Film Poster Analysis
This film poster creates the
idea that the film is
enjoyable and intriguing.
The golden bars around
Leo’s face create the
impression that he is
untouchable, representing
him as high up on the
social status hierarchy.
Leo’s facial expression
creates the idea that he
knows the person staring
at the poster & the glass
of alcohol in his hand
makes the audience feel
inclusive, almost making
it seem as though by
watching the film you are
receiving an invite to this
prestigious party.
Go with the flow. The text has
been kept to a minimal,
making only the date, title and
main actor’s name the
clearest and most vigilant to
the audience. This appears to
be following the house style,
as it is plain as opposed to
being busy. The idea of less is
more seems to be present
here.
Attention focus.
The audience
attention has been
placed on Leo’s face
on purpose. The
background has
been blurred out
almost forcing the
audience to look at
his wonderful face.
Background. In his New Moon
poster the characters have been
made to stand out by the dark
colouring of the forest behind
them. The two male characters
seem to be equally dominant,
with neither of them looking at
the camera directly. The
audience are represented as
intruders and the female is
being protected from us or a
potential enemy.. She is
standing furthest away from the
camera and appears to be
grasping on to Jacob’s arm –
giving the impression she is
frightened by something.
The dusty smoke that takes
over most of the bottom half
of the poster creates an
artificial element to the
poster, making it clear that
there may be evidence of
special effects throughout
the film despite the
characters coming across
very real.
Text. This cover, alike to the
poster I analysed previously,
is also following the concept
of less is more. The only
things that are present are
the date release of the movie
as well as the title. Again, this
makes the audience look at
the people on the cover, as
opposed to focusing their
attention else where. I will be
taking this into consideration
when making my own film
poster as I have realised that
the less words there are the
better the poster will be in
advertising the film.
Amount. There is three characters
from the movie on this poster. This
creates the impression to the
audience that all three are equally as
important as each other, making the
audience want to find out more –
especially people who haven’t
watched the films related.
Colour Themes
The colour red instantly
signifies danger – the same
portrayal of this colour on the
older lady suggests that she
has a negative side and is to
some extent dangerous. The
fact that the main image used
on the left hand side of the
page is the heel of a shoe
suggest that the film has
something to do with
materialistic items or the
fashion industry – making it
clear that that the target
audience is majorly female.
Vandalism: The devils horn
and tail that is on the older
lady seems to be creating
the idea that it has been
drawn on her with red pen.
This immediately suggests
to the audience that this
character in particular is
not liked by the other
characters in the film,
implying that she doesn’t
have a nice personality or
character.
PRADA – Just by reading the title
of the film it becomes clear that
the concept of fashion and
appearance are central to this
movie. Supporting the idea that
this movie is aimed at female
audiences in particular. To add
to this the facial expressions of
the characters seem to represent
thir personaliies. One character
is smiling whereas the other
character is showing a moody
expression – making it clear who
the audience is likely to favour –
the suspect and the victim are
being portrayed clearly
Responsible? The character on the
right hand side of the poster
seems to be holding a red pen or
lipstick in her hand – making it
clear that she drew the devil like
features on the older lady,
creating a sense of conflict
between these two characters..
Getting the audience wondering
how or why they do not like each
other… perhaps they are just too
different?
