Brown V Board Of Education
Landmark Supreme Court Cases пЃ¬Brown v Board of Education (1954) пѓ The Background: In
the 1950 s, schools were separated by race. Linda Brown and her sister had to walk down a
dangerous railroad switchyard to get to the bus stop to their all black elementary school. There was
an all white school closer to the Brown s house, and the Brown family believed that segregated
schools violated the Constitution. пѓ The Constitutional Issue: This issue violated the Equal
Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment because segregated schools for people of race are
unconstitutional and unequal. пѓ The Outcome: The Supreme Court states that segregated schools
could never be equal to each other. The Court decided that laws requiring separate schools
violated the Fourteenth Amendment. This decision supports that all people are equal. As a
student, I am affected because people of different race are welcome to go to school where I go to
school. пЃ¬Mapp v Ohio (1961) пѓ The Background: The police were suspicious of Dollree Mapp
hiding a person suspected in a bombing. They went to her house and demanded entrance, but Mapp
would not let them in because they did not have a warrant. The police broke into her house and
found evidence of crime. At the trial, the police could not show their warrant at the U.S. Supreme
Court. пѓ The Constitutional Issue: This violated the Fourth Amendment, because the Fourth
Amendment protects the people from unreasonable search and seizure by the government. пѓ The

La Manche Power And Colonialism
La Malinche, Power and Colonialism
The Mexican Mother, known as Malinche was a creator. Through her words, she created a new
land free from the Aztecs and human sacrifice. Malinche s ability to translate the native
languages of Mexico to the Spanish invaders gave Malinche the power to stop the much
unnecessary bloodshed. Malinche was a slave, she had no power other than her ability to translate
for the Spaniards.Yet, her name still holds controversy in the Mexican community. La Malinche is
acclaimed to be the harlot of Conquistador Hernan Cortez, her name is a curse among her people.
Malinche is blamed for the suffering of the natives and is believed to be a complacent whore.
The history of Malinche was obscured by fiction and then sold to the Native population of Mexico.
The Spanish wanted the natives to believe that Malinche was the antagonist so they could deflect
the blame from themselves. This increased tensions in the native communities and helped the
Spanish achieve greater success during the colonization of Mexico. It is Ironic that the Mexican
people curse Malinche because they are feeding into the very propaganda that belittles their original
native ancestry. The Spanish believed that the natives were stupid, their traditions were savage and
held no place in their new world. The Spanish planted these seeds of guilt in regards to Malinche,
attempting to falsify history through literature and culture. Instead of embracing Malinches
contributions, her children, the Mexicans curse her name and defy their native origins. The
Spanish then achieve the satisfaction of taking all the credibility for her actions against the Aztecs.
By feeding the natives false information about their Mother, the Spanish are able to control the
perception of the uneducated. These fictions are apparent in the articles that we have read. The
seeds of hatred that the Spanish have sown, appear in the form of prejudice, racism, and sexism.
. By comparing the native mother to a harlot, the Spaniards successfully planted the seeds of
shame into every Mexican. The very same seeds Octavio Paz claims to have been planted by La
Malinche herself. These historical fallacies have been embedded into Spanish literature to promote

Summary Of Gonad The Barbarian And The Venus Flytrap
Anne McClintock s Gonad the Barbarian and the Venus Flytrap , focuses a lot of attention on how
from the beginning of history, women have been denied some of the basic rights and freedoms
that have been essential to the way that men live. Starting back from the times where they couldn t
vote and when women were basically seen as property when wedded. Women today and even in
the earlier days could not express their sexualityand could not show that they were sexual beings.
Anne McClintock gives the idea that women should be able to have the things that men have
and they should be able to express it in the same way as men. In this essay, I will analyze how
Anne McClintock views pornography as a form of pleasure that is mostly consumed by men and
how women are incorporated into the employment of the industry and even in the home setting.
Anne McClintock first talks about how women s sexuality has always been suppressed in many
cultures and societies around the world. There is a huge focus on making sure that men are taken
care of sexually and that they are able to go out and show their sexuality and not be ashamed of it.
Men are able to enjoy pornography and not feel guilty about enjoying it because it is apart of their
nature. Everyone knows that men masturbate and they are not really shy with talking about it but
when it comes to women it a foreign topic that if talked about makes you seem to promiscuous.
Anne McClintock shares her story of how she leaves South Africa and

The American Epidemic of Obesity
As Americans we have made food not only a way to live but all help us with life events, whether
emotional times or celebratory events we turn to food. However our society has been consumed
with unhealthy food options readily available. This has in turn caused a huge medical epidemic in
America. Obesity has and will put people at risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some types of
cancer. More than one third of American adults are obese (Ogden et al., 2012). By looking in depth
at the obesity epidemic in America through the three major sociological perspectives (structural
functionalist, social conflict, and symbolic interactionist) we are able to better discern this medical
issue impacting the health of American people. Structural Functionalist Perspective The structural
functionalist perspective would argue obesity in America is a necessary epidemic to our society.
After all, structural functionalist believe that all mechanisms that exist a definite meaning and are
useful to society as a whole. Structural functionalist could say that having overweight and obese
people in the world causes us to put attention on the true problems of health care. Obesity for a
structural functionalist is crucial for the continuous learning of human health and also for our love
and hate relationship with food. Structural functional would also argue that having an obese
population might inspire others to avoid the path of unhealthy habits. It would help people to make

He goes to the apartment of an old pawnbroker, Alyona Ivanovna, to get money for a watch and
to plan the crime.Afterward, he stops for a drink at a tavern, where he meets a man named
Marmeladov, who has abandoned his job and proceeded on a five day drinking binge, afraid to
return home to his family. Marmeladov tells Raskolnikov about his sickly wife, Katerina Ivanovna,
and his daughter, Sonya, who has been forced into prostitution to support the family. Raskolnikov

Sonya rushes out to find them while Raskolnikov goes back to his room and talks to Dunya. He
soon returns to the street and sees Katerina dancing and singing wildly. She collapses after a
confrontation with a policeman and, soon after being brought back to her room, dies.
Svidrigailov appears and offers to pay for the funeral and the care of the children. He reveals to
Raskolnikov that he knows Raskolnikov is the murderer. Raskolnikov wanders around in a haze
after his confession to Sonya and the death of Katerina. Razumikhin confronts him in his room,
asking him whether he has gone mad and telling him of the pain that he has caused his mother
and sister. After their conversation, Porfiry Petrovich appears and apologizes for his treatment of
Raskolnikov in the police station. Nonetheless, he does not believe Nikolai s confession. He
accuses Raskolnikov of the murders but admits that he does not have enough evidence to arrest
him. Finally, he urges him to confess, telling him that he will receive a lighter sentence if he does
so. He is in jail and Razumikhin and Dunya are

Poe s Writing Technique And Style
I have always been interested in Poe s poems and his writing technique and style. I had first
learnt about him when I had started off high school. My teacher had assigned me one of his
poems and I had to memorize it for class and then recite it. Ironically enough I was assigned The
Raven, one of his more famous poems. Ever since then I have been hooked at reading his stories
and the rest of his poems, but sadly I didn t have enough time, well not until today that is.
The first ever poem, or ever time I have heard about Edgar Allan Poe was in my 9th grade reading
class I don t really know much about Poe. Even when it was just another boring assignment I was
interested. The way he captures tragedy and the way he just write his stories is so fascinating to
me. I love the way his writing style was so dark and mysterious and I loved it even more that he
didn t only just write poems but short stories too. Edgar is truly and inspiration and I have
recently decided to write this I Search Essay on him because he is a very intriguing person and I
want to know more about his past and what inspired him to write what he does and the way that
he does. While I was researching I found out the Poe s mother, brother, foster mother, and wife
/cousin, all had died of tuberculosis. Edgar Allan Poe was born to traveling actors in Boston,
Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. He was the second of three children and his other brother,

The Effect Of Speed Pressure On Working Memory During...
Abstract
This study examined the effects of speed pressure on working memory during mental arithmetic
tasks. 392 undergraduate students working memory capacities were measured and participants
were divided into high and low working memory groups. They were then randomly assigned into
the fast or slow condition and tested with the critical stimuli compromised of addition equations.
The findings showed that fast conditions result in higher error rates than the slow conditions. The
speed pressure also caused high working memory individuals to shift from using rule based
processing to associative processing whereas low working memory individuals used associative
processing in both conditions. However, the study found that both groups show ... Show more

Previous studies (Beilock, 2008; Beilock, Kulp, Hot, Carr, 2004; Beilock Carr, 2005; Gimmig et
al., 2006; Beilock DeCaro, 2007) have examined choking under pressure and concluded that it
occurs for those with high working memory (HWM) capacities whereas low working memory
(LWM) individuals were not affected. Although this finding has been common amongst researchers,
each have examined different factors contributing towards pressure induced failure, in an attempt to
explain the phenomena and most accurately coincide with real life situations.
According to Beilock et al., (2004), explicit monitoring and the Distraction Theory are reasons as
to why skills may fail under pressure. Explicit monitoring, or self focus, causes the disruption of
automatic processes as individuals force conscious control over the task, causing poorer
performance despite the extra effort and attention (Beilock et al., 2004). In contrast, the Distraction
Theory claims that pressures fill the WM with worries and concerns over performance and task
content which in consequence competes with the resources which are normally utilised for
execution (Beilock et al., 2004). To date, most researchers have provided evidence in support for
explicit monitoring and its effects of choking under pressure whilst the Distraction Theory has not
been adequately

