all genres.
  • 8.
  • 9.  As you can see from the graph, it is clear that majority of the people, female 15-17, chose the 3rd font option as the one they liked best.  The reason for this could be because it is the most young looking and most eye-catching because it looks like many things are happening at once and is a combination of different elements to make the font. It is also more feminine meaning we should use it as they are our target audience.  The font also connotes the complexity of the plot and the relationship between the two friends. Not only this but the line that connects connotes the tension of their relationship and how it will end due to the fact that one is shorter than the other. Not only this but it does make a postmodern reference to other television shows specifically Pretty Little Liars.  With this we can say that this will be the font that we will use for the title of our film. We also like this title because all the lines coming out of the letters could symbolize the friendship of the two girls, so to make it better we just have to add a few more lines to the other letters just so the lines don’t look out of place.
  • 10.  As you can see from the graph majority of the people would prefer the pace of our opening sequence to be both fast and slow.  This is most likely the case due to the fact that having a mix of both would make it more interesting and entertaining.  It would also show the different times, like before the title our film could be fast paced and then after it can be slow to show how the scene after the title happened before the scenes before the title. Not only this but the fast paced part of the film would represent the disequilibrium stage of our narrative while the slow paced parts would represent the equilibrium stage of our narrative.  With this we can conclude that in order to satisfy the needs of our audience we should make sure that the pace of our opening sequence is both fast and slow.
  • 11.  As you can see from the graph majority of the people think that the best place for the crime in our film to happen is the woods.  This may be because the woods is the most mysterious and is normally where crimes would most likely happen and would be the most believable since its isolated. This is because the darkness and endless trees show that there is now sign of people around and difficulty to escape.  Based on this, we can therefore say that we can keep our original idea of having the crime happen in the woods because its what our audience prefer as well and we have to make sure that the woods we use show the repertoire of elements of an isolated setting some of which are mentioned above.
  • 12.  As you can see, this graph shows that majority of the people who answered out survey believe that the best object to use all through out our opening sequence would be either a shoe or a hair clip.  This means that the object that we should use to associate it with the main character would be either a shoe or a hair clip. We have decided to make the object a shoe. This links to Butler’s Gender Performance Theory since women use it to show femininity which will make our audience associate the victim as being female due to this feminine item.
  • 13.  This graph tells us that the lighting our audience would want to see in our film is low key lighting.  This is most likely because low key lighting is a convention of the thriller genre and because it would make it more dramatic but suspenseful as well.  With this we can conclude that the lighting that would be most useful to us when it comes to our films opening sequence would be low key lighting which is exactly what we were thinking of using in the first place.
  • 14.  As you can see from the pie chart, majority of the people believe that the camera angle our main character should be shot as is the eye-line view angle.  This is most likely the case because it looks the most normal and would be the clearest way to see the character. Doing this would create personal identity with the female protagonist. However, the fact that we will do it with both female characters could confuse the audience as they won’t know if they are identifying with the victim or the killer creating suspense and intellectual pleasure.  Since low angle was chosen as their second choice, we could use both eye-line view and low angle to shot our main character. The low angle could be used to show the subversion of the stereotype of women since it will show her dominance
  • 15.  As you can see, majority of the people think that the best camera shot for use to use would be medium close ups.  This is most likely the case because they will be able to clearly see the face of the character since its from the shoulders above but at the same time since its not too close they will also be able to see the setting of the film. The medium close ups connote the pressure the characters are under creating more tension for the audience but also representing the tension of the friendship of the two friends.  Based on this we can conclude that the camera shot we should use the most would be medium close ups followed by long shots
  • 16.  As you can see, majority of the people think that the camera movement we should use most in our opening sequence is Pan.  This is most likely because pan and tracking are conventions of a thriller film due to the fact that it connotes the idea of being followed and watched.  With this we can conclude that at certain parts of the opening sequence should have the camera movement of a pan with tracking as well since it is the second movement chosen.
  • 17.  We will keep our opening sequence  Our title will be “Eighteen”  We will use this font  The crime will happen in the woods  The object that will be associated with the main character will be a shoe  Our film will consist of low key lighting  The camera angle that we will use for the main character will be eye-line view  Majority of our film will consist of Medium Close Ups and Long Shots  The camera movement that will be seen most will be tracking and panning
