Social media used in school libraries has become an essential tool that library practitioners increasingly use. These powerful online publications can help connect students, teachers, parents and the community to events that take place within the library. Social media is not only a promotional tool, but a means of engaging stakeholders and forging new partnerships. Join school librarian K.C. Boyd as she shares ways that librarians can use social media for branding, digital outreach, and instruction.

7. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, on
November 19, 1976, Jack Dorsey became
involved in web development as a college
student, founding the Twitter social
networking site in 2006. Since that time,
Dorsey has served as CEO, chairman of the
board, and executive chairman of Twitter.
He also launched the successful online
payment platform Square in 2010.

9. In 2010, Kevin Systrom and Mike
Krieger co-founded the photo-sharing
and, then later, video-sharing social
networking service Instagram in San
Francisco, California. The name
"Instagram" comes from the words
"instant" and "telegram".
In April 2012, Instagram was sold to
Facebook for $1 billion in cash and
stock, along with 13 employees.

11. Founded in 2010 by Paul Sciarra, Evan
Sharp and Ben Silbermann. Pinterest was
first introduced to the world as a catalog of
ideas that inspires users to âgo out and do
things.â
Pinterest allows users to save images
and categorize them on different boards.
They can follow other users' boards if they
have similar tastes. The evolution of
Pinterest is based on the shared interest of
its users and relies on its members to
produce the content.

13. Created in 2011 by Evan Spiegel, and
Bobby Murphy, former students at Stanford
University. Snapchat is an image messaging
and multimedia mobile application.
Previously called, Picaboo, the principal
concept of Snapchat is that pictures and
messages are only available for a short time
before they become inaccessible. The pair
turned down an 3 billion dollar offer from
Facebook.
