Tyler Joseph experimented with clipping masks, shapes, and layer masks to create logos. He wants to use these techniques when designing his fanzine. He also experimented with drawing tools to colorize photos to make them look original. Tyler plans out his 12-page fanzine on the band Twenty One Pilots, with pages covering the band members, their albums, and lyrics. He finds fonts, color schemes, and layout ideas for the different pages. Draft texts are included for the biography pages on Tyler and Josh.

From rigorous academic pursuits to practical engagements, each experience has contributed to my growth and refinement as an architecture student. This portfolio not only showcases my projects but also underscores my attention to detail and to innovative architecture as a profession.
2. Production ideas-
Experiments
These experiments were simply using the clipping mask tool. I
wanted to go over on how to use the clipping mask tool because I
know that this technique will be useful when creating my fanzine
when I am designing my own ideas. I also used the shape tool to
create this logo and merged the layers together to create one whole
logo, which made the process of clipping masking quicker. Using the
layer mask tool again, I created the logo but used different images in
it to make it my own original logo.
Even though this tool is quite basic, I wanted to experiment with
how certain logos or text might look with clipping mask on for when
I start creating my fanzine.
Using clipping mask can be really useful if I want to take existing
photos or logos and edit them to make them my own and look
different to the existing one. Logos or visuals from the album would
be useful to try the clipping mask on.
Original existing Twenty One Pilots logos
3. Production Experiments
Drawing tool:
I wanted to use this drawing technique
where you choose an image and fill in
certain features with color to make it look
like a drawing/painting. I knew that this
sort of technique would be useful so I
could make my photos I gathered from
the internet look original.
I experimented on a photo that wouldn’t
be included in my fanzine so I wouldn't’t
have to do the same image or similar
image over.
When experimenting with this drawing
technique, it was a lot easier than I
thought so that’s good to know for when I
actually start designing my fanzine.
I noticed while experimenting that I kept
missing gaps in between the hair and the
face so I know for next time that I will
outline a bit over the edge when I draw
the hair or the face.
In my actual design for my fanzine I will
try and add a bit more detail and outline.
For example, cheekbones, shading on hair
and clothes, etc.
4. Production Experiments
I wanted to learn how to create the slime
effect for my production work. I
experimented on an outlined skeleton head
as this is a logo relevant to the band,
Twenty One Pilots.
I didn’t put as much precision and detail
into my experiment as I was just using this
time to get a feel for what I will be creating
in my actual fanzine production.
All I did was use the paint tool to fill in the
areas I wanted to use the slime effect on,
then went to ‘liquify’ in the edit section. I
was then able to drag the paint downwards
to create a liquid effect. Now that I have
experimented with this effect I am
confident in making my production work
more precise for this technique.
5. Page Planning
Subject- Twenty One Pilots (band)
12 pages (including front and back)
(inside fanzine)
Page 1 & 2 would be talking about the two people in
the band. Info on their background, how they rose to
popularity, etc.

