The document summarizes Alice Leeman's experiments with editing images using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. In Lightroom, Alice learned how to adjust perspective and colors. She found the perspective tool useful for architectural photos. In Photoshop, Alice experimented with perspective warp to make buildings look taller, pop-up effects to make images look more 3D, and spiral effects around objects. The experiments helped Alice gain skills and confidence in using effects for her production work.

To make your job easier and help you create better designs, we have put together a list of common graphic design mistakes that you need to avoid.
2. Before After
Editing Perspectives and Color in Adobe Lightroom
When looking through experiments, I noticed that Adobe Lightroom
was a popular app used to edit images, especially architectural images.
I decided to follow one of these tutorials to help me.
The first tutorial I looked at was by ‘tutvid’ on youtube. He showed us
how to change the perspective of an image in Lightroom, e.g. making a
building look more upright. I had to go to the ‘Transform’ section and
click on the grid logo.
Once I had selected this logo, I could
draw a line where on the edge of which I
wanted to straighten up. As it was my first time experimenting I didn’t
quite get the final result I wanted, but if you compare the perspective
of both the before and after images, you can see the final outcome is
more straightener up more and also thinned out more. I think this tool
is extremely useful for my production work as most of my photo’s will
be architectural photos and I will likely want to make similar
adjustments to them so the buildings don’t look lopsided on camera.
After I experimented with this tool, I moved onto the color tool. With
this section I could select certain colors like the blue and orange, and
adjust them. I also had a choice of tools where I could adjust
saturation, contrast, clarity, etc, Using all these tools means I can make
buildings look much more brighter and vivid.

I noticed that when I was using the transform tool, some of the corners would be cut
out as you are moving the picture frame. This meant I had to crop my photos to fit the
frame. This is something I need to consider when I am taking photos as some of it may
be cropped, so I need to leave some background in the photo that can be cropped out.
3. Perspective Warp in Adobe Photoshop
Perspective Warp is a tool you can use to change the
perspective of your pictures. It is a really quick and
easy tool to use, it can make buildings look taller,
smaller, thinner, thicker, etc.
I made sure I had a duplicate of the original image
before I started editing it so there is a backup of the
image. Then you go to the ‘Edit’ bar and press
‘Perspective Warp’. I then had to draw a box over
the sections of the building I want to transform.
Before After
Once I had laid out the sections of the buildings I want to transform, I then clicked on ‘Warp’ where I could
then drag the corners of the selected sections and change the perspective of the image. As you can see, I
was able to make a building look taller and slightly thinner than the building actually is.
This tool can be useful for images of blocks of buildings or circular buildings where I can adjust the height.
The overall technique isn’t difficult to create and there are only very few steps to take.

4. Pop-up effect in Adobe Photoshop
I think a pop-up effect would be a useful effect for my production work. This would make my images look
more 3D on page and manipulating to the eye. I have never done a pop up effect before and I have
always thought it to be really interesting to view in a magazine/booklet so I thought this could be a
technique to use in my project.
The first thing I had to do was have 2 separate layers of the image I am using (one for the frame and one
for the pop up), and another plain layer. The plain layer was made into the background layer where I
made a gradient radial layer.
After this, I made the frame shape using the rectangular marque tool, and using the warp technique to
shape the frame into a 3D page. I then created a clipping mask so the original image was inside the box
frame that I had just made, as it shows in this screenshot.
From here, I selected around the pop up photo using the magic wand tool, where the object would be
shown popping out of the frame. After this I used the eraser tool to quickly go around the edges of
the building, which I had missed, to make the edges look sharper.
For me, the most difficult part of creating this effect in photoshop was probably designing the
background, instead of creating the actual pop up effect itself. It can get quite confusing when adding
in the different gradients and making the colors blend smoothly. However the overall technique, I
didn’t find too confusing or difficult.
Doing this tutorial has helped me gain experience in how to do different pop up effects. I feel much
more prepared and confident in creating this effect again in photoshop.
I followed a tutorial on YouTube by an account called ‘Michal G.’

5. Creating a spiral effect around an object
Even though this is quite a simple effect, I was still interested to experiment on trying it out as I am
planning to add similar effects in my production work. I like this effect because it gives off a more
realistic, 3D effect. This experiment was a great way for me to understand how to use the
perspective warp tool (as I have never used it before) and how to create a more ‘neon’ spiral.
I made sure I had 2 duplicates of the image before creating a new layer where I could start creating
the spirals using the ‘perspective warp’ tool. This tool meant I could create straight, smooth lines
which I wouldn’t have been able to achieve using the brush tool freehand.
Once I had created the spiral, I right clicked on it and selected ‘Stroke Path’ where the brush stroke
was able to become visible. I then used the eraser tool to delete some of the spiral lines that
overlapped the building to complete the 3D effect.
If I use this effect in my production work, I will more likely create a more neon glow effect, with the
lines being thinner, like a light effect. This experiment gave me an overall review on how I will go
about this process.
