REPORT ON ANALYZING SOCIAL ENTITLEMENTS THROUGH LOCAL GOVERNANCE AT PANCHAYAT...DEEPAK J
The main agenda of the village visit programme was to help students garner information on governance and development in villages- both from the perspective of the administrative side as well as that of the inhabitants. On interacting with the Government officials of the villages, we obtained first-hand information on schemes like the Mukhya Mantri Grameen Awas Mission, the Indira Gandhi Awas Yojana, the Nandan Phalodyan (under NREGA), the mid day meal scheme and Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. They also gleaned insights on the challenges faced by the administration in executing these schemes.
‘Green by Goonj’- a brand built around reusing and up-cycling even the last shreds of material that Goonj receives. A range of over 100 different products like purses, fancy bags, file folder, mats etc. made out of torn jeans, obsolete audio tapes, one side used paper etc. shows the ingenuity, craftsmanship and design aesthetics of women from nearby slums involved in making these products. Buying ‘Green by Goonj’ products ensures that our work in rural India continues unhindered, irrespective of large/small funding support.
NJPC (Not Just a Piece of Cloth) is focused on opening up the most taboo & ignored subject of menstrual hygiene; a female health hazard by involving the masses in generating an affordable cloth napkin. The NJPC programme is a nationwide intervention, which starts with providing a physical product but stresses more on changing practices, behavior change, education & replication in the long term.
MY Pad, Goonj's clean cloth pad is developed out of old cloth collected from urban masses. It is made with highly indigenous processes while also educating the user women to make it on their own.
Goonj works in the most interior parts of India on multiple issues like clothing, relief during disaster with a long-term strategy, material for children in rural schools and menstrual hygiene.

Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.

Preliminary findings from OECD field visits for the project: Enhancing EU Mining Regional Ecosystems to Support the Green Transition and Secure Mineral Raw Materials Supply.
Combined Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) Vessel List.Christina Parmionova
The best available, up-to-date information on all fishing and related vessels that appear on the illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing vessel lists published by Regional Fisheries Management Organisations (RFMOs) and related organisations. The aim of the site is to improve the effectiveness of the original IUU lists as a tool for a wide variety of stakeholders to better understand and combat illegal fishing and broader fisheries crime.
To date, the following regional organisations maintain or share lists of vessels that have been found to carry out or support IUU fishing within their own or adjacent convention areas and/or species of competence:
Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR)
Commission for the Conservation of Southern Bluefin Tuna (CCSBT)
General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM)
Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC)
International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT)
Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC)
Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC)
North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC)
South East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (SEAFO)
South Pacific Regional Fisheries Management Organisation (SPRFMO)
Southern Indian Ocean Fisheries Agreement (SIOFA)
Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC)
The Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List merges all these sources into one list that provides a single reference point to identify whether a vessel is currently IUU listed. Vessels that have been IUU listed in the past and subsequently delisted (for example because of a change in ownership, or because the vessel is no longer in service) are also retained on the site, so that the site contains a full historic record of IUU listed fishing vessels.
Unlike the IUU lists published on individual RFMO websites, which may update vessel details infrequently or not at all, the Combined IUU Fishing Vessel List is kept up to date with the best available information regarding changes to vessel identity, flag state, ownership, location, and operations.

*Faces are blurred due to
confidentiality purpose.
15. Breaking the Myth; People in Chennai won’t accept old
clothes; salwar suits in particular.
Reality; Need of clothes emerged as key need since most
clothes were either lost/damaged or soaked in sewer
water for many days
17. Reality check after 2 Months
City is back on its feet but remote areas still have a long way to go ..
Some areas, streets, colonies, still under 3-4 ft water..
18. Nellore (AP),
neighboring
district of Chennai
equally, affected
but hardly in
news..
Chennai Nellore
Highway closed
for a week due to
damaged roads.
Hundreds of
school children
lost their study
material..
19. Goonj relief and rehab operations running simultaneously
in Chennai & Nellore..
21. Dignified Giving (in the second phase)
People undertook various community level works under
Goonj’s ‘Cloth for Work’ (CFW) and received family Kits.
Locals whole heartedly
embracing the idea of
Cloth for Work in Tamil
Nadu & AP
despite having access to
free material.
22. Our aim has been to work beyond the city as well..
Flood- affected communities in over 20 villages in Pooneri block
(Tiruvallur dist.) participated in Goonj’s CFW initiative. They cleaned
their villages besides plantation and repair works.
23. Cleaning a 150 meters (approx) long choked irrigation canal
Mosquitoes & muddy streets posing a threat to public health.
Goonj’s long term focus on Cleaning of villages and reviving their local
infrastructure
25. More than 10,000 kits have been
distributed in Tamil Nadu
(chennai), and Andhra Pradesh
(Nellore)
A total of 21 CFW activities,
including a large number of locals
Vyasarpadi,
biggest slum of Chennai,
1833 families participated
in CFW
27. Govt. Higher Sec. School in Perungudi
80 pairs of benches soaked in flood water, made usable by painting them.
Supported another school (with 120 differently able children) with all kinds
of basic school material.
28. Reach and Spread of Work
Reached 15,000+ families in 5 districts.
(Chennai, Kancheepuram, Cuddalore, Thiruvallur (TN) & Nellore (AP)
People accepted clothes under Cloth for Work,
Not as charity/relief but with a lot of dignity
as a reward for work done in their own areas
29. Our On Ground Partners
- CCFID
- Positive Women Network +
- Aathitamilan
- Malarchi
- Transgender’s Rights Association
- Doctors for You (DFY)
- Ekam Foundation
30. Key highlights & learning's
• A full time Goonj team of 25 people managing relief operations in Tamil
Nadu & AP, with a base up in Thuraipakkam.
• Clothing emerged as an important but ignored need in Chennai & other
parts. Not a part of relief material provided by most agencies.
• In initial phase Goonj focused on filling gaps and supporting groups,
actively working in Chennai when provisions were not accessible.
• Essential supplies also sent to employees of some corporates in dire need
of basic amenities.
• Goonj reached many badly affected remote & tribal areas that didn’t get
enough attention.
31. Road Ahead…
Focus on livelihood - our top priority
• Goonj’s ‘Vaapsi’ initiative will identify local occupations
and support people with tools lost during floods.
• Reaching out comprehensive School kits to children in
government and small rural and slum private schools
32. Some stark realities…
Challenges of daily life are becoming more evident as
we go deeper in flood- affected areas. Now these areas
certainly need greater attention and material support.