History Of General William Sherman
General William Sherman was in charge of the Union Army of the West. Under General Sherman,
the Union essentially tore through the deep south and the southeastern seaboard, destroying any
factories, warehouses or farmland that was used to supply Southern troops. His use of total warfare
absolutely decimated the South. I believe Sherman s March to the Sea was the most important
event we ve covered this trimester, because it purged the South of any supplies and destroyed their
economy. After Ulysses S. Grantwas promoted to the head of the Union Army, he appointed
William Sherman to his former post; general of the Union Army of the West. He was given the task
of taking the city of Atlanta, Georgia, to destroy the factories that supplied the

Ampicillin Resistance Lab Report
Discussion
As predicted the E. coli colony transformed with either the PUC18 or the lux plasmid developed
an ampicillin resistance. Which made it easier for them to not only survive but also replicate in
both the LB agar plates and the LB ampicillin rich agar plate. However the E. coli colony not
treated with the plasmids could not survive and colonize in the LB ampicillin rich agar plates.
The plate that had no ampicillin in its environment and no plasmid treated E. coli served as a
positive control for this experiment because it demonstrated how the E. coli would colonize and
grow in a normal setting. The cells in the positive control plate grew into lawn colonies because
they were not placed into a selective environment or transformed, so they had no need to acquire
ampicillin resistance. Two plates in the experiment contained E. coli cells that were transformed
with either the PUC18 or the lux plasmid but were placed in an ampicillin free environment. These
two colonies grew ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to find transformation efficiency, the total number of colonies on the plate is divided by
the total amount (Вµg) of DNA spread on the plate. All the factors that must be taken into account
while finding the transformation efficiency include; the total amount (Вµg) of plasmid DNA
used, the total volume (Вµl) of cell suspension prepared, the fraction of DNA spread on the plate
and finally the total amount (Вµg) of DNA present on the plate. In the LB/AMPC plate the
transformation efficiency was 8.2 x 103 colonies per Вµg of plasmid DNA while the LB/AMPlux
plate the transformation efficiency was 1.07 x 104 colonies per Вµg of plasmid DNA. The
transformation efficiency for the LBC and LBlux plates were not taken into account, even though
they too transformed because they were not in a restrictive environment where they needed to

Comparing The Book Thief And The Boy In Striped Pyjamas
How is innocence portrayed and corrupted in The Book Thief and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas?
The Book Thief, directed by Brian Percival, and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, directed by Mark
Herman, are both films that share similar themes and are focused on the time of war during Hitler s
reign of power. In both films, the idea of innocence is portrayed and corrupted through the
friendship of child protagonists, influence of father figures, characterisation of children in war and
the narrative perspectives. Symbolism, motifs and themes in these two films are explored to
emphasise how innocence is portrayed and corrupted throughout the texts. The Boy in The Striped
Pyjamas reflects on the horrifying events of the holocaust where the protagonist, ... Show more

The innocence of Bruno is portrayed through the stylistic device, dramatic irony, such as Not fair,
me stuck by my own and you have all your friends in there. The innocent friendship between the
two boys leads them to their deaths in the ending scene, mise en scene comes into place as the
scene shows the empty room with only the clothes and boots that were left after the boys and other
Jews got gassed. In this scene, there is a form of diegetic music being played and the film
finishes with a fading camera shot, that creates a heart breaking tone to the film and the
audience is able to feel the loss of innocence after the boys death. With a similar end of war scene
in The Book Thief, after the bombings that occurred, Liesel lost the boy she loved which is
another way that the idea of innocence has been corrupted. Within this scene the director uses a
bird s eye view angle of the death of Rudy and mise en scene is also used in this text, placing
Liesel sitting with Rudy in the middle of the ruins of their street, leaving the audience to feel
heartbroken just as The Boy in Striped Pyjamas does with the death of both boys. Although, the
friendship between child protagonists in The Book Thief, Liesel and Rudy, starts as an innocent
friendship and remains that way through most of the film, their friendship is explored through
playful love whereas the friendship between Bruno and Shmuel is explored through boundaries

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Crime Statistics
During this essay, I will be discussing recorded crime statistics and victimisation surveys as they
are our primary techniques of measuring levels and trends of crime. After briefly explaining what is
meant by these terms, I will seek to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in order to question the
extent to which they are reliable resources that provide us with accurate information.
Firstly, recorded crime statistics are collated through the collection of data by law enforcement
agencies, such as the police in England and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in America.
It focuses on the crime that is reported by the public and then what is chosen to be recorded by
the police. During the mid late 19th century, these statistics formed the basis of information about
crime, however, although they still provide raw data for publications such as the Offenders
Index, they are now viewed critically. This is because, according to Mayhew and Hough (1988),
the recorded crime statistics are adequate as a measure of police workload, but because of
unreported and unrecorded crime deficient as an index of crime .
Secondly, the Home Office funded a national victimisation survey which was originally known as
the British Crime Survey, with the purpose of interviewing a representative sample of the
population about their experiences of crime and victimisation in the last 12 months. Since 2011/12,
it is now known as the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) as Scotland and

A Rhetorical Analysis of Violent Media is Good for Kids
From early childhood, parents, teachers, and other adults instill in us that violence is bad and
unethical. We can all agree that we should avoid certain forms of violent behavior if possible;
however, it is incorrect to assume that all forms of violence is bad. In his article Violent Media is
Good For Kids , Gerald Jones argues that creative violence such as gory video games, Comic
books, and play fighting give children tools to master rage and actually help more kids than they
hurt. What the author is saying here is correct because children use these types of influences in
imaginary play at a young age, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the Incredible Hulk was a ticking time bomb and completely out of control he was a sort of
Jekel and Mr. Hyde character. Timid geek, gone raging goliath if you must. Yes, he was out of
control and frightened tearing up everything in his path, but on the other side of that, he was
also a caring good hearted person that got a good enough handle on his destructive side that he
became a hero and started working with the Avengers. Jones is wrong to imply that the only
reason these comics were good for him was due to the violence alone. This was not a character
like the Joker who just tortured and corrupted people for a laugh and killed mercilessly, there is
a reason the good guy always wins in these comics, and that is to appeal to the children reading
them and to instill that type of behavior. Everybody loves a winner so when they make Batman
or Superman triumph over The Joker or Lex Luthor the authors are instilling the value that good
triumphs over evil to their audience. This means that while yes, they were good for him because
they were violent and juvenile; they were also good because they still had those messages of
conquering the demon, or lose yourself but find yourself again. Jones goes on to persuade us by
using his son as an example.
I have watched my son living the same story transforming himself into a bloodthirsty dinosaur to
embolden himself for the plunge into preschool, a Power Ranger to muscle through a

Explain How Does Heart Rate Change With Exercise
How does heart rate change with exercise?
When someone who exercises a lot such as a person that does sports the pulse rate level rises
much less than in a person that doesn t exercise a lot or does sports. You can check your heart by
taking the tips of your first two fingers to press gently over your blood vessels on your wrist count
your pulse for 10 seconds and multiply by 6 to find your beats per minute. You want to stay
between 50percent to 85 percent of your heart rate. That is how you check your pulse.
The heart becomes stronger as a result of exercise so it can pump blood through the body with
every beat and continue working at an easy level. It might be surprising but our heart isn t really on

Seeking a Just Judiciary
In recent years, many people in the United States have acquired an oddly tilted concept of how the
judicial branch of government should function. Modern consensus postulates that the Supreme
Court is the final arbiter of the Constitution, and that its judgments cannot be challenged or changed
except through its own decision (Vieira). Curiously, however, this idea of giving the power of final
constitutional interpretation to the judiciary known in law as judicial supremacy finds no basis in
the text of the Constitution itself or in historical opinion. This doctrine is a modern construction,
and it poses an unhappily real threat to individual liberties in America. The people of our nation
deserve a judiciary that is just in its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While one may contend that there were relatively few judicial power grabs during the lifetimes of
these two presidents, there is a disturbing new legal model that extends the power of the Supreme
Court far beyond its traditional authority of constitutional arbitration. In 1965, a landmark case
known as Griswold v. Connecticut came before the Supreme Court. The ruling was, as usual, long
and technical, but the legal precedent upon which the Court based its holding had many lawyers
scratching their heads and reaching for their dictionaries. The Court confidently stated that their
holding was based upon the right to privacy , which the justices had managed to locate in a
penumbra, formed by emanations from [the Bill of Rights] (Griswold). The word penumbra, which
is used four times in this particular ruling, is not often heard in the field of law, and for good
reason. Of all things, it is a Latin astronomical term that roughly translates to secondary shadow .
Essentially, the 1965 Court was calling the enumerated rights the umbra, or primary shadow, while
claiming that there was a separate set of unenumerated rights found in the penumbra (Griswold v.
Connecticut). This idea of a constitutional penumbra, which was never suggested before the ruling
in Griswold, allows the Supreme Court to invent entirely new rights and constitutional statutes, an
ability that extends its powers into

