Experiential Learning Reflection
Introduction
In today's competitive world, people are expected to be highly effective and efficient. They need
specific skills and knowledge for their education or work purposes. This has enforced various skill
enhancement programs proposed by fraternity all over the world.
Experiential learning and reflective practice is a compelling approach for self–improvement by
regular self–audit. The following report is an academic character with various definitions, analysis
and critique of reflective learning structure. It shall then emphasize on my career, experiences, and
analysis which will help in developing my overall personality. It shall focus on analysis of skills in
effective managers and leaders.
The evaluation from four diagnostic tools shall help in understanding my strengths and weaknesses
and development areas. Action plan concludes the whole trial in which my analysis and approach is
highlighted in relation to need for self–improvement.
Experiential Learning and Reflective Practice
Do we always learn from experiences?
The answer is NO. 'Nothing will become real unless experienced' said John Keats (as cited in Beard
and Wilson, 2013, p. 28). We cannot learn from experiences until reflecting over it. To understand
reflecting over experiences, it is important to understand experiential learning first.
"Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience"
said David A. Kolb (1984, p.38).

Experiential Learning Theory : Carl Rogers's Approach To...
Experiential Learning is the art of learning from one's own physical experiences in real life. The
theory was developed by a man named Carl Rogers. The Experiential Learning theory originates
from his views about psychotherapy and humanistic approach to psychology. He believes that
Experiential Learning is equivalent to personal change and growth. He feels the all humans have a
natural tendency to learn.
Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois. His father was a civil engineer and his
mother was a house wife. He started school in the second grade because he could already read. His
wife's name was Helen Elliot. He taught at the university of Chicago and Wisconsin at Madison. He

Having a fair atmosphere puts many students at ease and make's them feel more confident in the
classroom. Learning is easier when the learner completely participates and self–evaluates the work
that has been put in front of them.
Experiential Learning was one of the first methods of education. It has been said that it is an
important part of formal college education. It has many reasons why, one of many is the concern
with instructors helping their students enter the profession they wish too due to the never–ending
competition. Experiential learning activities help education placements, and projects that have hands
on experience that prepares them for the real world. The activities provide growing numbers of
learners with many beneficial occasions to implement the theory in real world. These opportunities
let learners build skill and gain job expertise. There are also many challenges.
As there are many advantages to Experiential Learning there are also many challenges and
disadvantages to the theory. Such as learning style diversity, writing and speaking skills, plagiarism
and group writing, and classroom management. There could be many other things to make a student
nervous in a classroom like a missing assignment or they forgot to study for a test. It can be very
hard for the instructor to make all students at ease if the students do not be actively involved in the

Dr. Faustus And Twelfth Night : Experiential Learning
Dr. Faustus and Twelfth Night: Experiential Learning
Henry Perkinson, a former educational history and educational theorist professor at NYU, wrote it in
his book Learning from our mistakes "learning takes place not only in success, but in failure as
well" (23). Perkinson's perspective of education, that education comes from personal experience and
academic knowledge, can be used to view Thomas Marlowe's Dr. Faustus and William
Shakespeare's Twelfth Night differently. Both stories have characters that have experienced
traditional education, but in both plays the characters obtain true knowledge through revelations,
which they receive after their first hand experiences. For Faustus, it is his attempt to gain fame
through "necromancy" (Greenblatt 1129.25) that provides a revelation about good and evil during
his final moments. For the characters of Twelfth Night, Viola's disguise and secrets are the triggers
for their individual revelations about human interaction and love. In both plays it appears that when
characters try to defy pre existing social norms they experience greater knowledge through their
experience rather than their academic knowledge. While both of the plays focus on experiential
learning, both Dr. Faustus and Twelfth Night do highlight on moments of traditional academic
learning. For example in Dr. Faustus his interest in necromancy only happens after he was "swollen
with [knowledge], of a self–conceit" (Greenblatt 1129.20). Faustus has achieved a great

Importance Of Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a process through which students practice skills, obtain knowledge, and
derive values from real–life situations. There are different methods of this type of learning
including: field trips, internships, field research, and service learning projects. These assignments
and activities give students the opportunity to experience reflective, data–driven, and problem
solving scenarios. According to David Kolb's theory on experiential learning, " Learning is the
process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984,
p.38). His theory includes experience, perception, cognition, and behavior. This type of learning is
important for business students, university programs, and students to participate in.
There are several reasons that business students should learn experientially. This method accelerates
learning by using critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. Also, students are
more engaged because the focus is on collaboration with other students. When the student is
learning by doing, the student gets a first hand experience of what has been taught in the classroom.
There are different strategies and methods to improve classes so students can be taught in this way.
Including: group projects, brainstorming, getting involved in the classroom, sharing ideas, and being
open to new learning opportunities. In this way, it is different from traditional learning methods and

