Project proposal title and date:
Northern Decline 2nd march
Main area of activity:
Film
Rationale:
Throughout the past two years I have made a music video, a documentary and a fanzine. I think
the skills I learnt from my music video and documentary will benefit my film the most. I learnt how
to import and utilise preset transitions and apply filters. I also learnt how to colour grade. I will
certainly use these skills in my film and especially the colour grading and filters as I want it to have
quite an abstract look. In terms of filming both my music video and documentary allowed me to
learn new skills. Firstly, with hardware, I wasn’t particularly experienced with cameras before these
projects, but I now know how to format the camera to my surroundings and use creative angles.
With lots of my film being shot at night, formatting the camera will be vital. Although this project is
film, some skills from my fanzine project will help, mainly text design. I learnt how to design my
own fonts and add colours/gradients effectively. I will use this for whatever text elements I need in
my film such as subtitles or location names.
Project Concept:
I want to make a short film based on the struggles of young men living in the north of
England with most of the dialogue as rap music. It will begin with shots of a group of lads
enjoying an average night at the pub, the focus then goes onto one of them as he leaves
the pub. This is the main character. We then see his drunken walk home, and the alcohol
fuelled antics he gets up to along the way. Upon arriving home he passes out and is
awoken the next morning by his angry mother who after an argument kicks him out the
house. The rest of the film follows him as he travels around trying to find somewhere to
live, all while battling his drink and money problems. The film concludes with a sad ending,
as he eventually commits suicide. The sad twist at the end is as soon as he dies his mum
texts saying he can come back and she's sorry. The overall aim of the film is to present
firstly the lives of certain demographics of young men, and the downsides to those lives.
Hopefully attracting attention to these issues and inspiring those in similar situations to
change. The storyline also attempts to show that it's never too late, with him committing
suicide and his mum forgiving him just after, it should show that you should not waste your
life as it can get better. Although it has a message and story to follow, I want to place a
large focus on British culture and working class Britain. Things like clothing, attitudes and
slang words. I will research lots of British films and music videos that incorporate this, to
hopefully pick out some clear pointers that define working class Britain to use in my film.
I'll also research some sad films, I want to ensure I keep the moody theme but make it clear
there's a positive message rooted within.
How will the project be evaluated and reviewed:
I will firstly evaluate throughout the project by amending feedback I get from my tutor. I'm going to
ensure I meet deadlines in order to get this feedback and have time to change work if needed. I
plan to finally evaluate my work by thoroughly checking through my plan and ensuring I completed
everything I intended to. A main area I think I’ll need to evaluate thoroughly is the story element,
with my film using lots of music instead of dialogue I think it could be challenging to convey the
story effectively. I want to present a final piece before I hand it in to some peers, and ask them
what they thought the story was. I’ll again amend anything if needs be. I hope that my evaluation

shows me the distinctive areas I need to improve upon. I’m quite enthusiastic about evaluating my
research, as I’m taking journalism next year at uni and I think evaluating research will show me
areas I need to improve upon that regard that.
