1.
Indeed, Cinema One Originals shows jubilant movies that are really Filipino manifestation. Among the six movies, here are some examples of theories from different scenes of different movies.
The first movie I chose is ‘Kabisera’. The scene where Andres already conformed to the pattern of being a drug dealer to sustain his family was caused by other behaviours, it shows the Attribution theory. Because he is between life and death, whether or not to give up on drug dealing as a contribution to his family or face death since the PDEA were investigating the masterminds in the propagation of illegal drugs around the town. The behaviours attributed are caused by his friends forcing him to face the reality, Andres’ wife encouraging him to continue and put on bigger interest to the costumers for bigger profit, and Andres’ self-interest just to comply with his promise to keep his family together. The way they imposed such attitude made Andres more interested in doing such illegality.
The Cognitive Dissonance fits the scene where Andres is on the neutral side of Pablo and Jose as who really says the truth and takes side on the growth of drug deal. His belief that Jose, his friend since then, was really his companion but Pablo manipulated his mind that Jose will take them to harm. That’s why to higher degree, he followed what Pablo is trying to imposed and end up shot in tandem to Jose. Just to satisfy himself, Andres have to choose between two sides that are going to help him out.
The scenario where Andres have this doubt to Jose when he said that Aj, Andres’ son, is also partner in crime. That caused Jose to reveal their alliance to the PDEA and Andres witnessed him telling the truth behind the illegal improvisation. The aspect of Ancillary messages was used by Jose to reveal the truth to the PDEA since he used verbal and non- verbal aspect of communication. It shows the Interpersonal Deception Theory.
The next movie is ‘Woman of the Ruins’. The scene where Pasyon abused Maria as if she’s like a naïve animal. Because Andres said so, Maria had nothing to do but to follow him, which shows Authority to the Peripheral route, this follow the Elaboration Likelihood Theory.
Attribution Theory fits the scene before Maria was discovered unconsciously on the seashore, Sabel is already having jealousy to Maria. But as Sabel met Maria (she act in humility) was because of variety of causes. The first one is when she realized that Maria is Pasyon’s legal wife, when she saw how abusive Pasyon is to her wife, and lastly, when Pasyon don’t give back the same degree of love to Sabel.
The scene where Sol had this personal information seeking with Maria about her relationship with Pasyon. As the information increases, the uncertainty decreases, which fits the Axiom 3: Information seeking of Uncertainty Reduction Theory
The last movie I chose is ‘Blue Bustamante’. The first theory is Elaboration likelihood Model wherein George haven’t yet hired as engineer in Japan, his friend Roger, offered to him a stuntman job as temporary alternative while waiting for the release. George used both message elaboration and peripheral route in a way that the fact that he has nothing do but to accept it or else his family would suffer (scarcity). He used the central route in a way that he really think of the consequences and message understanding regarding the job.
Attribution Theory follows the scenario when George confidently pursued being a stuntman in the Cartoon show ‘Force Five’ when he knew that his son is watching it without knowing that he is the Blue force, which is also his son’s favourite character. A variety of reasons were attributed; for his son’s happiness, for his family support, and for his self- pleasure in playing the role of Force five.
The last theory for the last movie is Social Penetration Theory. The first time Ayumi and George met in a coffee shop where George handover his handkerchief. This situation motivates Ayumi to follow him, and also prompt George to know her more. But as the conversations goes by, Ayumi knew that George was already married. She thought that George loves her and will marry her to live a happy family. It’s relatively costly on the part of Ayumi, knowing that his love one is already married, that impelled her to discontinue her admiration.
2.
Ganito kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon?
The movie, Ganito Kami noon, Paano kayo ngayon tries to portray the National identity of the Filipinos, willing to serve and accept responsibility. The setting of the movie was during the Spanish-American period, wars and slavery are up to highest degree. Technically speaking, this spontaneity prompts Filipinos to fight for their rights. But some characters in the movie ‘who are’ Filipinos but bragged as ‘filipino-spanish’ try to emphasize the ‘reversion identity’ for self-pleasure and interest. Nicholas Ocampo was indeed confused on how the Filipinos have done this to their own country.
And up to now, things are getting worse that most of the Filipinos face irrational misconception of identity whether they are Filipino or not. Some can’t fight for it, instead, looking ahead for their success and fame and unveil the true blood that dwells in them even at the very risk of their lives. Father Gil Corcuera, who serves in the Spanish Government, shows the declination of Filipino identity. He helped Nicholas to live well by giving a house to live and a dividend of Tobacco Company for business. He also taught him to learn Spanish and Filipino tradition. But everything was improvisation because father Gil wanted to hide the embarrassment he did since he is a priest. Most characters have said that the qualification of being a Filipino includes your identity as Spanish and state of life (middle and high state). But Nicholas didn’t take it so hard that he knew that everyone is Filipino, no exemption. Diding, Nicholas’ beloved woman, shows a character that every Filipino should set a standard and must not depend on how the Spanish or any colonizers manipulate their minds.
For this, the Interpersonal Deception Theory fits the movie since it wants to portray the false communication among Filipinos, Spanish, and Filipino-Spanish (bragged identity). The identity curtained because the Spanish colonizers underhand the ability of the Filipino to fight for their right. Nicholas Ocampo tried to discover what’s behind this diversion, and as a result, he realized that everyone is Filipino. He became witnessed starting from living in Manila, seeing the deceitful minds of the colonizers to dissolve the identity of a true Filipino. He went back to his own land, carrying the suspicion he had in Manila and tried to inculcate the lesson he learned. Somehow, the movie is an adventure of a man named Nicholas who went to a prohibited City and finding out his thirst for knowledge to satisfy him.