The Importance Of Experiential Learning
Experiential learning is a unique form of learning that allows you to learn through first–hand
experience outside of the classroom using skills, knowledge, and experience. It can happen through
internships, studies abroad, field trips and research, and service learning projects. This type of
learning is when a student can apply their own knowledge to real–world problems rather than a
made–up problem by a teacher. David A. Kolb made this concept popular by stating that its base on
learning which is a process where knowledge is created through transforming experiences. It has a
cycle that does more than just learning it, it allows you to experience it, then reflect it, then
conceptualize it, and then experiment. Experiential learning is important for business students to
learn experientially because of all the elements that are taught doing the task. The reflection,
conceptualize, and experiment allows students to further engage in various different way such as
creatively, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. This creates students to become more
motivated to learn. This motivation to learn is then reflected in how they apply the content to
experiential learning and gives them opportunities. The reflection that the business students have
after experiential learned helps better prepared them for the future. The reflections create deeper
learning that can help at internships or work because they'll be better and more important when the
students are prepared and

Understanding The Experiential Learning Process
Reflection is the method of analysing an activity with a view of changing an existing approach or
adopting a new perspective on an experience (Nguyen et al 2014). Boyd and Fales (1983) state "that
this process is central to understanding the experiential learning process". According to Trottier
(2015) Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is the process of an organisation gathering and analysing
information that is available to anyone. Websites and applications dedicated to Social media is one
of the most popular in OSINT for information generation and wide spread dissemination; security
and intelligence agencies can capitalise on these opportunities to covertly study, things such as
terrorist group behaviour, cultural contexts and recruiting platforms (Zeng et al, 2010). The British
Army employs small investigative teams that conduct an OSINT capability to deliver a similar
effect. The British Army state that learning lessons is important and that all members of the armed
forces need to be involved in order to transform the field army of the future (British Army, 2016). Its
overarching learning processes are a holistic organisational view at the macro level with long term
objectives; there is no evidence that prescripts how the smaller capabilities, such as OSINT, should
learn, adapt and progress in order to advance in their specific contexts. This essay will look at how
important active reflection is to self–develop and continually improve the OSINT capability in line

Kolb 's Cycle Of Experiential Learning
Kolb's Cycle of Experiential Learning
I have always believed that we learn by our own experiences. I think that this belief that I have lived
by is why I was so intrigued by this particular learning theory. I will be discussing Kolb's Cycle of
Experiential Learning. I will explain the definition of this particular type of learning style and how it
explains how as an individual one learns. I will be describing the four different stages of Kolb's
learning cycle and Kolb's four different learning styles. I will also discuss how this learning style
will essentially help me with lifelong learning beyond my BAAS degree in a personal and
professional manner.
David Kolb is an educational theorist that helped develop the Experiential Learning Model in the
early 1970's it was then published in 1984. The basic assumption for Kolb's cycle is that this type of
learning is built on the idea that a person's preference of learning can be described with two different
levels: a four stage cycle of learning and four types of learning styles. He defines that learners
experience a cycle of experiences, these experiences then lead to reflections, and we then take these
experiences and build upon them to create new experiences. In Kolb's Cycle of Experiential
Learning theory he states "Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the
transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). What I enjoyed about Kolb's Cycle of
Experiential Learning method is that not only does it let one

David Kolb 's Framework Of Experiential Learning
A big proponent of ESL learning, what my case study consists of, can be compared to David Kolb's
framework of experiential learning. Kolb's experiential learning cycle features four stages: the
concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation.
The first stage, concrete experience, involves doing or having an experience. The second stage,
reflective observation, involves reviewing or reflecting on the experience. The third stage, abstract
conceptualisation, involves concluding or learning from the experience. The fourth stage, active
experimentation, involves planning or trying out what you learned. ISLA, which stands for
Immersion for Spanish Language Acquisition, facilitates a supportive environment for Hispanic
children to learn and explore in Spanish. ISLA mission is to provide cost–free heritage language
classes, taught 100% in Spanish, include literacy, science, arts, and outdoor education, as well as
cultural programs to nurture each student's unique cultural heritage and multicultural experience.
This past year ISLA took 103 Latino students and their families on a 2–day immersive camping trip
to Morrow Mountain State Park, provided English classes for forty ISLA parents, and launched

