Shift
There are shifting of ideas, time and gender. Some may fail to understand but in the story of the movie “Shift” it all shows up. A shifting of career to another career but not a hopper, strong personality and doesn’t have any directions in life an attitude that the lead role- Estella played by Yeng Constantino shown us. And her gay friend that’s also her officemate whom she falls for is Trevor played by Felix Rocco. It was not an ordinary story of love but an extra ordinary experience for the both of them. It was truly great though it was not a happy ending it really melt my heart.
The moment Estella found out that she is falling for Trevor, she immediately ignore and avoid the presence of his gay friend not only in the office but also not answering the phone calls and message of it. When Trevor feel that Estella was kind of ignoring and avoiding him he want to talk with her and say sorry if he does wrong but then Estella was saying there’s nothing to worry about because everything is alright. It was one example of an Interpersonal Deception Theory, were in communication senders attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful, which may cause them apprehension concerning their false communication being detected. Even though Estella keeps on saying everything is okay while avoiding Trevor it shows the both verbal and nonverbal aspects of communication that often reveals the truthfulness of a particular message.
Another one is the Attribution theory, which attempts to explain the causes of behavior. When Estella told her sister to put her little rat outside their apartment but then one day she saw the little rat destroy her things so she shout the hell out of her sister then her sister cries. It explains why Estella shouts at her sister, and why her sister cries.
The last one is the cognitive dissonance where human beings often have conflicting beliefs with actions they take, or other beliefs they have. In the scene where Estella and Trevor are in the cab and then the radio announcer say some news about LGBTs the driver automatically reacts and state his opinion against LGBTs specifically to the gays. When Estella and Trevor heard it, they also react against the belief of the driver. Estella’s words are powerful and pro to equality while the driver is against to the LGBTs. We humans tend to have conflicting beliefs which results to tensions. Just like how I see the movie and the theories I relate in the scenes may not agree to what you see and your own belief.
Blue Bustamante
It was indeed hard for the family to accept the fact that one of the family member will go overseas to work for the living, another movie that shows the life of an OFW or Overseas Filipino Worker. The Blue Bustamante, which I think I’ve already seen before but didn’t get the message it portrays because I’m too fond of laughing while seeing it. But now, I’m also into laughing but I’ve already see the message it portrays.
George happens to be a stunt man in a Japanese show “Force Five” when he lost his job, it was just nothing to him but when he found out that his son Kiko idolizes the character he portrays he suddenly have more interested and give importance to his job. In this scene, I see the theory of Heider which is the Attribution theory. It attempts to explain the causes of people's behavior and attributing or explaining reasons as to why people behave the way they do. If George’s son doesn’t idolizes the character he portrays, he will not pursue or give importance to the job and stay the same way he use to play it.
The Social Penetration Theory states that as relationships develop, communication moves from relatively shallow, nonintimate levels to deeper, more personal ones. In the whole movie, there was an exchange of letter between George and his wife June. It was their kind of communication which deeper their relationship. They are husbands and wife which is I think one of the simple example of an social penetration theory.
In the film, George wasn’t alone in Japan. He is with his friend Roger, the reason why he became a stuntman in Japan. George and Roger, even though they are friends they are also against each and everyone’s priorities in life and the reason why they work overseas. George prioritizes his family above anything else and works for their future. While Roger in the other hand, always wants to go to the bar to see girls and drink. He always invites George to come with him to see other girls but George always reject the invitation. Roger was so consistent to persuade George, so there comes a day when George finally took the invitation and go with Roger in the bar. Human beings often have conflicting beliefs with actions they take, or other beliefs they have. It was the Cognitive Dissonance of Leon Festinger. Though George always rejects the invitation of Roger, he didn’t stop until the day George accepts his invitation.
Bukas Nalang Sapagkat Gabi Na
This was the last movie that I choose to write my paper. Though I didn’t understand it that much, it gave me some clues to the puzzled mind of mine. The “Bukas nalang sapagkat gabi na” or “Leave it for tomorrow, for night has fallen”. While I am recalling all the scenes, when all of a sudden I read about the theory of cognitive dissonance were in the human beings often have conflicting beliefs with actions they take, or other beliefs they have. I remember the scene where the father of Pedro was about to die but he tells his son to believe in the Lord just like what he did but it doesn’t show in his actions. Funny to think about that way that most Filipinos learn to know but not to believe. The actions that he did was conflicting to what he said he believe in to.
Another one is the scene in the barrio where there are many soldiers who killed the NPA’s or the new people’s army and asking the community if they knew the NPA’s who are lying on the ground. But the whole community just stares at the soldier without anything to say. It shows the theory of Buller and Burgoon, the interpersonal deception theory. It states that communication senders attempt to manipulate messages so as to be untruthful, which may cause them apprehension concerning their false communication being detected. Simultaneously, communication receivers try to unveil or detect the validity of that information, causing suspicion about whether or not the sender is being deceitful. It was an inadvertent behavior which is mostly nonverbal and help to point out the deceit of the sender through a term called leakage. If they say something to the soldiers, their life is in danger so no one dared to say anything and because of that the soldiers are more eager to know but nothing to do.
And last is the attribution theory. It is applicable to use in the scene where the audience will ask, “bakit ginagawa ni Pedro ang mga bagay na iyon?” or “Anong ginagawa niya?” It simply tells us the cause or the reason why he did do, it is because it is also what his father is doing and that is how he observes it. No doubt that he will also do the same thing that his father is doing because he sees what and how to do it. The theory attempts to explains us the reason as to why Pedro behave the way he do.
Ganito Kami Noon, Paano Kayo Ngayon
The setting of the movie was during the Filipino revolution against the Spaniards and then later on, to the American colonizers. It shows how the Filipinos or our ancestors were treated during that period. It was a straight forward message for us to see the difference if there was, between the two different generations. During the colonization period, Filipinos suffer from slavery in our own country where we cannot call ourselves as the true Filipinos because the colonizers always give the thought to all the Indio’s or the Filipinos that they are the true Filipinos. Those who are in the upper class, the elite were the true Filipinos while the lower class is not. In our generation, we are declared to be free. Before we were just a slave to our own country because of the colonizers, but now can we say that we aren’t the slave in our very own country?
The main character, Nicholas “Kulas” Ocampo was an example of an uneducated Filipino not just before but up until now. We laugh at his deficiency and his lack of ability to do things that educated people can do, but Kulas shows the situation many Filipinos not just before but up until now are experiencing. The movie shows us a clear view of the things we aren’t seeing with our own eyes because we kept on blinding our eyes not to see the reality. The situation of many Filipinos before and the sufferings they have to suffer just to survive for a day, reflect on how we are acting now. On how we see things and how we portray it.
In the movie, I observe the theory of Cognitive Dissonance. According to the definition, human beings often have conflicting beliefs with actions they take, or other beliefs they have. Also, cognitive dissonance is when you have two good choices and you make your decision then you find yourself unsure or in doubt about the choice you made. It reminds me of how the Filipinos make an agreement with another colonizer which is the Americans just to help us set free from the colonization of the Spaniards without knowing that it was another colonizer who wants us. The belief that the Americans will help us without any benefit leads to another war. It was another wrong move for us the Filipinos.