and the Niners)
7. Fonts
These two fonts are some of the first fonts I found that I feel is similar to the text
from the album ‘blurryface’ which will be talked about in my fanzine. I found the
font from the website ‘1001 Fonts’ and the top font is called ‘Josefin Sans Font’
and the bottom font is called ‘Klein Extralight font’. I could use these fonts for
headlines or quotes. The font is clear and speced out so it could create clear
article text. The Blurryface on the album quoted has a line through it so I could
also add a line through my headings on Photoshop.
I found this font on the website ‘fontsquirrel’. I thought this font is similar to
some of the fonts used for the ‘Trench’ album which I will be talking about in my
fanzine. The font is called ‘ProFontWindows’. This is the kind of font I would use if
I was quoting a song lyrics, the track list or even a header.
These are also other fonts that I found from the website ‘1001 Fonts’. The top
font is called ‘cocogoose letterpress’ and the bottom font is called ‘impact.zip’. I
thought that these fonts would fit nicely with the Trench album because of the
grainy effect where the font could have a mix of black and yellow (Part of the
Trench album color theme). Because of the fonts thickness of the first font I
would likely use this fonts for a header. However I could use the bottom font for
article text as it’s much thinner.
I picked up this font from the ‘1001 fonts’ website. I thought this font would go
really well with the page dedicated to the ‘self titled’ album as the idea of it
looking like dripping liquid goes with the visuals of the album cover and the
colors as well.
‘Nosifer’ font from ‘1001 fonts’
11. Cover layout
I know that I want the photo on the cover of
my fanzine to have a pop art effect. With
this effect you can merge images together to
make them look like one as you can’t see the
background from the original images. I want
to use a picture of both Josh and Tyler from
the band so it is clear on who the fanzine is
particularly based on. For my quick example
on the left I just kept the background black,
however for my actual cover I may use a
yellow color for the shadows.
For the header of the fanzine I will use the
color yellow or black for the font. Both of
these colors are color themes linked to
twenty one pilots and their albums.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Bkj-
nHZlac- this is a link to a Photoshop tutorial
which explains how to do the pop art effect.
12. Page 1 & 2 layout
Page 1 will be about Tyler from the band and page
2 will be about Josh, also from the band and I will
use a close up photo of them to draw around. This
gives the audience some information on the two
individual members so for people who may not
know who twenty one pilots are, can have an
insight to who they are before they look at their
music.
I want to use the drawing effect that I used in my
experiment for the band members as I don’t really
have a color theme for pages 2 & 3 as its not
based on a particular album. These 2 pages are
mainly just factual pages.
I will write a paragraph of article text for each
page about the background of the band members
and the successes of the band ‘Twenty One
Pilots’.
(article
text)
Tyler Joseph (in
font impact.zip)
Top
logo
I will use an interesting background for the page instead
of it being plain white. I think maybe a black patterned
background from their album ‘Trench’ as it’s their most
recent album and relevant.
Background layout idea
13. Layout Pages 3 & 4
The screenshot to the right is an example of how I
will layout my album pages (pages 3-11). I
experimented with the ‘self titled’ album for this
page as it is the first album page that will be shown
in my fanzine. The experiment page has minor detail
in it however I only added in the main pieces of
detail on the page that I know will be going onto my
actual fanzine production. The third page (the left
side of the screenshot) is where I will be adding in
my factual information. I will probably add in more
images for this page as well such as small logos or
visual representations of album lyrics. The right side
of the page is going to be a more simpler design
where I include lyrics and a drawing in the center
(possibly my own drawing). The drawing I have
included on the right side is one I found online
relating to the self titled album however I will
probably use a different image that relates to the
lyrics. I am going to use the lyrics I used in my
experiment for my actual production work as these
lyrics are the most interesting to me. I will also add a
background color or something visually interesting
for the background instead of it just being plain
white like a color from the albums color theme.
I experimented on how to remove the background
on photos and how to use refine edge. Although
this is a technique I knew how to use, the
experiment let me actually see how my initial
ideas look. I do still like the though of there being
a center photo and writing in the background but I
will change the text color and layout for my actual
production work.
I could use the liquify effect in my work to create
the slime look in the skeleton.
14. Pages 7-8 Layout
This is an example on how I will layout the pages about
the album ‘Blurryface’. I gathered the photos from the
internet but when I use similar photos I will edit them to
make them look more unique.
The black and white patterned image to the left of the
screenshot are patterns from the album cover. For my
actual production work I will edit this by filling in my
own colors in the white spaces like red, grey and black
as they are the color themes of the blurryface album.
I like the look of my banner at the top of the left side of
the screenshot that reads ‘Blurryface-The Album’ as the
font is similar to the actual album font and the look just
fits in well with the page.
On the right hand side of the screenshot I used a photo
of Tyler that I am planning on using for my actual
production. I will edit the photo to make Tyler's face
blurry or glitched to fit with the visuals of ‘Blurryface’.
I will stylize the photo with the option of ‘wind’ and
from there I will use the brush tool to blur the face.
Also on the right hand side of the page I used lyrics from
the song ‘Lane boy’ from the blurryface album which I
am also hoping to use in my production work. I will use
a different font for my actual production work and I also
think I will make sure the lyrics fill a line instead of it
being laid out in sections.