The Problem Of Environmental Racism
In this paper, we are going to provide a quick overview of what environmental justice is and when
this phenomenon started to then analyze the dilemma of environmental racism in minorities
neighborhoods. At the same time we will try to present some solutions to the matter as well as
explain if we believe that this kind of social race problem could be addressed in a near future or it
will be ignored and forgotten by the new generations. The environmental justicemovement is tightly
related to the Civil Rights act created in 1964 and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. Many
believe that the real origin of the movement was in Warren County, North Carolina when residents
protested about a landfill placed in their county causing some serious environmental pollution. After
this event, communities around the country mainly low income, reported similar impacts in their
neighborhood and land, making everyone aware of a new wave of racial discrimination, reason
enough to get the attention of human rightsactivists who promptly took action and a new political
agenda was created. The environmental movement main purpose is to seek change in the abuse
of decisions made by people in power to the disproportional exposure of color people and other
racial minorities to polluted air, soil and water causing long term health effects by allowing the
construction of waste or nuclear facilities in the same segregated area were poor people are
located. Based on the description above many

My Teaching Style Uses The Facilitator Method Of Teaching
As an early childhood professional, I take pride in educating and caring for young children. My
preferred teaching style includes taking on a hands on, active approach to teaching and learning.
Every day brings new opportunities for me to learn with and about young learners and their
families. My teaching style is impacted by information gained from young children s home life and
communities. My students are engaged and motivated to learn in a safe, healthy, and nurturing
environment that enables them to freely explore their environments. My teaching style uses the
facilitator method of teaching. My students are encouraged to use their critical thinking skills, dig
deeper, and use previous understanding to make connections to new knowledge. Gill (2013) notes
this style trains students to ask questions through exploration; it is ideal for teaching science and

Factors Affecting The Earth s Surface Systems Undergo A...
Introduction. Over the past century there have been rapid and noticeable changes in environmental
conditions on Earth. These changes can be traced in various geospheres: alterations of the gaseous
composition of the atmosphere, major decreases in global ice volume (Cryosphere), in both: land
and water based glaciers with consequent rise of sea level (Hydrosphere), increase in the frequency
and severity of geohazards (Lithosphere) etc. Triggering mechanisms for those changes include
both: natural fluctuations of environmental processes brought about by heliophysical,
cosmophysical and tectonic factors as well as rapidly increasing contribution coming from human
anthropogenic activities via alterations of natural biogeochemical cycles. Geochemical weathering.
The Earth s surface systems undergo a series of complex interactions involving exchanges between
various geospheres within the Earth s system (the atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere and the
hydrosphere) and outside of it (helio and cosmophysical factors), through matter and energy
exchanges. Despite the fact that overall understanding about the majority of these processes and
their involvement in these interactions exists (even though rather incomplete), their quantification
and the identification on the spatial and temporal scales remain central problems for the Earth
Science community (Moquet, 2011). One of the more important ones involves quantifying the role
of geochemical weathering in the carbon (C) cycle

Walmart Smart Inventory System Essay

BUS 362 Spring, Miller
Wal Mart S.M.A.R.T System
I live close to a walmart in Burtonsville MD, so I decided to write this Paper on their Inventory
System. Wal mart, the wholesale retail monopoly, focused on developing an RFID based electronic
product code, or EPC. The electronic code would allow businesses to track shipments and inventory
automatically through a system of tags and sensors. It was a potential replacement for the manual
scanning of bar codes, a technology that itself revolutionized retail two decades earlier. Given the
nearly non existent cost of bar codes relative to RFID, several in the industry said, the EPC was a
solution in search of a problem. Wal Mart view RFID technology in their SMART system as a...

With the Telxon, price changes for each item can be implemented only three times a day with the
current system and processes. Wal Mart is testing LCD shelf tags from NCR that are powered and
controlled by infrared light units on the ceiling and can be changed in real time, concurrent with
changes at the point of sale registers.
The Strengths of The SMART Inventory System are, the actual database has to be enormous.
There are so many products that the Wal Mart keeps track of. All of which must be in the same
database because products they don t carry will still scan and give all the detailed information of
those Products. This is helpful because it allows people to return products from a Mega Wal Mart
that carries a much larger stock than a regular Wal Mart. Other Strengths are that the SMART
system is linked to the cash registers. When a product is sold, inventory is updated automatically.
On hand counts are updated and on some products they are reordered automatically, depending on
how many are left. With in addition to the RFID technology.
Wal mart uses smart tag sensors on garments to track better inventory controls, Wal Mart workers
will be able to quickly learn, which size of a particular brand product is missing, with the aim of
ensuring shelves are optimally stocked and inventory

The Valley of Ashes as Metaphor in The Great Gatsby Essay
The Valley of Ashes as Metaphor in The Great Gatsby
Throughout F. Scott Fitzgerald s The Great Gatsby, location is a critical motif. The contrasts
between East and West, East Egg and West Egg, and the two Eggs and New York serve
important thematic roles and provide the backdrops for the main conflict. Yet, there needs to be a
middle ground between each of these sites, a buffer zone, as it were; there is the great distance
that separates East from West; there is the bay that separates East Egg from West Egg; and, there is
the Valleyof Ashes that separates Long Island from New York. The last of these is probably the
most striking. Yet, the traditional literal interpretationdoes not serve Fitzgerald s theme as well as a

If it is remembered that ashes circa the turn of the century often referred to garbage, then it is
possible to interpret the valley of ashes as a dumping ground. (23) The ash heaps, then, are piles
of garbage, and the repeated references to waste land, as opposed to wasteland, now make more
sense, as does George Wilson s use of a piece of waste to wipe his hands. (24 5) For Fitzgerald,
the American dream is to get rich and become socially acceptable; Wilson, who has failed, has
wasted his life, and is now down in the dumps. He has been cast away by society, just like the rest
of the refuse that surrounds him. This, then, seems to be the fate of middle class dreams despite
being conceived in a land filled with opportunity, they all end up in the landfill.
Yet, there are still inconsistencies with this interpretation, which also apply to the stricter literal
view; where does the gray, scrawny Italian child down the road by the railroad tracks come
from? (26) Where do the workmen come from? (137) If the valley is so isolated and desolate
how could Nick even imagine there would be an old man regaling little boys with the story of
Myrtle s death? (156) How does such a crowd accumulate next to a dumping ground? (156 7) Why
would Dr. T. J. Eckleburg advertise there, train delays notwithstanding? (23) These concerns cannot
be fully explained away by the

Essay on John Coltrane
John Coltrane: An Experimental Musician
Jazz, which evolved from African American folk music, has developed and changed over the last
century to become an art form in America. It places particular importance on inventive self
interpretation. Rather than relying on a written piece, the artist improvises. Jazz has taken many
forms over the past seventy years; there is almost always a single person who can be credited with
the evolution of that sound. From Thelonius Monk, and his bebop, to Dizzy Gillespie s big band, to
Miles Davis cool jazz, or to John Coltrane s free jazz; America s music has been developed and
refined countless times through individual experimentation and innovation. In my opinion the most

Upon his return from Hawaii a year later, Coltrane launched his music career. In the late nineteen
forties, Coltrane began playing with several different R amp;B groups in small bars and clubs
around Philadelphia. Many of the clubs had a tradition of walking the bar (to walk on top of the
bar while playing one s instrument). Coltrane was embarrassed having to go through this custom
every night. This give him a negative image about himself and is abilities His self esteem was
crushed even further when critics said his music was too bizarre. Soon Coltrane became very
depressed, and searching for a way out, he turned to heroin. Heroin was a very popular drug
among black musicians in the forties. It was a form of escape that, at first, brought them together,
but in the end triggered lives and careers to collapse.
Coltrane was invited to play in Dizzy Gillespie s his big band in 49. Gillespie had been a very
significant figure in the bebop movement. Bebop was a style of jazz, popular during the late
thirties and forties. It was characterized by integrating faster tempos, and more complex phrases
than the jazz of earlier years. Gillespie s band offered

selected for Best American Essays in 2005. Doyle s intended audience is the general population,
though his writing style attracts both the logical reader and the hopeless romantics who seek
metaphors pointing to love in any way. The beginning of the essayprovides insight to general
information about the hummingbird, which holds the smallest, capable, and fragile heartin the

factual support, as well as emotional triggers to provide a semblance of deep understanding between
the rhetorician and the audience.
His writing style is poetic, fluctuating between short and concise to long, organic, and flowing
sentence structures. For example, he utilizes short, concise sentence structures to imitate the quick
fluttering of the hummingbird s flying patterns: Consider the hummingbird for a long moment. A
hummingbird s heart beats ten times a second. A hummingbird s heart is the size of a pencil
eraser. A hummingbird s heart is a lot of the hummingbird (273) . In contrast to the short, concise
sentences, he uses the opposite effect when describing the heart of the blue whale. Instead, he
uses long sentences and traditional words that are separated by commas to force his readers to
read slowly and deliberately: . . . for next to nothing is known of the mating habits, travel patterns,
diet, social life, language, social structure, diseases, spirituality, wars, stories, despairs, and arts of
the blue whale (274). He also uses other methods to evoke feeling from his readers.

