The document summarizes and analyzes scenes from three Filipino movies - Blue Bustamante, Kabisera, and Shift - using communication and psychology theories. For Blue Bustamante, the theories of reinforcement, attribution, and uncertainty reduction are applied. Scenes from Kabisera are explained through reinforcement and interpersonal deception theories. Finally, scenes from Shift relate to social penetration, cognitive dissonance, and interpersonal deception theories. The document also discusses the messages and portrayal of Filipino culture in the movie Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon.
Levelwise PageRank with Loop-Based Dead End Handling Strategy : SHORT REPORT ...Subhajit Sahu
Abstract — Levelwise PageRank is an alternative method of PageRank computation which decomposes the input graph into a directed acyclic block-graph of strongly connected components, and processes them in topological order, one level at a time. This enables calculation for ranks in a distributed fashion without per-iteration communication, unlike the standard method where all vertices are processed in each iteration. It however comes with a precondition of the absence of dead ends in the input graph. Here, the native non-distributed performance of Levelwise PageRank was compared against Monolithic PageRank on a CPU as well as a GPU. To ensure a fair comparison, Monolithic PageRank was also performed on a graph where vertices were split by components. Results indicate that Levelwise PageRank is about as fast as Monolithic PageRank on the CPU, but quite a bit slower on the GPU. Slowdown on the GPU is likely caused by a large submission of small workloads, and expected to be non-issue when the computation is performed on massive graphs.

1. Jethro Dave P. Robles BACR2-2 Final Paper
1) Identify at least 3 scenes/per movie in at least 3 out of 5 movies (except ganito kami noon, paano kayo ngayon) presented in the festival and look for a theory that is applicable in explaining the scene. Elaborate your answer.
BLUE BUSTAMANTE
- George Bustamante leaves his family in the Philippines and immigrates to Japan to work as engineer. But because of hardship in finding a suitable job for his career, he was forced to do other job despite of his lack of knowledge about it. That job was working as a stunt double in a famous TV series, Force Five. He was aided by his friend, Jun. I can relate this in the Reinforcement Theory, because George changed his mind because of some certain problems in the series. Jun got his attention, and said his opinion about the advantages of the job, its perks, so George suddenly forced to do other job despite of his love in his engineering career.
- When George leave the Philippines, his son, Kiko, suddenly changed his behavior towards him. Kiko became cold, not answering his messages, don’t want to say something even a single word in the letter of his wife. George’s wife, Junifer or June explained that Kiko just really missed him, that their son just got sulk because he leaves them. I can relate this to Attribution Theory, because this theory attempts to causes of behavior. June tried to explain the reasons behind Kiko’s sudden coldness towards his husband, George. And she also includes that Kiko had new TV series that he got addicted of which is the Force Five. Knowing unconsciously, that his husband was actually one of the lead role in the series. George got cheer up because of that. He’s son idolize him.
- George and Saito, the stunt man of Red Force, were barely known each other. One day, they just find themselves together and a little awkward for both of them since they’re not really talk to each other. So to break the awkwardness between, Saito began to say something about certain matters to him even though George can’t understand what he’s saying. Since George didn’t know niponggo, the Japanese’s
2. language. I can relate this to Uncertainty Reduction Theory, which tries to break the uncertainty between to people who don’t know each other well by asking information. Like in the scene, Saito break the awkwardness between them by asking something to George.
KABISERA
- One of the best films I’ve ever watched. It’s the story of a fisherman named Andres, who found a full box of drugs floating in the sea. This story depicts the story of a fisherman who transformed into a drug pusher, selling his soul for money. First Andres and his wife, Dindin want to execute the remaining drugs after they sell some part of it. Dindin said that it is enough for them to live. They decided to take back the remaining drugs in the sea, and live a normal life. But some circumstances happened, that changed their decision as well. Their son, Aj got accident, and they need a large amount for the operation of Aj’s bones. But all of their savings have already spent for the construction of the new house of their daughter, Ana, since Ana will soon got married. Andres changed his decision, and go back to the sea, find the box of drugs and continue to sell it for money. I can relate this in the Reinforcement Theory, since this theory is about a changing of attitude from an opinion and other circumstances. In the scene, Andres was forced to sell drugs again even though he and his wife agreed to each other that they will not sell drugs ever again.
- When Dindin acting like there is no any relationship between her and Jun’s friend, Jose. Even though Andres already know that there is something between them. I can relate it to Interpersonal Deception Theory, senders attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful.
- Andres wants their children to live with them no matter what. So he decided to build a new house for Anna. But Anna and her fiancée, Ramon doesn’t want to live in the province. Also, Aj wants to study in Manila. Dindin explained that it’s just their children want to leave their comfort zone and become independent. I can relate it to the theory that attempts explain causes of behavior, the Attribution Theory.
SHIFT
- Shift is the story about the two call center agent namely, Estella, a boyish girl and Trevor, a gay man. As the times goes by, their relationship became intimate and both of them didn’t realize that they are falling in love for each other. I can relate this to
3. Social Penetration Theory, as the relationship develops the communication became shallow like what happened to Estella as when she realized that she deeply or her feelings became intimate she became cold or try to avoid Trevor.
- Estella believes that she is right, avoiding Trevor, even though they are just on the same company, their tables were not so far. She thinks that it will lessen her feelings for Trevor. But we all know deep inside that she really want Trevor so she must confess because maybe Trevor feel that same. And also she knows that her feelings it’s not just for friend anymore. I can relate this to Cognitive Dissonance, where it says that that human beings often have conflicting beliefs with actions they take, or other beliefs they have.
- When Trevor confronted him why Estella continue avoiding him. He said sorry if he did something wrong to her. Trevor said that why he is the only one that she doesn’t speak inside their office. Estella said that she is just busy these days. Even though obvious for Trevor that all of people in their office can talk to Estella, he even see it during lunch break when he invited Estella but she refused and said that she was sick, but Estella was having a chitchat to their other girls officemates. I can relate this to Interpersonal Deception Theory, senders attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful.
2) What message does Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon try to present in the movie? How did the movie represent the Filipino people? What theory did you notice that was evidently portrayed in the movie? Elaborate.
The movie is about a young man named “Kulas”, Nicolas Ocampo that has his own wants for his life that is to to travel and experience new places. But all of his it changed when he encountered a priest, where he was assigned to find its son. The film depicts the story of the Filipinos during the Spanish colonization. I saw their sufferings, their love for each other, like in the prison scene, where kulas also became imprison, the Filipino talks about their escape, all of them must escape and no one must left behind. Its funny when Im watching the movie, I feel that I was also living in that time. Wearing that Filipiñana, I mean that different colors of kamisachino. It’s fun to see how Chinese people used to trade that time. The theater play that time, singing ballad songs and acting the different kind of novels. For me, its message that trying to send to its audience is that, we, Filipino people must realize what had happened before. We must always see what in the past, treasure it, because if not because of them, there is no today. Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon, asking it’s audience what have been become today as the time goes by. How can we push this nation into progress if
4. we don’t look back to our roots. Like the famous saying in our country “Ang di lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakapunta sa paroroonan” explained it. Also said in the movie that during that time, The Filipino’s are only who is intelligent enough to fight for their country. But I’m not agree with that. All of us are Filipino. Who was born in this land, having a pure Filipino blood, and who proud of what are they and patronizing what is ours, this is the true Filipino for me. Some people today are Filipino but they are a shame of what are they, try to living like others like some Kpop Fans. I’m not against them, but sometimes the new generation forgot the things that they must remembered, our history. We, the students, must be responsible today because like what our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal said, “Ang kabataan ang pagasa ng bayan”.
