 A Wiki is an ongoing collaborative website
that is composed of many authors. It allows
people to add, modify, or delete content.
 Facebook has become one of the fastest growing Wiki’s of the
21st century allowing people of all ages to connect and
communicate with friends worldwide.
 In February 2004 Mark Zuckerberg, 23, founded Facebook
while studying psychology at Harvard University.
 Facebook is a popular free social networking website that
allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and
video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family,
and colleagues.
 With over 1.3 billion users, one of Facebook's mission, is to
work with schools, colleges, and universities, to foster
learning communities through Facebook and technology.
Within each member's personal profile, there are several key
networking components:
 The Wall - which is essentially a virtual bulletin board.
Messages left on a member's Wall can be text, video, or
photos.
 Virtual Photo Album - Photos can be uploaded from the
desktop or directly from a smart phone camera. There is no
limitation on quantity, but Facebook staff will remove
inappropriate or copyrighted images. An interactive album
feature allows the member's contacts to comment on each
other's photos and identify or tag people in the photos.
 Status Updates - a micro blogging feature that allows
members to broadcast a short announcement to their friends.
All interactions are published in a news feed, which is
distributed in real-time to the member's friends.
 Teachers must be properly trained to use the technology and
properly align instruction.
 Technology must be accessible and manageable by the
students.
 Effective technology requires long term planning and support.
 The technology or wiki should be integrated or align with the
curriculum framework.
 Quickly Accessible
 Groups can be set up with privacy control so they
cannot be visible to non-members
 Quick response to homework questions or any
other inquiry
 Develops interpersonal relationships outside of
the classrooms
 Extends learning outside of school
 The student gets an opportunity to develop a
voice
 You can form a community with parents through
Facebook
 Security is often times abused by someone who
impersonates others
 Cyber bullying is a big concern among the school
system
 Monitoring the proper use of each user under
instructor supervision to ensure safety
 The additional time necessary to properly
manage and plan for the Wiki/Facebook in order
to align it with curriculum standards
 Parents/guardians doubting that Facebook is a
safe and viable option for student learning
 Access to Facebook may be limited by security
features on school computers
 Groups- Strengthen communication between teachers and
students. Can also engage normally shy students and increase
their participation. Also allows large classes the opportunity for