How Aristarchus Made A Large Jump From Terrestrial...
How Aristarchus made a large jump from terrestrial measurements of scale to the celestial is truly
impressive. Without any measures of the sizes of and distances to any celestial objects,
Aristarchus was able to measure both for the Moon. He was able to use something he knew about
the Earth and a bit of smart geometry to deduce the size of the Earths shadow at the distance of the
Moon. By watching the Moon go through the Earth s shadow which is formally known as a lunar
eclipse, Aristarchus could determine the ratio between the size of the shadow at the distance to the
Moon and the size of the Moon.
Aristarchus knew that on average two times a year, the surface of the full Moon becomes dark for
a period ranging up to around two hours. It was reasoned that during these times, the Moon was
passing through the shadow cast by the Earth, known as a lunar eclipse. The eclipse would only
occur during the full Moon because that s the time when the Moon is on the opposite side of the
Earth from the Sun. Aristarchus realized that the longest lunar eclipses must occur when the Moon
passes right through the center of the Earth s shadow, and so that the angular size of the Earth s
shadow could be measured by noting the difference in the position of the Moon before and after
the eclipse. He could then compare this angular size to the angular size of the Moon to get the ratio
between them. He used the formula Now by using the formula.
The moon could fit into earth roughly

If an individual is witnessing violence this is going to skew their perspective about what is
deemed appropriate social behavior. In the short documentary, A Road from Crime, the narrator
Allan Weaver talks about socialization agents that caused him to participate in deviant behavior,
commit crimes as well as become violent. Weaver mentions that he witnessed violent behavior
between his parents who unknowingly taught him that it was a way of gaining power and
control. If it acceptable in the home, it must be acceptable outside of it. In addition, it is
mentioned that educational staff and teachers saw him as a troublesome kid , which affected
his sense of self. When an individual is viewed by others as bad and violent they begin to submit
to that role and do what is expected of it thus committing crimes and engaging in fights. Weaver
also mentions peer groups, another socialization agent, as part of the reason he turned to a life
of crime as a young kid. He recalls the expectation to play a role in the gang as part of being in a
hard man culture . This means he was expected to act tough, violent and without mercy. In the
documentary, Weaver interviews former incarcerated people, which further solidifies the role of
socialization as it relates to deviance and crime on a micro scale. Ex inmates, Terry and Greg,
were interviewed and mentioned peer groups and family as key reasons for their spiral into drugs
and crime. However,

subject is still very controversial. While some people argue that we might not be ready yet

Cystic Fibrosis Analysis
To understand the effects that Cystic Fibrosis has, it is important to discuss CFTR synthesis and
trafficking. Mutations in the CFTR results in protein misfolding, causing a defect in cellular
processing and trafficking that targets the protein for degradation and reduces the quantity of CFTR
at the cellsurface [56]. In order for the CFTR to function correctly, then it must be synthesized,
folded, and transported to the apical membrane of the cell without problem. The CFTR passes
through quality control systems to get rid of misfolded proteins that would not function properly
or that could become damaged [16]. It is apparent that only 33% of CFTR folds correctly and is
allowed to leave the endoplasmic reticulum[8]. The nucleus is the site... Show more content on

One system detects defects in the cytosolic parts of the CFTR while the other detects defects
within the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. It is apparent that ubiquitylating proteins work
with specific factors in order to detect misfolding. For example, Hsp70 detects mutations in the
cytosolic regions of the CFTR. It is suspected that Hsp70 keeps the CFTR soluble until the E3
ligase CHIP binds with it. The complex that forms between these two redirects the CFTR to the
degradation pathway. Derlin 1 is involved with detecting defects in the endoplasmic reticulum
membrane and is involved in the retro translocation of CFTR from the endoplasmic reticulum so
that it can be send to the proteasome for degradation [20]. If the CFTR protein is folded correctly
within the endoplasmic reticulum, then it is sent to the Golgi apparatus. The coat protein
complex II (COPII), which is found within the ER membrane, helps to maintain the correct CFTR
structure and location, conformation, and protein protein interactions as this occurs. Final
processing for the CFTR is carried out within the Golgi, as the CFTR replaces a mannose
enriched side chain with a mature complex oligosaccharide side chain. After this is completed, the
CFTR is moved to the apical membrane where it has a half life of 12 to 24 hours. If a CFTR is
functioning poorly within the membrane, then it can be recognized by Hsc70 and then

Analyzing The Beginning Of Science
In the beginning, ...what was in the beginning? Science is only starting to scratch the surface of
our origins, but all these findings are rather recent. Humans didn t always have carbon dating and
archaeology to find answers about their past, so they had to draw their own conclusions based off
of their own lifestyles. So back to the earlier question, what was in the beginning? According to the
Mayans Popol Vuh, there was nothing. Then the existing deities, Heart of Sky and the Plumed
Serpent, joined together to give themselves the power to form the Earthfrom the water with their
words. Heart of Sky met with the Plumed Serpent, and together they agreed on the creation of man,
who would maintain the Earth and worship them. So they created animals, and made them the
guardians of the forest. However, when the creators ordered the animals to speak, they could only
screech and howl. Frustrated, the gods allowed them to remain guardians of the forest, but decreed
that they should be eaten. After this attempt, four sub deities, the Modeler, the Maker, the Begetter,
and the Bearer, attempt to make humanity out of clay. However, this creation, while being
humanoid, cannot sustain itself and crumbles and falls apart. Next, the wooden humans, the
manikins are created, but they know no gods, and are ugly, and lead their lives without care for
their environment. The manikins are eventually killed by the animals and cookery. Finally, the
gods pull themselves together, and put their

Even those who acquire the physical ability to see may be blind to truth and the comprehension of
it. Although humans have a large capacity for knowledge, even the smartest individual is prone to

theme of constant and initial blindness becomes recurring in Sophocles Oedipus the King. This

you live with. (Teiresias, lines 465 468.) As the play progresses, it is revealed that Teiresias
accusation about Oedipus prophecy is indeed correct. The irony that is held in this particular scene
involving Oedipus and Tiresias becomes a significant element in the theme of blindness throughout
the play. Although Teiresias is physically blind, he can accurately see the horror of Oedipus past,
present and future. On the contrary, Oedipus can physically see clearly but is absolutely blind
towards his inevitable fate that the gods placed upon

Best Route for Economic Development for Poor Countries
Whether liberal democracy, illiberal democracy or authoritarian rule is the best route to economic
development for low income countries
Introduction
Democracy and economic development are two concepts that were not related initially, however,
with the rise of democracies and the subsequent economic development there is an established
correlation between the two concepts. The question that this paper will seek to address is which is
the best regime for economic development . In responding tothis question it is significant to first
distinguish between the different regimes that are available; liberal democracy, illiberal democracy
and authoritarianism. Additionally, is prudent to define development before arriving at a consensus

The idea is that there is a centrality between the mode of government and the economy. The
economy is a sub structure of society and this substructure determines the overall structure of the
society, including politics. Democracy is primary in economic development as it is a facilitator of
economic development. Democracy provides the basic foundation for economic development and
values such as the, freedom of speech, rule of law, freedom of association, separation of powers and
protection of human rights provide an institutional setting and process for economic development.
Democracy facilitates economic liberation, provides mobilization of resources and provides a better
environment for economic development (Gerring, Thacker Alfaro 2012).
Democracy and development are complimentary and they reinforce each other and aids
development through the mechanism of accountability. Accountability acts to limit the abuse of
power by the executive and provides checks for undesired interventions in the economy.
Transparency is also another factor that is important in economic development and institutions that
operate with a greater degree of openness are more likely to develop. Political transparency is also
essential in liberal democracies as well as essential information dispensing institutions and press that
is free from political control. Such

My Personal Goals Essay
As a child and even as a teenager one tends to make dreams and set goals for life. On occasion
these goals are far stretched and sometimes even fairy tale like, we tend to see life through a rose
colored glass, not taking into account the many sidetracks life throws our way. At that stage in life
our goals tend to be less focused and somewhat unreachable. However, the process of growing up,
or maturing, tends organized and center our goals, we learn to make compromises and set goals
for our goals. There are different types of goals, short term and long term. I have learned to
separate the many goals I have into three main categories: family, professional and personal.

