What is Fiber Reinforced Composite Materials?
Fiber-reinforced composites are composed of axial particulates embedded in a
matrix material. The objective of fiber-reinforced composites it to obtain a material
with high specific strength and high specific modulus. The strength is obtained by having the
applied load transmitted from the matrix to the fibers. Hence, interfacial bonding is
important.

Manufacturing Methods of Fiber
Reinforced Composite Materials
 Fibers and matrices, prepregs, sheet molding
compounds (SMC), and bulk molding
compounds (BMC) Utilizes as raw materials
 The production is done by applying pressure
and (if required) heat to molds in which the
raw materials are placed
 The viscosity of the fiber/resin compound
decreases during further processing in the
closed mold under heat and pressure (approx.
70 bar)
 The thermosetting resin containing the
isotopically dispersed reinforcing fibers flow
into the closed mold, where it cures.
Compression Method (SMC/BMC Compression Modeling)
 The liquid release agent (wax, silicone spray, etc.), a
gel coat is applied.
 High resin containing coat, which usually contains
pigments and fillers, forms the decorative exterior
surface
 The resin is forced through the reinforcing material by
rolling, thus removing air and completely
impregnating the reinforcement
 The procedure is continued by placing the next resin
forcement layer on top and applying the resin similarly
until the desired number of layers is reached
Hand Layup Method
 Chopped glass fibers and resins are supplied to an
open mold.
 This involves feeding the rovings into a chopper and
then blowing them into a precured resin
 The advantage is the high speed with which the
material can be applied.
 After application, the material is usually consolidated
with a hand roller in the same way as with hand lay-
up.
Spray Up Method
 It is also termed as resin film infusion process
 The vacuum bag is positioned and sealed at mold
perimeter and a perforated tube is place between
the vacuum bag and resin container.
 it uses a vacuum pressure to resin to suck in and
consolidate the laminates as a perforated film is
placed over dry reinforcement.
Vacuum Infusion Method
 Pultrusion is scalable manufacturing process which
produce continuous cross section of FRP elements.
 Have high structural properties and adaptable for
simple and compound cross sectional shapes.
 Using tractor mechanism fiber infused in resin bath
and pulled by steel die.
 The steel die heated rapidly so that the saturated

Market Value And Demands
World biggest leader of Carbon fiber
consumption is China and continuing
leadership with $15 billion. The United
States, being the second largest composite
market, is expected to reach a market value
of $12 billion by 2020
Conclusion
Composites materials gained enormous popularity in the research and
manufacturing industries due to their desirable properties that cannot be
achieved by any of the constituent materials acting alone. Till now
researchers have taken efforts to fuse different variety of constituent
elements to fabri- cate composites and several tests were carried out to study
their properties and phase change. Although this is inconvenient to produce
fiber reinforced composite materials but researchers are trying to make those
available with competitive price.
