What Does It All Mean?
Intrinsically safe is used to describe products that
are destined for an explosive area.
■ It is a protection concept that is based around limiting the
available electrical energy to nonincendive levels (i.e.,
sparks cannot occur from short circuit or failures that
could cause an explosive atmosphere to ignite).
■ Products bearing marks have been tested to meet certain
standards & production sites have been audited to meet

7. Application Example
Hot Gas Defrost Refrigeration Systems
Food & Beverage manufacturing requires the use of complex refrigeration.
Pressures and temperatures inside evaporator piping will vary significantly
from one phase of defrost to the next.
Under these changing conditions pressure shocks can occur, causing
gradual or sudden damage to components and piping.