undivided attention for a certain period of time.
The second family short term goal takes into account my marriage. In order to raise happy and
healthy children, a happy and healthy relationship with one s spouse is paramount. In order to
achieve this goal my husband and I have decided to also dedicate more time for the two of us.
For the next year we have made an agreement to take at least one vacation together, so that we
may increase the bond that brought us together. We have also decided that for the next three year
we will spend Holidays as a family so that we may create our own family traditions, we will do
whatever is in our power to spend Holidays together, that includes not working or making other
plans with the rest of our immediate families.
On many occasions my personal goals have come before my professional aspirations. A career
in the medical field has always been something I have looked forward to. As a child I wanted
and dreamed of being a doctor, however due to the choices I made in life and the priorities that I
had not thought of, I have come to realize that my childhood dream may not come true. Yet, I
was able to compromise and make short and long term goals that will lead me into a career in
the medical field. My long term goal is to enter the medical field world and be a respected
contributor to it. I want to be able to help others in the time of need. In

The Case Of Legal Drinking Age
The final situation I have had concerning unclear boundaries involved me and a professor. This
individual was someone I had grown to know and respect and took several courses under. The
incident occurred after I had graduated from Western Carolina University with my bachelor s
degrees while I was living in Cullowhee over the summer. I was invited to the professor s house
along with another former student to eat dinner with him and his wife. While we were eating the
meal, the professor gave me and the other student a glass of wine to go with dinner. Even though
I was of legal drinking age and was no longer a student of the professor s, it felt strange to have a
professor provide me alcohol.
Also, I felt uncomfortable being in the professor s home since it was the first time I had
socialized with a professor outside of a school environment. I later discussed the event with the
other student to inquire if the situation also made her uncomfortable. The individual disclosed that
she did not feel uncomfortable since this was not her first time having dinner with the professor
and his wife. I did not talk about how this incident made me feel with my professor. The reason
the boundaries were unclear in this situation was that there was a multiple relationship. I was now
the professor s former student as well as an individual who had a social relationship with the
professor.
Unlike the two previous examples, I was not the individual with a position of power. Since the

Similarities Between Animal Farm And The Truman Show
How can achieve the good life? How can we make make a utopia? These are some of the
questions when a human gets enough power and control! Within both of the stories, Animal
Farm (written by George Orwell) and The Truman Show (directed by Peter Weir). Both author
and director explore these three themes . The good life, a utopia and power are some of the keys to
living a full and grateful life. To have a utopia you must have a good life and to have a good life
you must have power within your life.
In the movie The Truman Show Peter Weirshows that power is to control another person s life in
one way or another. Whereas in animal farm to have power is to control.
The main point can be shown within christof who is the director of the show who controls where
truman worked, where he lived and even who he marries. Christof has ultimate power over
truman and whatever he does until Truman finds his own freedom within the set, this was
shown in one of the end scenes when Christof makes the weather horrible so truman couldn t
escape from the dome. This shows that Christof had the most power because he could control
another person s life and what they did. Similarly in animal farm power is shown in control and
that to have power you have to control over a group, this is shown at the start when farmer jones
is in control of all of the animals on the farm and then when the pigs take over to controll all of the
other animals. These were shown when the pigs had to have a farm vote to

The Twisted Darkness Analysis
The Twisted Darkness
Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote and published many novels and short stories throughout his career,
including several published anonymously. More often readers find a his work to be different
types of romance followed and surrounded with twists of darkness. Based on Hawthorne s
biography you can find most of his characters and the darkness in his stories, come from personal
experience. The mix of success and failure during Hawthorne s writing career resembles parts in
his story The Devil in Manuscript leading to an unfathomable twist for his readers. Born in Salem
Massachusetts in 1804, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born into a prominent family. His ancestors were
some of the earliest to settle in the country; including Nathaniel s late relative John Hathorne who
stood as a judge during the Salem witch trials. The passing of his father to yellow fever,
Nathaniel at age four was raised by his widowed mother in mournful seclusion (Marks 1). Shortly
after the death of his father, his mother moved the family to Maine in 1815 where poetry and
romance peaked Hawthorne s interest (Marks 1).
Graduating Bowdoin College at the age of twenty five, Hawthorne returned to Salem where he
began his writing allegorical stories concerning the moral values of New England (Marks 1).
Nonetheless at just twenty eight years of age, Hawthorne anonymously published his first novel
Fanshawe covering his time spent in college. Disgusted after the novel went virtually unnoticed, his

Malvolio In Twelfth Night
Count Malvolio
In the play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare there are many rising conflicts that occur,
Malvolio being the cause of a great deal. His naive personality plays a key role is the way he acts
towards others, more specifically, Olivia. Malvolio s naive personality reflects on his devotion
towards Olivia, he cares deeply for her and so he is dedicated and will do about anything he is told.
Although Malvolio feels one way towards Olivia, she does not feel the same way. Malvolio s
overconfidence in himself leads him to be a bigger fool than he thinks he is. Portraying a naive,
devoted and overconfident persona leads someone to be so blindly in love and to foresee reality for
what it really is.

Malvolio is Olivia s servant, he does not just do the bare minimum, but rather to the above and
beyond of her requests. He is at her call almost immediately and is ready to do whatever is told. I
may command where I adore. Why she may command me: I serve her, she is my lady (2.5.119
120) Malvolio dreams of the day when Olivia feels the same way towards him as he feels
towards her. He fantasizes of how it would feel to be her husband and the master of her house,
having power over all of the other members of the house that are not his absolute favourites. He
will do just about anything to succeed this goal because whatever that has to be done to gain her
love is worth it. For example, although wearing yellow stockings and tying ribbon around your
knees may be majority s idea of embarrassing, Malvolio still does it, just because Olivia said so.
Not only does Malvolio do things to impress Olivia directly but he goes out of his way to better
Olivia s life. My masters are you mad? Or what are you? Have you no wit, manners, nor honesty,
but to gabble like tinkers at this time of night? Do you make an ale house of my lady s house,
that you squeak out your coziers catches without any mitigation or remorse of voice? Is there no
respect of place, persons, nor time in you? (2.3.87 93) Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are complete
drunks who have no respect for Olivia s house. They both get rowdy and have no sense of good
behavior. Malvolio feels as though Sir Toby and Sir Andrew are acting like unmannered
commoners instead of members of nobility. He calls them out because he does not want Olivia
having to deal with

Essay about Pagan Aspects in Beowulf
Scholars have argued about the religious stance of the epic poem Beowulf for centuries. Although
the man who put the poem down on paper, known as the Beowulf poet, was a devout Christian, the
actual poem itself is pagan. There are many clues in the epic that lead us to this conclusion such as
the numerous references to pagan symbols, namely the symbol of fate. Also, the central idea of
revenge in the poem opposes the ideas of Christianity. The poem also contains many breaches of the
Ten Commandments, which prove that the story is not Christian. However, the biggest clue to the
paganism of Beowulfis the scene that contains the burial of Beowulf and the building and
idolization of the tower, all of which go directly against the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

There is no evidence anywhere that leads us to believe that poison is part of the Christian
religion, again emphasizing the paganism of the poem. Although all of these are important
pagan symbols that lead us to believe that this poem is not Christian, probably the most
significant pagan symbol is that of fate. The idea of fate ruled the lives of the pagans. Their
belief was that you were born with a fate, and there was nothing that could change this destiny.
This idea becomes apparent in Beowulf several times. As Beowulf is dying he refers to his
leaving this earth as just part of his destiny when he says that [m]y days have gone by as fate
willed (Norton 1604). The idea of fate is called on again when Beowulf asks Wiglaf to succeed
him as king of the Geats. He tells Wiglaf that he would have given the honor to his son, if he had
one, but fate did not allow it. We see a reference to fate a final time when Wiglaf speaks of
Beowulf after his death. He offers that as much as Beowulf s people tried to convince him to
leave well enough alone, to allow the monster to live on forever, there was no changing Beowulf
s destiny. Beowulf s [f]ate, and his will, [w]ere too strong (Norton 1611). Fate is clearly a non
Christian idea, and its presence in the poem helps the case for Beowulf being a pagan story.
A huge theme in Beowulf is the revenge ethic that all of the characters possess. During the time in

Forensic Science And The Scientific Examination Of Evidence
The scientific examination of evidence in criminal cases found in a crime scene is called forensic
science. Forensic scientists use the same technology, tools and methods used by other scientists
doing other types of research, including microscopes, computers, and lasers. As forensic science
has advanced over the years, so has the ability to gather evidence and solve crimes. At crime
scenes, lasers provide lighting to track blood sample that not visible to the naked eye. Forensic
imaging technology is technology that lets the first responding local police department or crime
scene investigators immediately send a photo or fingerprintimage to a central database for
identification. Computers can enhance pictures taken by a camera and use features like the facial
recognition software to clearly identify blurred images. Lasers can also vaporize small portions of
paint specimens to determine the exact paint used on a car in a hit and run case. Although this
science has been used for years, wrongful convictions have brought to the attention that forensic
sciencehas been faulty for decades. The chilling truth is that forensic science has contributed to
convicting innocent people over the decades and will continue to do so if the normality continues.
According to the Virginia Law Review, fingerprint analysis which are based on humans using or

