Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: The objective of this lesson is for the
students to review what they have already learned with figurative language, as well
as noticing Figurative Language in other mediums besides written materials.
Content Standards: English Language Arts- Working on Teams with the Waterfall
Activity and Making Connections between the sentences they work on in class and
Figurative language in the media and in daily life
Materials/Resources/Technology: I will be using PowerPoint and have an additional
handout for the students.
Teacher’s Goals: I want the students to be able to recognize figurative language outiside
of their worksheets and sentences. I also want them to be able to be comfortable knowing
the terms and be able to identify them quickly.
Time

Start of Class: The power point will already be up on the Smart Board.
Students will be working on their Bell Ringer activity placed on the board
to work on while they come into the classroom.

Introduction of Lesson: We will then go over the correct answer for the
bell ringer and why. I will then explain that figurative language is used all
the time and that it is not just something you learn. You can use figurative
language to enhance your writing or to communicate more effectively. I
will show them how figurative language is used for songs, humor, and in
writing with the use of the PowerPoint.

Lesson Instruction: I will review all of the figurative language terms they have
already learned. By using a PowerPoint presentation I have created, we
will go through them together, asking the students which term represents the
clip, quote, or sentence is presented on the screen. I will incorporate using
the board to have the students move and come up and write on the board.

Assessments/Checks for Understanding: We will be doing an activity
called waterfall. I will first break up the class into two groups by having
them number off. They will then sit horizontally in desks with group 1 in
the front and group 2 in the back row. I will then explain the activity. On
the handout there are 13 sentences. The first student in each group will
begin working on the worksheet alone. When I say “Waterfall” the
student must pass it to the student to their right, where they start working
on the question where the last student left off until “Waterfall” is said
again.

Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: When the first team is done, we will go over
the answers together as a class. One student from each team will be
responsible for “grading” their team’s worksheet. As an end to the class,
I will thank the class for participating and giving me their time. I will
wish them a Happy Halloween and say I will see them the next Wednesday.
They will then go work on their Read 180 program or read their books.

Figurative language lesson plan

Lesson Plan Template Name: Marisa Menendez Class/Subject: Read 180-7th Grade Date: Wednesday, October 28, 2009 Student Objectives/Student Outcomes: The objective of this lesson is for the students to review what they have already learned with figurative language, as well as noticing Figurative Language in other mediums besides written materials. Content Standards: English Language Arts- Working on Teams with the Waterfall Activity and Making Connections between the sentences they work on in class and Figurative language in the media and in daily life Materials/Resources/Technology: I will be using PowerPoint and have an additional handout for the students. Teacher’s Goals: I want the students to be able to recognize figurative language outiside of their worksheets and sentences. I also want them to be able to be comfortable knowing the terms and be able to identify them quickly. Time
  • 2. 7:45 am- 7:50 Start of Class: The power point will already be up on the Smart Board. Students will be working on their Bell Ringer activity placed on the board to work on while they come into the classroom. 7:50- 7:55 Introduction of Lesson: We will then go over the correct answer for the bell ringer and why. I will then explain that figurative language is used all the time and that it is not just something you learn. You can use figurative language to enhance your writing or to communicate more effectively. I will show them how figurative language is used for songs, humor, and in writing with the use of the PowerPoint. 7:55- 8:20 Lesson Instruction: I will review all of the figurative language terms they have already learned. By using a PowerPoint presentation I have created, we will go through them together, asking the students which term represents the clip, quote, or sentence is presented on the screen. I will incorporate using the board to have the students move and come up and write on the board. 8:20- 8:25 Assessments/Checks for Understanding: We will be doing an activity called waterfall. I will first break up the class into two groups by having them number off. They will then sit horizontally in desks with group 1 in the front and group 2 in the back row. I will then explain the activity. On the handout there are 13 sentences. The first student in each group will begin working on the worksheet alone. When I say “Waterfall” the student must pass it to the student to their right, where they start working on the question where the last student left off until “Waterfall” is said again. 8:25- 8:30 Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: When the first team is done, we will go over the answers together as a class. One student from each team will be responsible for “grading” their team’s worksheet. As an end to the class, I will thank the class for participating and giving me their time. I will wish them a Happy Halloween and say I will see them the next Wednesday. They will then go work on their Read 180 program or read their books. Self-Assessment:
