3. What is ATEX?
EXplosive ATmosphere = ATEX
An explosive atmosphere is a mixture of air and flammable substance
as gas, vapour or dust under atmospheric conditions that can explode.

4. Which industries requires ATEX products?
Any industry, due to the process, could give rise to flammable
substance (gas, vapour, mist, liquid, dust, small fibres) and could
generate an explosive atmosphere.
Examples of industries:
• Printing machinery
• Painting gantry applications
• Painting robot applications
• Volumetric pump for Oil & gas, chemical and petro-chemical industries
• Actuator for valve in Energy applications (biogas generation, gas turbine
equipment)
• Filling / dosing machine for alcohol, floor or powder in food and
pharmaceutical industries

5. What is an explosion?
For an explosion to occur, three
conditions must be fulfilled:
1. Fuel*
2. Oxygen
3. Source of ignition
If one of these three conditions is
removed, the explosion cannot occur.

The EX, EY servo motors are designed to follow the European ATEX
regulation based on 2 directives:
• 1999/92/EC: Rules for workers safety and zoning classification (under
responsibility of the customer)
• 2014/34/EU. Rules to design the devices (under responsibility of
manufacturer)
• EX servo motors: ATEX, IECEx certified, UL for US in accordance with
the UL674, Kosha and CCC
• EY servo motors: ATEX

CCC: "CCC" motors have exactly the same construction as IECEx motors
(with the exception of a specific nameplate).
They are intended for use in the same areas (gas or dust) and have the same
degree of safety. Refer to standards GB3836.1-2010, GB3836.2-2010,
GB12476.1-2013, GB12476.5-2013 for more details.

Flameproof Protection for EX motor
Ex db for Gas - Zone 1 or 2 and tb / tc for Dust - Zone 21 or 22:
• It is assumed that the surrounding explosive atmosphere can enter the
enclosure and that there will be internal explosions during the life of the
equipment.
• The enclosure therefore has to be strong enough not to fracture or distort
under the internal pressures generated.
• Contains explosions and prevents propagation.
