Apply the concept of narrative
to one of your products
By Hannah Hughes
Identify which product you are focusing on.
Briefly describe it:
I created a teaser trailer as part of my marketing trailer as part of my marketing
campaign for a film titled 'DIVIDE'. This film is a teen crime drama based on a
college student who works well in lessons and seems to be a loner, but once he is
outside of college, he is rebellious and turns to crime. Then relives the same day
again.
Bring in the concept, briefly define:
Narrative is the art of telling a story, it is more than just telling the story, it is how the
story is told.
Apply theory to teaser trailer:
Bordwell and Thompson theories' that narrative is structured with a plot and story. The
set of all the events in a narrative, both the ones explicitly presented and those the
viewer infers and composes the story. This can be applied to our teaser trailer as we
have a plot to what happens, showing a clear timeline in the events that occur, as well
as the story which sums up what the audience believe the film is about.
A second theorist is Roland Barthes whose ideas are useful in considering to what
extent in films or teaser trailers use major and minor enigma codes to generate and
maintain audience interest. We applied this into our teaser trailer, as there are aspects
which would entice and appeal to an audience's interests to continue watching the
teaser trailer.
Apply the concept, give examples to show
how the concept is evident in it.
Our teaser trailer has a linear narrative, showing events that happen in chronological order, along with having questions and
events that cause a question to the audience, this giving us the opportunity to use an open narrative to structure our teaser trailer.
The purpose to a teaser trailer is to entice the audience to go and see the film, this being shown through Barthes theory of enigma
codes. His theory means that certain images or sequences can control how much the audience will know to the story to engage
and hold an audiences interests. He categorizes them from major and minor enigma codes. The questions that our group tried to
entice the audience with was why the character is acting like this within the narrative. I believe this is a minor enigma code
because it would leave the audience to question why he is doing rebellious crimes. Comparing his to the major question which is
who is the character and what is his purpose? I believe that this would leave the audience to question who this character really is,
as there is no indication to who he is. Knowing what his purpose is as well would be a continuous question throughout the teaser
trailer, as it questions for the audience to wonder what lead him to do these things and why. These questions shows how relevant
and important it is when it comes to involving an audience into making them want to watch your film, as the questions throughout
the narrative story would entice them and make your film become appealing to viewers.
Apply the second concept, give examples to
show how the concept is evident in it.
For Bordwell and Thompson's theory of plot and story, the plot information that we have
given has deliberate obscured elements to it so that the story would keep the audience
intrigued in the mysteries and questions that haven't been answered. An example of this
would be seeing the way the main characters life is being shown through a short amount of
time. The easer trailer spans over a day of this one character. Having to see him work
really hard within a college setting, and then acting completely the opposite outside of
college, it would make the audience question what is real and what isn't. However for the
story of the film, it is still briefly mentioned within the teaser trailer because we wanted the
audience to want to know more. To show this, we decided to have the editing like as a
montage to ensure that specific information was left out for the audience to want to know
more about the film. I believe that the story here would be interesting for the audience, as
elements of the story are often open to interpretation, allowing the audience to consider
what is wrong with the main character and why he is acting in such a way. This would link
to genre, as the story we have conveyed here has a understanding with a teen crime
drama, showing that the story would be intense, gripping and viewable for teenagers who
want to see the film in such a way.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, the narrative in our teaser trailer is successful because we have been
able to serve its purpose through the enigma codes, having different questions and
interests that the audience would consider over. We have also included elements to
the story which would interest the audience, and by having a montage edited teaser
trailer, it has enabled it to match with its intense teen crime drama genre.