Draft 1-factual information:
• American Lead singer
• Born December 1st 1988
• Struggled a lot with mental health growing up-inspiration for his music
• Produced his first solo album in 2007
• Christian
• First started creating music when he found an abandoned keyboard and mimicked songs from the radio
• Married in 2015
• Produced album ‘self titled’ in 2009 with bassist nick Thomas and drummer Chris Salih.
• Met josh dun in 2012 and released their first album together in 2013 ‘vessel’
Draft 2-Overall information
Tyler Joseph was born on December 1st 1988 in Columbus, Ohio. Tyler's musical interest started early on when he discovered an abandoned keyboard
in his basement which was a gift from his mom. Tyler would start to mimic songs he heard from the radio, which then led to him creating his own
sounds and music. Throughout school and his musical career, Tyler struggled with depression and anxiety, and battled self harm. A lot of his music is
based off of his struggles and battles with depression and anxiety and often uses metaphorical language to represent what he goes through. With the
music Tyler writes, he sometimes includes characters or personas to represent his music like ‘blurryface’ in the album called ‘blurryface’ or ‘dema’ in
the album ‘Trench’.
The band ‘Twenty One Pilots’ was brought to life with Tyler and his two friends, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih in 2009 when they also debuted their self
titled album. When Thomas and Salih left the band in 2011, Josh Dun was introduced to Tyler which is when Twenty One Pilots became a duo. Tyler
married Jenna Black in March 2015 after being engaged in 2014. In 2019 the pair announced they are expecting their first baby—due at the beginning
of 2020.

pilots) and Chris introduced Josh to Tyler in 2011, when Josh joined Tyler Joseph in the band ’Twenty One Pilots’. Josh
doesn’t ever sing in the twenty one pilot songs but the drumming is always Josh. In twenty one pilots song ‘The Judge’
there is a small backing lyric where Tyler shouts ’Josh Dun!’ as a small shout out that they could laugh about. Josh and
actress, Debby Ryan got engaged to each other in December 2018.

Draft 2:
Twenty One Pilots released their fourth studio album ‘Blurryface’ on May 17th 2015. That same year, the album
had sold over 1.5 million copies worldwide and it was the eighth best selling album of 2016. It is also the first
album in which every song is either certified gold, platinum or multi-platinum under the RIAA Gold and Platinum
Program. The album is also intriguing to fans as Tyler creates the conceptual character called ‘Blurryface’ that is
supposedly used to personify his insecurities, dark thoughts, depression, etc. It’s interesting as fans get to
interpret the album and Blurryface in their own way making the album more personal to individuals. Like Twenty
One Pilot’s previous album, Vessel, the album has a wide genre range including genres like hip hop, rock, reggae
and indie. Popular songs on the Blurryface album include ‘Stressed out’, ‘Lane boy’, ‘Ride.’

Draft 1: Factual Information
-Released October 5th 2018
-Fifth studio album
-175,000 copies sold in the first week, over 1 million sold worldwide
-Album tells a story- talks about DEMA and a fictional world
-Trench-being stuck in-between two places and need to escape.
-Range of genres but mainly Pop Rock and hip hop
Page 9-Trench
Draft 2:
-Twenty One Pilots released their fifth studio album called ‘Trench’ on October 5th 2018 with their record label ‘Fueled by
Ramen’. Trench is Twenty One Pilots fifth studio album. The album sold 175,000 copies within the first week of it being
released, putting the album at number 2 in the U.S Billboard 200 that week, with one million copies also sold worldwide.
The album has an interesting concept to it that fans were able to explore-the idea that Trench is a sort of fictional world that
tells a story which includes a trilogy. The first part of the trilogy is the song ‘Jumpsuit’ where Tyler interprets trying to escape
DEMA (possibly mental illness?) but fails. In Jumpsuit you see a masked person in a red hooded cloak who fans believe to be
DEMA or Blurryface. The second part of the trilogy is the song and music video of ‘Nico and The Niners’ where Tyler escapes
DEMA with the help of Josh Dun and then there's the third part of the trilogy-’the song ‘Levitate’. There are a lot of theories
surrounding who DEMA is, how DEMA could be related to Blurryface (a conceptual character from their previous album), who
Nico is, etc. Overall it is a very fascinating album which not only makes people feel their emotions but also makes them think
deeper meanings.

Editor's Notes
Think about a subject you could write about, a design style could work in and why you would want to do it.
Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include?
Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
