The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

BLUE BUSTAMANTE
Directed by Siege Ledesma
George Bustamante played by Joem Bascon is a loving young father and husband. He wants a better life for his family, so he decides to relocate them from the Philippines to Japan. Unfortunately, he loses his job shortly after their arrival. Instead of packing up the family and heading home, George searches for a new job and keeps his firing a secret. After a series of comic events, he somehow finds work as a stuntman in a program similar to Power Rangers. He now earns a living as “Blue Force,” a superhero that punishes evildoers and monsters. It can be relate to Attribution Theory, high achievers will approach rather than avoid tasks related to succeeding, because they believe success is due to high ability and effort which they are confident of.
George felt ashamed of his job because he’s an engineer who goes to Japan so that he can support his family but unfortunately he loses his job there. He cannot bring himself to go back home or tell his family the sad new so he to become a stuntman, so he decided to keep his job as a secret. We can relate this scene to Expectancy Violation Theory this theory sees communication as the relational content and can be used to violate the expectations of another who will perceive the exchange either positively or negatively, depending upon the liking between the two people.
When George goes to Japan, he met his besfriend Roger played by Jun Sabayton. Of course they are both and only the Filipino in their job so they both got companion with each other, they understand each other as co-workers and as an OFW. It can be relate to Uncertainty Reduction Theory the one of the only communication theories that specifically looks into the initial interaction between people prior to the actual communication process. The theory asserts the notion that, when interacting, people need information about the other party in order to reduce their uncertainty. In gaining this information people are able to predict the others behavior and resulting actions, all of which according to the theory is crucial in the development of any relationship.
2. SHIFT
Directed by Siege Ledesma
Estela played by Yeng Constantino expects that his gay-friend named Trevor played by Felix Roco likes her too because of the way how Trevor treated her. She’s still hoping that Trevor will become a straight guy. Because of their closeness she slowly fell in love with Trevor as she expects that Trevor will love her back too, the way she does. And later on she found out that Trevor has a boyfriend. This scene can relate to Expectancy Violation Theory.
Estela Started to fall in love with Trevor because they notice that they are compatible with each other and they both have similarity, this all happened because they are always together after work and they used to share their thoughts to each other. It can relate to Social Penetration Theory.
Uncertainty Reduction Theory applied when Estela and Trevor paired up due to their closeness and how their co-agents teased them. Unfortunately they can’t handle each other because of Trevor’s gender issue and how boyish Estela was. But uncertainty reduced when because of their interaction.
WOMAN OF THE RUINS Directed by: Keith Sicat Sabel played by Chanel Latorre was expecting that Pasyon played by Art Acuña will love her back because of the 7 years lost of Pasyon’s wife. Before she attempts commit suicide. This scene can relate to Expectancy Violation Theory.
When Maria played by Alessandra de Rossie was found in the sea shore, she was told that she was Pasyon’s wife because she doesn’t remember anything. This scene can relate to Reinforcement Theory.
Because of the trauma when Sabel and Maria raped by unknown people in the island, and they still don’t recognize who the suspects behind the rape. This scene can relate to Cognitive Theory.
3. 2. What message does Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon try to present in the movie? How did the movie represent the Filipino people? What theory did you notice that was evidently portrayed in the movie? Elaborate.
GANITO KAMI NOON, PAANO KAYO NGAYON?
Directed by: Eddie Romero
Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon is a film set in the era where the Philippines was colonized by Spaniards. The film was starred by Mr. Christopher de Leon as “Kulas” and Miss Gloria Diaz as Diding and was directed by Mr. Eddie Romero. It is a film about the revolution of Filipinos against the Spaniards during the 20th century and later the American colonizers.
The film showed the Philippine setting when the Spaniards were in the Philippines. The Spaniards have influenced us in many ways and that includes the government, economy, and first and foremost, religion.. They use it to catch the attention of the natives, to make it easier to colonize the islands. They introduced a deity, the almighty father, who created the heaven and earth. They taught catechism to the natives which in turn the latter wholeheartedly accepted it. The film showed how cunning the prayles could be. Kulas while walking down the road, away from his burnt hut, met a priest who in turn was running away from some fugitives. Kind-hearted Kulas search out for a boy named Bindoy and reunites the kid with his grateful father, a friar named Padre Gil Corcuera. The latter endows Kulas with a house and a huge sum of money. He gets transformed from a lowly indio into a rich senyorito. He asks a Visayan lawyer named Tibor if he can rightly be called Filipino. Tibor says that in order to be called a Filipino, one must be a worthy and valuable person. The young man finds a worthy cause to live for. He is disgusted at so-called Filipinos collaborating with the enemies, the Spaniards and the Americans. Just like Jose Rizal, who was heartbroken, he abandons his love for Diding and shifts his love to his country. Kulas, in the end, realizes that a Filipino is someone who loves or will love the then newly created Filipino nation. It is not enough to be born in the country in order to be called a Filipino. One should also love his country through actions. Kulas approaches a group of orphans and reminds them to call themselves Filipinos. I think the theory fits to this movie was Interpersonal Deception Theory, this is a theory describes deception that is used in conversation. There are many variations of deception including falsification, concealment, and equivocation. Just like how other races specifically Spanish and Americans did to Filipinos before. The movie obviously wants to send the message to viewers that we are Filipinos and we can’t be a dummy to the other country.
