Curious about Facebook, but don’t know where to start? Hastings College’s Perkins Library has been using its Facebook page to spread the word about the library’s programs and services. Susan Franklin, Public Services Librarian at Perkins Library, will share how the library developed its Facebook presence and how this social networking tool is being used to inform, invite, announce, network and connect Perkins Library with its community.

  2. 2. What is a “Facebook”?• Company Overview: “Millions of people use Facebook everyday to keep up with friends, upload an unlimited number of photos, share links and videos, and learn more about the people they meet.”• Founded: February 4, 2004• Mission: “To give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.”• Users: 845 million monthly active users at the end of December 2011 (175 million in 2009!) http://newsroom.fb.com/content/default.aspx?NewsAreaId=22
  3. 3. “Facebook Demographics and Statistics Report 2010— 145% Growth in 1 Year”• istrategylabs.com has been tracking Facebook since 2007 (20 million U.S. users)• 20 million     103+ million U.S. based users in 2010• The 35+ demographic now represents over 30% of the entire user base. 18-24 demographic = a little more than 25% of total user base 25-34 demographic = a little less than 25% of total user base Facebook is where your patrons are!http://www.istrategylabs.com/2010/01/facebook-demographics-and-statistics-report-2010-145-growth-in-1-year/
  4. 4. Why use facebook?
  5. 5. (not so brief) History of Facebook Facebook “born.” Harvard only. Profile = directory (name, contact info, picture, 2004 interests). Work-intensive (had to visit friends‟ profiles to see updates). Facebook available to professionals, students from other colleges, even 2005 high school students. News Feed” added, which highlighted friend information (most recent and 2006 most relevant content) on your own homepage. Term “social graph” was coined to describe how Facebook “maps out” 2007 people‟s connections (remember that these connections exist in the real world…all Facebook does is map them out). 2008 Facebook redesign made Wall the central focus, “a big step in the direction of helping people share immediate experiences with one another: a thought, a status, a photo, a note, a feeling.” Companies, government entities, organizations, etc. are encouraged to join Facebook. 2009 The old adage about “shift happens”? Facebook underwent another redesign in March 2009. Layout and emphasis were “streamed.” Public figure/celebrity/organizational profiles began to look, act, and display content more like personal ones.“ 2010 “Lists” allow a Google+-y approach to organizing your connections and information flow. Timeline. According to Zuckerberg, “Timeline will be "all your stories, all 2011 your apps, a new way to express who you are…as time goes by, it will automatically help users by saving the important items and shrinking the lesser ones” (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/f8-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-announces- timeline-feature-open/story?id=14582916)Future? (Timeline adapted from “Share and Connect” by Mark Zuckerberg, March 4, 2009)
  6. 6. Value of Facebook (and other Web-Based Social Networking Tools) Tech Guru David Lee King Predicted in 2009 that:• Translate your institutional “self” into an online [Effective] Social networks will someday be presence/entity. like air [integrated seamlessly into our lives].• Make connections with patrons, users, colleagues, Three things are needed to make social similar institutions, etc. that networks like air: are based on existing (real 1. identity - who you are world) contacts. 2. contacts – who you know• Group connections based on 3. activities – what you do similar interests, activities, Facebook is one way to experiment with goals. integrating social networks into your• Share content and interact library. And it‟s as easy as (comment, contribute, King‟s 1- 2 - 3! engage) with your connections.
  7. 7. 1. IDENTITY: Who You Are“Facebook is a customizable presence for an organization, product or public personality to join the conversation with Facebook users” (Facebook Pages, February 2009)Translate the essence of your library, of who you are, into a Facebook Page that speaks volumes about your: * Information * Users/Fans * Events * Photos & Video * Wall * Updates