Andragogy And Experiential Learning Paper
Introduction There are different theories that have been applied to understand and help adults learn
more effectively. Andragogy and experiential learning are being discussed individually in this paper
to capture the essence of each theory in being practiced and applied. Once an understanding is
obtained, I will then evaluate and try to apply these theories to my own life to help get the most out
of the time I have and college and the rest of my life.
Andragogy
Malcom Knowles theory, andragogy, as cited by Chan, (2010), has six components: "self–concept;
role of experience; readiness to learn; orientation to learning; internal motivation; and need to
know," (Chan, 2010, pp 27–28). These six components are applied when an adult seeks education.
There are many places and fields that this theory has been applied to help individuals beyond their
adolescent years succeed in their training and learning experience, (Chan, 2010). It has been
suggested that adults learn more effectively when they are given concise direction and still have the
freedom to apply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Oddly enough the thought has crossed my mind and the following thought was "well, it is not
required." I do think that no amount of money can be placed on an experience that one can apply to
their life. I believe opportunities like this can mold one into who God intends them to be. As I had a
chance to be interviewed recently, though I did not obtain the position, I was grateful to have
learned more about me by participating in the interview. I trust that God has my best interest in
mind. He will always prepare me for what He has in store by placing the opportunity in my journey.
It is only by being willing, honest, and open to these experiences that will make God's grace to work

Theories Of Experiential Learning Theory
Meanwhile, the Theory of Experiential Learning Cycle by David Kolb (Kolb, 1984) is also relevant
to this study. Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) defines learning as "the process whereby
knowledge is created through the transformation of experience". Knowledge is a product from the
combination of both grasping and transforming experience. According to him the Experiential
Learning Theory model portrays two dialectically related modes of grasping experience; Concrete
Experience and Abstract Conceptualization, and two dialectically relevant modes of transforming
experience; Reflective Observation and Active Experimentation. Experiential learning is a process
of formulating knowledge that involves a creative tension between the four learning modes that is
responsive to contextual demands. This process is portrayed as an ideal learning cycle or spiral
where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These modes are only responsive to certain contexts. Thus, the learning process is portrayed as a
learning cycle where the learner assumes each of the four domains; experiencing, reflecting,
thinking, and acting (Kolb & Kolb, 2005). The recursive process is responsive to each other; the
learner, learning experience, and on the content learned. Immediate or concrete experiences are the
impetus for observations and reflections. Without these learning would be impossible even at the
very beginning. Later on, reflections then can be assimilated in the old experience and deduced it
into abstract concepts from which new implications for action are drawn. These new implications
are then used for active experimentation, which leads to new concrete experiences (Kolb & Kolb,
2005). With the production of new concrete experiences it already leads us into a complete cycle of
learning under David Kolb's Experiential Learning

The Importance Of Education In Education
" Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life
believing that it is stupid" ( Einstein). Grading students based on subjects that they struggle in is like
judging a fish based on its ability to climb a tree: completely unfair. The American school system
has turned a blind eye to the millions of different personalities and talents that a student body has to
offer. Since the establishment of the American high school, students have been forced to be
scheduled in courses that they are not only struggling in, but are also forced to take classes that they
find entirely uninteresting. The American high school has failed many students who are not
academically inclined, and in order to establish success for everyone, the education system must be
reconstructed to include hands on experiences and functional skill instruction. In order to establish
success for every student, whether that be those who are academically minded, musically or
artistically gifted, or those who prefer sports or trade, the school system needs to make a transition
from liberal arts into experiential learning. According to the University of Colorado Denver, the
definition of this teaching method is "a process through which students develop knowledge, skills,
and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting" (The Regents of the
University of Colorado). With this transition, students will be able to reflect, analyze, and

Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory
Theoretical Frame Work
Kolb's experiential learning theory (learning styles) Experiential learning theory provides a holistic
model of the learning process and a multilinear model of the learning process and a multilinear
model of adult development, both of which are consistent with what we know about how people
grow ,learn and develop .The theory is called experiential learning to emphasize the central role that
experience plays in the learning process. The theory suggests that learning requires abilities that are
polar opposites, and that the learner must continually choose which set of learning abilities he or she
will use in a specific learning situation. In grasping experience some of us perceive new information

