hardships of a well known, local concert pianist, Wladyslaw Szpilman. Wladyslaw Szpilman is
played by actor Adrien Brody, who does an excellent job portraying both the warmhearted side of
Szpliman and the desperate struggling side we see later on in the film. The film is based on

As mentioned previously, one of the most known objections to the distinction of primary and
secondary qualities was raised by George Berkeley. Differently than Locke, who was a
metaphysical dualist, Berkeley was an immaterialist. His philosophy defended that all objects
are strictly fragments of our minds: All that exists are minds and their ideas . As Locke defines
secondary qualities as ideas in our minds caused by objects in the real world, it follows that
central to Berkeley s objection is the idea that secondary qualities are strictly in our minds, using
it to argue that primary qualities must also be products of our minds rather than of objects in the
world. In his words, That the qualities we perceive are not on the objects: that we must not
believe our senses: that we know nothing of the real nature of things, and can never be assured
even of their existence: that real colours and sounds are nothing but certain unknown figures and
motions:. . . these are the strange notions which . . . embarrass the mind with endless doubts and
difficulties. And it is against these. . . I endeavor to vindicate common sense . Berkeley argued
that secondary qualities are only ideas in our mind, therefore so are primary qualities. For him,
there cannot be ideas that exist independent of a mind, as well as no things existing that are not