The Treatment Of Indians By The French And Indians Essay
They Made Us Many Promises The treatment of Indians by the French in Canada and English in
Massachusetts was dramatic. The French had proceeded there way to North America and arrived in
the 1500 s and was interested in establishing trading posts. There were settlements on St. Lawrence
River that came to the point as a serving (as a base from which to invade and conquer the kingdom
of Saguenay). The trade between the French and Indians was a development from these enterprises
in trading military forts. There were many items that were traded such as beaver pelts, furs, textile,
and metal that had attractions for both trading partners. The indigenous they interact with Huron in

to convert them to Catholicism. The Hurons initially tolerate these conversions efforts, but grow to
resent them. The hurons are exposed to disease that kills many of them. The French don t provide
adequate protection against the Iroquois. Among the disease victims were chefs, clan leaders, wise
elders, and skilled craftspeople. The Iroquois attack the Hurons and destroy their capital. The
English desire for land created an antagonistic relationship with Wampanoag. The Puritans and the
religious motivations for Plymouth are important. The interaction with Wampanoag the English

Dhcp, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol ( Dhcp )
DHCP Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), allows a computer to join a network
without a statically assigned Internet Protocol (IP) address (Mitchell, n.d., para 1). With DHCP a
device can be assigned a unique IP address, as it joins the network (Mitchell, n.d., para 1). DHCP is
done on a server, and parameters are set on the pool of IP addresses that can be assigned (Mitchell,
n.d., para 4). In Server 2012 there are options to allow for fault tolerance for DHCP. The three
options available including, a failover cluster, setting up a split scope DHCP, and a DHCP failover
(De Clercq, 2014). It is recommended that Kris Corporation uses fault tolerance for DHCP. The
recommended method of fault tolerance is DHCP failover, which is new in Server 2012. This
option can replicate a complete DHCP scope to another DHCP server (De Clercq, 2014). When
configuring there is an option to use a hot standby or to do load sharing (De Clercq, 2014). Hot
standby uses one server as the active DHCP server, the second server is only used if the first DHCP
server is not available (De Clercq, 2014). Load sharing uses both DHCP server at the same time,
and the request are shared between the two servers (De Clercq, 2014). Load sharing is the default
option, and the recommended option for Kris Corporation. Kris Corporation is interested in
tracking IP addresses of all of the devices on the network. This can be done using IP address

The Power of Symbols This is a story about symbols can shape a novel for the good or worse.
They play a pivotal role in the plot, and often can be metaphors relating to the real world or
something that is important. Symbols are not just metaphors that are put there on accident, they are

and shows how and why they are used. In Lord of the Flies, William Golding depicts the conch

Conch! Shouted Jack. We don t need the conch anymore (101 102). This is important because is

which is a metaphor for the world represents order. As Jack is explaining the rules for his
reckless society he delcrests that, And the conch doesn t count at this end of the island (126).
Jack is clearly does not want order or a civilized island. He is disrespecting the conch, and possibly
throwing his life away. As the boys are talking in their circle, Jack seized the conch (36).
Jack shows disrespect to the conc and does not seem to care about it. When the conch is in the
wrong hands, bad things will come, this shows how powerful it can be. One person holding a
conch shell may determine the fate of the island. Lord of the Flies is a novel about how symbols
can dictate someone s fate and be the difference between life and death. Symbols can often be
metaphors, that will dictate how the story goes. Without symbols, a novel would not be complete,
and the characters would not have survived. Symbols are a necessity, which can often lead to the

