Goonj's RAHAT efforts in Cyclone & Quake affected Bihar
1. Comprehensive Report on Goonj’s ongoing relief & rehabilitation work in
Quake & Cyclone hit parts of Bihar
Rahat Quake & Cyclone (April’ 2015 - Oct.’2016)
2. Bihar was hit by dual disaster: A strong cyclone on April 21st and then
earthquake on April 25th 2015

5. Goonj created base camp in Purnea , got into wide spread
field analysis and intensified relief operations
7. Some of the team members, who handled massive Kosi floods relief and rehab
efforts moved to this area from other parts of Bihar
8. Over 400,000 Kgs of essential materials including food to family
Kits reached out in the affected areas..
9. Major focus was reviving infrastructure & reaching ‘Relief with Dignity’..
287 development activities taken up so far.. with grit and resilience, disaster hit
communities got together to revive infrastructure under Goonj’s “Cloth for Work”.

& restoring local infrastructure
28. ‘Vaapsi’ : Restoring livelihood
70 Kirana and tea Shops owners have been supported with essential
material like ration, utensils, solar lanterns etc. to revive their profession..

More than 4500 Sujni’s have been made converting 16000 kg’s of waste material into
useful asset..
31. Reaching basic school material to fill up the key gaps while also bringing
positive behavioral change among kids..

33. Improving Health Practices especially around menses has been a key priority
Working with women closely to open up the issue. Over 80,000 My-Pads have been
channelized and 199 sessions conducted to initiate a dialogue around menstrual hygiene
under Goonj’s ‘Not Just a Piece of Cloth’ initiative..

35. Fire – an unnoticed but regular disaster
While people in Bihar were settling down from the impact of dual disasters-
Earthquake & Cyclone, many fire incidents caused massive destruction to
lives and meager belongings they somehow rebuilt to some extent
37. People of the area suffered again with the foods in 2016..
Goonj got into action immediately and provided comprehensive ‘Rahat kits’ to over
2500 families
38. Goonj’s Rahat-Kit comprises of General clothing, Woolens, Sujni/Blanket, Dari, Shoes, Socks,
Utensils, Toys, Undergarment, Tarpaulins, toiletries etc.
39. Channelized 400,000 kgs of material in the affected areas.
9400 disaster- hit families got comprehensive family kits as reward after
taking up focused development activities under Cloth for work in their areas.
287 development activities initiated by people.
199 Awareness meeting held on menstrual hygiene issue and over 80,000
My-Pads ( Cloth sanitary pads) are provided.
In Purnea & West Champaran, 8100 Rahat-kits were provided in various
disasters like floods, fire also.
4500 Sujni made so far. Approx. 16000 kgs of waste material converted into
useful asset.
Identifying and supporting local livelihood is another prime focus. So far,
74 Vaapsi kits have reached out to individuals to support in employment.
More than 84,200 new shoes reached out under S2S and CFW/Rahat
covering 103 schools and 229 Aanganwadis
Some facts and figures..
40. Infrastructure and water/agriculture- In 100 villages, Goonj will take
community led development activities more comprehensively to fill up the
critical gaps.
Livelihood- Identifying local profession and support people to establish their
own works under our time tested employment initiative- Vaapsi .
Home based employment- to women in making Sujni out of non usable
cloth
Education- Focused intervention in over 100 Aaganwadi and schools which
means a constant supply of essential school material like uniforms,
stationary, school kits, toys, shoes etc.
Health- Work on menstrual hygiene and sanitation/ cleanliness issues under
our initiatives Cloth for Work and Not just a piece of Cloth.
Village resource development- Tent house to be developed in the villages
for the local events apart from creating some libraries and bank of
accessories like crutches and wheel chairs for differently-able individuals.
