Agricultural sector as a pivotal role in Indian economy
The share of agricultural sector in G.D.P. OF INDIA was
44% during 1973-74.
Agriculture provides the principal means of livelihood
for over 60% of INDIA’s population

4. 1.OVER DEPENDENCE ON MONSOONS
Breakdown of meteorological cycle of rainfall in india
In india ,93% of area under dry land
farming.which means , totally dependent
on rainfall as irrigation systems are scarce ,
not equaly spread and are not efficient
Sometimes more than normal rain causes
floods which also destroys the crop

5. 2. LACK OF PROPER IRRIGATION
Farmers in india are highly dependent on
rainfall. They don’t have any proper source of
irrigation farming . Irrigation farming is when
crops are grown with the help of irrigation
system by supplying water to land through
rivers , reservoirs , lakes and wells
58% of farmers having commited suicides had
absoulutely no irrigation facilities

6. 3.INDEBTEDNESS
Indebtedness was reason behind the suicide of 93% of farmers
Out of 17.64 lakh farmers only[25.3%]
farmers could avail institutional finance

Private money lenders charges high
intrest rates between 48-60% p.a.
Cooperative sectors brought down their interest to 7% , even
then the farmers are taking loans from private individuals

7. 4. EXPENSIVE TECHNOLOGIES
New technologies are better but they
come with high price tags , which are
either too costly to be bought or they get
their money through loans , which again
push them into loans
Thus it is too risky to adopt the high technologies in india

8. Impact of farmersuicides
Suicide leads to the loss of sole bread winner
in the family
It cause the lots of psycological distress to the family
It also impacts on childrens education
Childrens sometimes lose both parents , forcing their
education to a halt , especially if they have to work in
order to provide for their needs
Farms are confisticated due to inability to pay back
high intrest loans . There is also loss of assets i.e. is
domestic animals and agriculture implements
This also leads to the
CHILD LABOUR AND DETORIATION of physical health

9. Preventive measures
• Farmers must necessarily be educated about modern farming techniques and practices
• Younger professionals must be encouraged to participate in farming activities
- Farm loans at soft interest rates need to be made available, and loan recovery procedures
need to respect human rights;
- Fair price for farm products must be ensured, and middlemen eliminated by creating a
direct reach for the farmers to the market
- Storage and food processing units need to be established in rural areas
- Water supply for irrigation must be insulated from the vagaries of nature by better water
management systems;
Training needs to be provided for secondary rural investments in dairy farming, poultry
farming, animal husbandry, and other activities, with a clearly viable chain apparent from
financing to marketing