After a series of direct instruction on this concept the students were given their post–one test. This
was given the day before having the opportunity to explore the ecosystem outside. They were given
the exact same assessment requirements. The next step to this research was giving the students the
chance to explore the taiga in a hands–on experiential setting. The students were taken to Donner
State Park, where they were to complete a scavenger hunt of finding, touching, seeing and feeling
animals, plants and non–living organisms. They also had the opportunity to examine pelts and see a
variety of taxidermy animal species at the museum provided in the park. After this experience the
students were then asked to take a post–two assessment. This assessment was the exact same
assessment as the two given prior. The students were asked to draw and label a taiga ecosystem
including five animals, five plants and five non–living organisms. This type of data collection is an
open–ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is open–ended because the students were not given
specific organisms that they had to draw and label so the answers can vary. This type of data is
justifiable because it is aligned with the NGSS standard 2–LS4–1 (NGSS 2013). This standard states
that students will make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in
different habitats. If students have proven to make

CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction "Knowledge results from
the combination of grasping (observation) and transforming reflections into action (concrete
experience)" (Kolb, 1894). Nursing is a practice profession. Clinical experience in the clinical
setting is the integral part of the total education process for nursing students. (Estrella Cuarezma
Sanchez, 1998) The clinical exposure of a student nurse is an experience that is not to be taken for
granted. It is as important (if not more so) than the classroom lectures. In the field, the student nurse
is allowed to experience dealing with actual patients and witnessing medical cases first hand. That is
the reason why it is imperative that the student nurse make the ... Show more content on

Sheth (2008) sighted that private hospitals possesses centralized care. Therefore, student nurses are
exposed to a conducive learning brought by ideal nursing practice exhibited in the health care
setting. In the said type of hospital, Colladilla and Argos (2000) claimed more opportunities
available both professionally and personally for its staff. Thus, student nurses in return could profit
from it. Also, these hospitals are equipped with well maintained facilities, highly technologic
equipment and complete medical supplies. (Johns, 2000) Thus, familiarization begins and would
further evolve to learning. Adequate manpower plus limited handled patients could provide a
centralized care. However, there are also disadvantages. Limited assignments are given to student
nurses because they make sure they give quality care to patients due to patient's payment for
services rendered. There are strict norms associated with providing health care interventions.
Herewith, staffs nurses have significant liability to their patients. They can not afford to make
mistakes. That is why, unlike in public hospitals, students learn more through observation of the
different procedures done in the hospital. Public hospital provides culturally competent care

It is a widely acknowledged fact in the industry that the organization will lose money on its
employee for the first one to two years, if the employee has no previous experience.
The Experiential Learning Cycle The first part of the five part experiential learning cycle is the
experiencing (Evans, 2006). The first part of this plan would be to have the student observe the
equipment being operated by experience operators. Sometimes it is helpful to have them observe
and interact with operators for an eight hour shift so they can get an idea of the job being done. One
of the issues teachers run into with adult students associated with this learning style is scheduling
conflict, however because the student is an employee this is not an issue; the student will be paid to
observe in this situation (Answers Corporation, 2013). The next aspect of this would be to let the
student actually operate a piece of equipment and allow them see how the controls are laid out and
what the controls do. This will enable them to have a better understand of how to move the
equipment and ultimately the dirt. The second part to the experiential learning cycle is the sharing of
observations (Evans, 2006). This is a critical aspect when teaching someone how to operate a 35,000
pound machine. It is imperative for someone to be comfortable with operating a big machine and by
sharing their observations or concerns. This will enable management to have a enhanced

Summary Of Experiential Learning
In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by
David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through
their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the
ideas of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory.
Kolb's theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the
information. Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb's believe the learning
process occurs. The first one he calls "concrete experience", in which one actually does the learning
right then and now. The second one is "reflective observation" when the learner thinks about what
they did as a reflection of the experience. The next step is the "abstract conceptualization", where
the learner makes a generalization of the experience. The last step is "active experimentation",
where the learner puts to practice his/her understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by
taking all the first three steps of the learning cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a
process in which individuals learn through trial and error. This process can then be reused with our
prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way
we process information cognitively. This is how I understood of the reading on Kolb's Experiential
Learning Theory.