  • 3. Brown V Board Of Education Landmark Supreme Court Cases пЃ¬Brown v Board of Education (1954) пѓ The Background: In the 1950 s, schools were separated by race. Linda Brown and her sister had to walk down a dangerous railroad switchyard to get to the bus stop to their all black elementary school. There was an all white school closer to the Brown s house, and the Brown family believed that segregated schools violated the Constitution. пѓ The Constitutional Issue: This issue violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth amendment because segregated schools for people of race are unconstitutional and unequal. пѓ The Outcome: The Supreme Court states that segregated schools could never be equal to each other. The Court decided that laws requiring separate schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment. This decision supports that all people are equal. As a student, I am affected because people of different race are welcome to go to school where I go to school. пЃ¬Mapp v Ohio (1961) пѓ The Background: The police were suspicious of Dollree Mapp hiding a person suspected in a bombing. They went to her house and demanded entrance, but Mapp would not let them in because they did not have a warrant. The police broke into her house and found evidence of crime. At the trial, the police could not show their warrant at the U.S. Supreme Court. пѓ The Constitutional Issue: This violated the Fourth Amendment, because the Fourth Amendment protects the people from unreasonable search and seizure by the government. пѓ The ... • 4. La Manche Power And Colonialism La Malinche, Power and Colonialism The Mexican Mother, known as Malinche was a creator. Through her words, she created a new land free from the Aztecs and human sacrifice. Malinche s ability to translate the native languages of Mexico to the Spanish invaders gave Malinche the power to stop the much unnecessary bloodshed. Malinche was a slave, she had no power other than her ability to translate for the Spaniards.Yet, her name still holds controversy in the Mexican community. La Malinche is acclaimed to be the harlot of Conquistador Hernan Cortez, her name is a curse among her people. Malinche is blamed for the suffering of the natives and is believed to be a complacent whore. The history of Malinche was obscured by fiction and then sold to the Native population of Mexico. The Spanish wanted the natives to believe that Malinche was the antagonist so they could deflect the blame from themselves. This increased tensions in the native communities and helped the Spanish achieve greater success during the colonization of Mexico. It is Ironic that the Mexican people curse Malinche because they are feeding into the very propaganda that belittles their original native ancestry. The Spanish believed that the natives were stupid, their traditions were savage and held no place in their new world. The Spanish planted these seeds of guilt in regards to Malinche, attempting to falsify history through literature and culture. Instead of embracing Malinches contributions, her children, the Mexicans curse her name and defy their native origins. The Spanish then achieve the satisfaction of taking all the credibility for her actions against the Aztecs. By feeding the natives false information about their Mother, the Spanish are able to control the perception of the uneducated. These fictions are apparent in the articles that we have read. The seeds of hatred that the Spanish have sown, appear in the form of prejudice, racism, and sexism. . By comparing the native mother to a harlot, the Spaniards successfully planted the seeds of shame into every Mexican. The very same seeds Octavio Paz claims to have been planted by La Malinche herself. These historical fallacies have been embedded into Spanish literature to promote the ... • 5. Summary Of Gonad The Barbarian And The Venus Flytrap Anne McClintock s Gonad the Barbarian and the Venus Flytrap , focuses a lot of attention on how from the beginning of history, women have been denied some of the basic rights and freedoms that have been essential to the way that men live. Starting back from the times where they couldn t vote and when women were basically seen as property when wedded. Women today and even in the earlier days could not express their sexualityand could not show that they were sexual beings. Anne McClintock gives the idea that women should be able to have the things that men have and they should be able to express it in the same way as men. In this essay, I will analyze how Anne McClintock views pornography as a form of pleasure that is mostly consumed by men and how women are incorporated into the employment of the industry and even in the home setting. Anne McClintock first talks about how women s sexuality has always been suppressed in many cultures and societies around the world. There is a huge focus on making sure that men are taken care of sexually and that they are able to go out and show their sexuality and not be ashamed of it. Men are able to enjoy pornography and not feel guilty about enjoying it because it is apart of their nature. Everyone knows that men masturbate and they are not really shy with talking about it but when it comes to women it a foreign topic that if talked about makes you seem to promiscuous. Anne McClintock shares her story of how she leaves South Africa and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. The American Epidemic of Obesity As Americans we have made food not only a way to live but all help us with life events, whether emotional times or celebratory events we turn to food. However our society has been consumed with unhealthy food options readily available. This has in turn caused a huge medical epidemic in America. Obesity has and will put people at risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some types of cancer. More than one third of American adults are obese (Ogden et al., 2012). By looking in depth at the obesity epidemic in America through the three major sociological perspectives (structural functionalist, social conflict, and symbolic interactionist) we are able to better discern this medical issue impacting the health of American people. Structural Functionalist Perspective The structural functionalist perspective would argue obesity in America is a necessary epidemic to our society. After all, structural functionalist believe that all mechanisms that exist a definite meaning and are useful to society as a whole. Structural functionalist could say that having overweight and obese people in the world causes us to put attention on the true problems of health care. Obesity for a structural functionalist is crucial for the continuous learning of human health and also for our love and hate relationship with food. Structural functional would also argue that having an obese population might inspire others to avoid the path of unhealthy habits. It would help people to make ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. Poe s Writing Technique And Style I have always been interested in Poe s poems and his writing technique and style. I had first learnt about him when I had started off high school. My teacher had assigned me one of his poems and I had to memorize it for class and then recite it. Ironically enough I was assigned The Raven, one of his more famous poems. Ever since then I have been hooked at reading his stories and the rest of his poems, but sadly I didn t have enough time, well not until today that is. The first ever poem, or ever time I have heard about Edgar Allan Poe was in my 9th grade reading class I don t really know much about Poe. Even when it was just another boring assignment I was interested. The way he captures tragedy and the way he just write his stories is so fascinating to me. I love the way his writing style was so dark and mysterious and I loved it even more that he didn t only just write poems but short stories too. Edgar is truly and inspiration and I have recently decided to write this I Search Essay on him because he is a very intriguing person and I want to know more about his past and what inspired him to write what he does and the way that he does. While I was researching I found out the Poe s mother, brother, foster mother, and wife /cousin, all had died of tuberculosis. • 9. The Effect Of Speed Pressure On Working Memory During... Abstract This study examined the effects of speed pressure on working memory during mental arithmetic tasks. 392 undergraduate students working memory capacities were measured and participants were divided into high and low working memory groups. They were then randomly assigned into the fast or slow condition and tested with the critical stimuli compromised of addition equations. The findings showed that fast conditions result in higher error rates than the slow conditions. The speed pressure also caused high working memory individuals to shift from using rule based processing to associative processing whereas low working memory individuals used associative processing in both conditions. However, the study found that both groups show ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Previous studies (Beilock, 2008; Beilock, Kulp, Hot, Carr, 2004; Beilock Carr, 2005; Gimmig et al., 2006; Beilock DeCaro, 2007) have examined choking under pressure and concluded that it occurs for those with high working memory (HWM) capacities whereas low working memory (LWM) individuals were not affected. Although this finding has been common amongst researchers, each have examined different factors contributing towards pressure induced failure, in an attempt to explain the phenomena and most accurately coincide with real life situations. According to Beilock et al., (2004), explicit monitoring and the Distraction Theory are reasons as to why skills may fail under pressure. Explicit monitoring, or self focus, causes the disruption of automatic processes as individuals force conscious control over the task, causing poorer performance despite the extra effort and attention (Beilock et al., 2004). In contrast, the Distraction Theory claims that pressures fill the WM with worries and concerns over performance and task content which in consequence competes with the resources which are normally utilised for execution (Beilock et al., 2004). To date, most researchers have provided evidence in support for explicit monitoring and its effects of choking under pressure whilst the Distraction Theory has not been adequately ... Under General Sherman, the Union essentially tore through the deep south and the southeastern seaboard, destroying any factories, warehouses or farmland that was used to supply Southern troops. His use of total warfare absolutely decimated the South. I believe Sherman s March to the Sea was the most important event we ve covered this trimester, because it purged the South of any supplies and destroyed their economy. After Ulysses S. • 11. Ampicillin Resistance Lab Report Discussion As predicted the E. coli colony transformed with either the PUC18 or the lux plasmid developed an ampicillin resistance. Which made it easier for them to not only survive but also replicate in both the LB agar plates and the LB ampicillin rich agar plate. However the E. coli colony not treated with the plasmids could not survive and colonize in the LB ampicillin rich agar plates. The plate that had no ampicillin in its environment and no plasmid treated E. coli served as a positive control for this experiment because it demonstrated how the E. coli would colonize and grow in a normal setting. The cells in the positive control plate grew into lawn colonies because they were not placed into a selective environment or transformed, so they had no need to acquire ampicillin resistance. Two plates in the experiment contained E. coli cells that were transformed with either the PUC18 or the lux plasmid but were placed in an ampicillin free environment. These two colonies grew ... • 12. Comparing The Book Thief And The Boy In Striped Pyjamas How is innocence portrayed and corrupted in The Book Thief and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas? The Book Thief, directed by Brian Percival, and The Boy in Striped Pyjamas, directed by Mark Herman, are both films that share similar themes and are focused on the time of war during Hitler s reign of power. In both films, the idea of innocence is portrayed and corrupted through the friendship of child protagonists, influence of father figures, characterisation of children in war and the narrative perspectives. Symbolism, motifs and themes in these two films are explored to emphasise how innocence is portrayed and corrupted throughout the texts. The Boy in The Striped Pyjamas reflects on the horrifying events of the holocaust where the protagonist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The innocence of Bruno is portrayed through the stylistic device, dramatic irony, such as Not fair, me stuck by my own and you have all your friends in there. The innocent friendship between the two boys leads them to their deaths in the ending scene, mise en scene comes into place as the scene shows the empty room with only the clothes and boots that were left after the boys and other Jews got gassed. In this scene, there is a form of diegetic music being played and the film finishes with a fading camera shot, that creates a heart breaking tone to the film and the audience is able to feel the loss of innocence after the boys death. With a similar end of war scene in The Book Thief, after the bombings that occurred, Liesel lost the boy she loved which is another way that the idea of innocence has been corrupted. Within this scene the director uses a bird s eye view angle of the death of Rudy and mise en scene is also used in this text, placing Liesel sitting with Rudy in the middle of the ruins of their street, leaving the audience to feel heartbroken just as The Boy in Striped Pyjamas does with the death of both boys. Although, the friendship between child protagonists in The Book Thief, Liesel and Rudy, starts as an innocent friendship and remains that way through most of the film, their friendship is explored through playful love whereas the friendship between Bruno and Shmuel is explored through boundaries ... • 14. