Need for alternative energy
sources:
 We mostly depend on Coal, Oil and natural
gas for our energy needs.
 Fossil fuel are non renewable.
 CO₂ released causes global warming.
 Damages water system.
 Renewable power installed capacity is 28%.
 Non renewable power installed capacity is
72%.
 Contribution from natural gas, oil and hydro
plants has decreased in last four years (2012-
2016).
Nano generators:
 Small electronic chip.
 Uses mechanical movements/thermal
energy to generate electricity.
 Made up of piezoelectric ceramic material
and silicon.
 As the name implies, it is extremely small
in size.
 Generators is about 2 mm in diameter.
Types of Nano generators:
 Piezo electric Nano generator
 Tribo electric Nano generator
 Pyro electric Nano generator
What is FENG?
 FENG is a Nanogenerator, it is a
thin film like a flexible device that
when folded, creates the power
 Project Lead and Associate
Professor of Electrical and
Computer Engineering Nelson
Sepulveda research team at
Michigan state university found
this FENG
 By utilizing repeated non-
strenuous tapping and pressing
movements, the research team
was able to successfully operate
a 20 LED light bank, LCD display
and soft keyboard all without a
battery
FENG-Ferro Electret Nano Generator
Fabrication of FENG:
 PPFE(Polypropylene Ferro electret)
plays an important role in the fabrication
of FENG
 Polypropylene (PP) foams are good
thermal insulators with a
high mechanical strength-to-weight ratio
 PPFE film fabricated with a
nominal thickness of 80 μm
and Piezo electric coefficient
d33∼400 pC/N serve as a
insulator
 Two thin silver films
sputtered on the both sides
of the PPFE act as a
electrodes
 Copper wires are fixed on
the electrodes by using
conductive paint and copper
tape providing electrical
terminals that allows the
external circuitry connection
to the FENG
Functions of FENG:
 PP film containing tiny foreign inorganic
particles
 When it experiences stretching in two
perpendicular directions ,the inorganic
particles serve as a stress concentrator
resulting in lens shaped voids
 During this process ,high pressure NO2
or CO2 diffuse into the film which is full
of voids.
 Subsequently ,the external
gas pressure is suddenly
released, resulting in
dramatically swell of those
voids in PP film.
 polarization will takes place
at there.
 The change of dipole
moments is capable of
driving the electrons from
the electrode with negative
charge to the electrode with
+ve charge ,generating a
difference in potential
between the electrodes
 That is flow of charge from
one electrode to another
 Hence, the internal pressure
with in the voids becomes
equal to the external pressure
Upcoming devices based on
FENG:
 Researchers
used Nano
generators to allow
touchscreens to
generate power using
the force of a standard
swipe, which might
add the human hand
to the list of renewable
resources utilized in
the Fourth Industrial
Revolution.
 The researchers
used the FENG to
successfully operate
an LCD touch
screen, an array of
20 LED lights, and a
flexible keyboard, all
without using a
battery; merely
touching the screen
was enough to give
it power.
 By Using FENG at
the shoes ,it
produces more
power which is not
affected the
environment and it
does not produce
any hindrance to the
human health
Applications:
Conclusion:
 In summary, FENG is a new type of energy
harvesting method that takes advantage of
ferroelectric phenomenon
 Based on PPFE, the fabrication of lightweight,
flexible, foldable, and biocompatible thin film
FENG which is able to be power source for
commercial electronics is possible
 Advantages such as lightweight, flexible,
foldable, biocompatible, scalable, and low cost
and robustness could make FENG a promising
and alternative method in the field of
mechanical energy harvesting for various of
autonomous electronics.