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Crime Statistics During this essay, I will be discussing recorded crime statistics and victimisation surveys as they are our primary techniques of measuring levels and trends of crime. After briefly explaining what is meant by these terms, I will seek to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses in order to question the extent to which they are reliable resources that provide us with accurate information. Firstly, recorded crime statistics are collated through the collection of data by law enforcement agencies, such as the police in England and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in America. It focuses on the crime that is reported by the public and then what is chosen to be recorded by the police. During the mid late 19th century, these statistics formed the basis of information about crime, however, although they still provide raw data for publications such as the Offenders Index, they are now viewed critically. This is because, according to Mayhew and Hough (1988), the recorded crime statistics are adequate as a measure of police workload, but because of unreported and unrecorded crime deficient as an index of crime . Secondly, the Home Office funded a national victimisation survey which was originally known as the British Crime Survey, with the purpose of interviewing a representative sample of the population about their experiences of crime and victimisation in the last 12 months. Since 2011/12, it is now known as the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) as Scotland and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We can all agree that we should avoid certain forms of violent behavior if possible; however, it is incorrect to assume that all forms of violence is bad. In his article Violent Media is Good For Kids , Gerald Jones argues that creative violence such as gory video games, Comic books, and play fighting give children tools to master rage and actually help more kids than they hurt. What the author is saying here is correct because children use these types of influences in imaginary play at a young age, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the Incredible Hulk was a ticking time bomb and completely out of control he was a sort of Jekel and Mr. Hyde character. Timid geek, gone raging goliath if you must. Yes, he was out of control and frightened tearing up everything in his path, but on the other side of that, he was also a caring good hearted person that got a good enough handle on his destructive side that he became a hero and started working with the Avengers. Jones is wrong to imply that the only reason these comics were good for him was due to the violence alone. This was not a character like the Joker who just tortured and corrupted people for a laugh and killed mercilessly, there is a reason the good guy always wins in these comics, and that is to appeal to the children reading them and to instill that type of behavior. Everybody loves a winner so when they make Batman or Superman triumph over The Joker or Lex Luthor the authors are instilling the value that good triumphs over evil to their audience. This means that while yes, they were good for him because they were violent and juvenile; they were also good because they still had those messages of conquering the demon, or lose yourself but find yourself again. Jones goes on to persuade us by using his son as an example. • 17. Seeking a Just Judiciary In recent years, many people in the United States have acquired an oddly tilted concept of how the judicial branch of government should function. Modern consensus postulates that the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of the Constitution, and that its judgments cannot be challenged or changed except through its own decision (Vieira). Curiously, however, this idea of giving the power of final constitutional interpretation to the judiciary known in law as judicial supremacy finds no basis in the text of the Constitution itself or in historical opinion. This doctrine is a modern construction, and it poses an unhappily real threat to individual liberties in America. The people of our nation deserve a judiciary that is just in its... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While one may contend that there were relatively few judicial power grabs during the lifetimes of these two presidents, there is a disturbing new legal model that extends the power of the Supreme Court far beyond its traditional authority of constitutional arbitration. In 1965, a landmark case known as Griswold v. Connecticut came before the Supreme Court. The ruling was, as usual, long and technical, but the legal precedent upon which the Court based its holding had many lawyers scratching their heads and reaching for their dictionaries. The Court confidently stated that their holding was based upon the right to privacy , which the justices had managed to locate in a penumbra, formed by emanations from [the Bill of Rights] (Griswold). The word penumbra, which is used four times in this particular ruling, is not often heard in the field of law, and for good reason. Of all things, it is a Latin astronomical term that roughly translates to secondary shadow . Essentially, the 1965 Court was calling the enumerated rights the umbra, or primary shadow, while claiming that there was a separate set of unenumerated rights found in the penumbra (Griswold v. Connecticut). This idea of a constitutional penumbra, which was never suggested before the ruling in Griswold, allows the Supreme Court to invent entirely new rights and constitutional statutes, an ability that extends its powers into ... • 18. The Problem Of Environmental Racism In this paper, we are going to provide a quick overview of what environmental justice is and when this phenomenon started to then analyze the dilemma of environmental racism in minorities neighborhoods. At the same time we will try to present some solutions to the matter as well as explain if we believe that this kind of social race problem could be addressed in a near future or it will be ignored and forgotten by the new generations. The environmental justicemovement is tightly related to the Civil Rights act created in 1964 and the work of Dr. Martin Luther King. Many believe that the real origin of the movement was in Warren County, North Carolina when residents protested about a landfill placed in their county causing some serious environmental pollution. After this event, communities around the country mainly low income, reported similar impacts in their neighborhood and land, making everyone aware of a new wave of racial discrimination, reason enough to get the attention of human rightsactivists who promptly took action and a new political agenda was created. The environmental movement main purpose is to seek change in the abuse of decisions made by people in power to the disproportional exposure of color people and other racial minorities to polluted air, soil and water causing long term health effects by allowing the construction of waste or nuclear facilities in the same segregated area were poor people are located. • 23. Factors Affecting The Earth s Surface Systems Undergo A... Introduction. Over the past century there have been rapid and noticeable changes in environmental conditions on Earth. These changes can be traced in various geospheres: alterations of the gaseous composition of the atmosphere, major decreases in global ice volume (Cryosphere), in both: land and water based glaciers with consequent rise of sea level (Hydrosphere), increase in the frequency and severity of geohazards (Lithosphere) etc. Triggering mechanisms for those changes include both: natural fluctuations of environmental processes brought about by heliophysical, cosmophysical and tectonic factors as well as rapidly increasing contribution coming from human anthropogenic activities via alterations of natural biogeochemical cycles. Geochemical weathering. The Earth s surface systems undergo a series of complex interactions involving exchanges between various geospheres within the Earth s system (the atmosphere, biosphere, lithosphere and the hydrosphere) and outside of it (helio and cosmophysical factors), through matter and energy exchanges. Despite the fact that overall understanding about the majority of these processes and their involvement in these interactions exists (even though rather incomplete), their quantification and the identification on the spatial and temporal scales remain central problems for the Earth Science community (Moquet, 2011). One of the more important ones involves quantifying the role of geochemical weathering in the carbon (C) cycle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The contrasts between East and West, East Egg and West Egg, and the two Eggs and New York serve important thematic roles and provide the backdrops for the main conflict. Yet, there needs to be a middle ground between each of these sites, a buffer zone, as it were; there is the great distance that separates East from West; there is the bay that separates East Egg from West Egg; and, there is the Valleyof Ashes that separates Long Island from New York. (23) The ash heaps, then, are piles of garbage, and the repeated references to waste land, as opposed to wasteland, now make more sense, as does George Wilson s use of a piece of waste to wipe his hands. (24 5) For Fitzgerald, the American dream is to get rich and become socially acceptable; Wilson, who has failed, has wasted his life, and is now down in the dumps. He has been cast away by society, just like the rest of the refuse that surrounds him. This, then, seems to be the fate of middle class dreams despite being conceived in a land filled with opportunity, they all end up in the landfill. Yet, there are still inconsistencies with this interpretation, which also apply to the stricter literal view; where does the gray, scrawny Italian child down the road by the railroad tracks come from? (26) Where do the workmen come from? (137) If the valley is so isolated and desolate how could Nick even imagine there would be an old man regaling little boys with the story of Myrtle s death? Without any measures of the sizes of and distances to any celestial objects, Aristarchus was able to measure both for the Moon. He was able to use something he knew about the Earth and a bit of smart geometry to deduce the size of the Earths shadow at the distance of the Moon. By watching the Moon go through the Earth s shadow which is formally known as a lunar eclipse, Aristarchus could determine the ratio between the size of the shadow at the distance to the Moon and the size of the Moon. Aristarchus knew that on average two times a year, the surface of the full Moon becomes dark for a period ranging up to around two hours. It was reasoned that during these times, the Moon was passing through the shadow cast by the Earth, known as a lunar eclipse. The eclipse would only occur during the full Moon because that s the time when the Moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. Aristarchus realized that the longest lunar eclipses must occur when the Moon passes right through the center of the Earth s shadow, and so that the angular size of the Earth s shadow could be measured by noting the difference in the position of the Moon before and after the eclipse. He could then compare this angular size to the angular size of the Moon to get the ratio between them. He used the formula Now by using the formula. The moon could fit into earth roughly ... Mutations in the CFTR results in protein misfolding, causing a defect in cellular processing and trafficking that targets the protein for degradation and reduces the quantity of CFTR at the cellsurface [56]. In order for the CFTR to function correctly, then it must be synthesized, folded, and transported to the apical membrane of the cell without problem. The CFTR passes through quality control systems to get rid of misfolded proteins that would not function properly or that could become damaged [16]. It is apparent that only 33% of CFTR folds correctly and is allowed to leave the endoplasmic reticulum[8]. The nucleus is the site... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One system detects defects in the cytosolic parts of the CFTR while the other detects defects within the endoplasmic reticulum membrane. It is apparent that ubiquitylating proteins work with specific factors in order to detect misfolding. For example, Hsp70 detects mutations in the cytosolic regions of the CFTR. It is suspected that Hsp70 keeps the CFTR soluble until the E3 ligase CHIP binds with it. The complex that forms between these two redirects the CFTR to the degradation pathway. Derlin 1 is involved with detecting defects in the endoplasmic reticulum membrane and is involved in the retro translocation of CFTR from the endoplasmic reticulum so that it can be send to the proteasome for degradation [20]. If the CFTR protein is folded correctly within the endoplasmic reticulum, then it is sent to the Golgi apparatus. The coat protein complex II (COPII), which is found within the ER membrane, helps to maintain the correct CFTR structure and location, conformation, and protein protein interactions as this occurs. Final processing for the CFTR is carried out within the Golgi, as the CFTR replaces a mannose enriched side chain with a mature complex oligosaccharide side chain. Humans didn t always have carbon dating and archaeology to find answers about their past, so they had to draw their own conclusions based off of their own lifestyles. So back to the earlier question, what was in the beginning? According to the Mayans Popol Vuh, there was nothing. Then the existing deities, Heart of Sky and the Plumed Serpent, joined together to give themselves the power to form the Earthfrom the water with their words. Heart of Sky met with the Plumed Serpent, and together they agreed on the creation of man, who would maintain the Earth and worship them. So they created animals, and made them the guardians of the forest. However, when the creators ordered the animals to speak, they could only screech and howl. Frustrated, the gods allowed them to remain guardians of the forest, but decreed that they should be eaten. After this attempt, four sub deities, the Modeler, the Maker, the Begetter, and the Bearer, attempt to make humanity out of clay. However, this creation, while being humanoid, cannot sustain itself and crumbles and falls apart. • 48. Similarities Between Animal Farm And The Truman Show How can achieve the good life? How can we make make a utopia? These are some of the questions when a human gets enough power and control! Within both of the stories, Animal Farm (written by George Orwell) and The Truman Show (directed by Peter Weir). Both author and director explore these three themes . The good life, a utopia and power are some of the keys to living a full and grateful life. To have a utopia you must have a good life and to have a good life you must have power within your life. In the movie The Truman Show Peter Weirshows that power is to control another person s life in one way or another. Whereas in animal farm to have power is to control. The main point can be shown within christof who is the director of the show who controls where truman worked, where he lived and even who he marries. Christof has ultimate power over truman and whatever he does until Truman finds his own freedom within the set, this was shown in one of the end scenes when Christof makes the weather horrible so truman couldn t escape from the dome. This shows that Christof had the most power because he could control another person s life and what they did. Similarly in animal farm power is shown in control and that to have power you have to control over a group, this is shown at the start when farmer jones is in control of all of the animals on the farm and then when the pigs take over to controll all of the other animals. These were shown when the pigs had to have a farm vote to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Also, the central idea of revenge in the poem opposes the ideas of Christianity. The poem also contains many breaches of the Ten Commandments, which prove that the story is not Christian. Although all of these are important pagan symbols that lead us to believe that this poem is not Christian, probably the most significant pagan symbol is that of fate. The idea of fate ruled the lives of the pagans. Their belief was that you were born with a fate, and there was nothing that could change this destiny. This idea becomes apparent in Beowulf several times. As Beowulf is dying he refers to his leaving this earth as just part of his destiny when he says that [m]y days have gone by as fate willed (Norton 1604). The idea of fate is called on again when Beowulf asks Wiglaf to succeed him as king of the Geats. He tells Wiglaf that he would have given the honor to his son, if he had one, but fate did not allow it. We see a reference to fate a final time when Wiglaf speaks of Beowulf after his death. He offers that as much as Beowulf s people tried to convince him to leave well enough alone, to allow the monster to live on forever, there was no changing Beowulf s destiny. Beowulf s [f]ate, and his will, [w]ere too strong (Norton 1611). Fate is clearly a non Christian idea, and its presence in the poem helps the case for Beowulf being a pagan story.