Example Of Experiential Learning
"For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them." ― Aristotle, The
Nicomachean Ethics. Experiential learning is more than watching a teacher in the classroom; it is
learning about the passion of education and how to provide students with the tools and inspiration
they need to excel. During my experiential learning, I was in three different classrooms:
kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Each classroom was arranged differently to
accommodate the students, the kindergarten classroom was arranged more like a Montessori
classroom with activities on shelves. The first grade classroom was traditional style with a large
carpet for whole group discussion and grouped desks for collaborative and individual work. The
second grade classroom was also traditional style with the addition of flexible seating, as well as a
large carpet for who group learning. In the kindergarten classroom, they focused on sight words and
forming sentences. The first grade classroom mainly consisted of learning about living things and
how animals use their structures to get food, as well as individual time for handwriting. The second
grade classroom worked mostly on the expanded form of numbers and finding more than one

David Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory Analysis
David Kolb's learning styles model was published in 1984. This was later used by him to develop
the experiential learning style inventory.
Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two levels. Level one consists of the four stage cycle of
learning, and level two consists of four separate learning styles. Most of Kolb's theory is concerned
with the learner's internal cognitive processes.
In Kolb's theory, the impetus for the development of new concepts is provided by new experiences.
The Experiential Learning Cycle
Kolb's experiential learning cycle is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle in which the
learner 'touches all the bases':
Figure 1 Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle
Given below is a description of all the four stages:
Concrete experience (Feeling): This stage deals with learning from specific experiences and relating
to people. This can include re–interpretation of existing experiences.

Learners with the accommodating learning style use the analysis of others, and prefer to have a
practical, experiential approach. They are attracted to new challenges and experiences, and carrying

others for information, rather than carrying out their own analysis. This learning style is prevalent
and useful in roles requiring action and initiative. People with an accommodating learning style

Philosophy Of Experiential Learning On The Contemporary...
To be successful in the contemporary business market, a candidate needs a repertoire of knowledge
forged equally from experience and from education. After earning my undergraduate degree, I
accepted a position with a private transportation firm and entered the workforce. My time working
as an administration manager exposed me to the demands of a fast–paced private market. I learned
to adapt quickly to meet the needs of my employer and the clients that my company served. Now it
is time to enhance my work experience with education. I decided to invest in an MSA/MBA to gain
the leadership and accounting theory necessary to achieve my goal of working in public accounting.
I believe that Northeastern's D'Armore–McKim School of Business will impart me with robust and
relevant skills, which, along with my work experience, will make me competitive in the current job
market.
I am drawn to Northeastern's philosophy of experiential learning. Hands–on practice is invaluable.
The three–month internship incorporated into the MSA/MBA program provides a student with the
opportunity to apply newly learned skills to real world situations. In addition, it allows an employer
to evaluate a student's potential as a permanent employee. During my internship, I hope to
demonstrate my worth to an employer and convert my internship into a permanent job.
I have set a goal to network with my peers in the program and to leave Northeastern not only with
two strong graduate degrees but also with a strong

The Guiding Pedagogy Of Experiential Learning
Guiding Pedagogy
Rooted within the coursework would be the guiding pedagogy of experiential learning. The course
was created to guide the learners through Kolb's phases of experiential learning and provide
techniques that allow for active engagement. In addition to the application of experiential learning,
the pedagogy of traditional subject matter theory was utilized. Subject matter theory emphasizes
course content, and that students learn by attending lectures, doing reading assignments, and
completing the required coursework (INSERT CITATION.) Another tool utilized was the use of
evidence based practice (EBP) articles as a compliment to each class. OT has identified EBP as key
factor for continued success in the ever changing medical environment (Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen,
2013). Medical based professions are constantly challenged on the efficacy of their billable services
(Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen, 2013). It is important to introduce EBP within the academic
curriculum to ensure future occupational therapists can integrate this specialized knowledge into
practice (Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen, 2013). Furthermore, the Accreditation Council for
Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) has created new standards that mandate the use of EBP
within OT coursework (DeAngelis, DiMarco & Toth–Cohen, 2013). It is important for students to
not only utilize evidence but also apply it to a clinical setting (DeAngelis et al., 2013). In the
beginning of the course, EBP articles

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Experiential Learning
IV – Limitations Although Roger's experiential learning theory has provided many examples of
advantages, there are some limitations that follow in his outlined theory. When discussing the
implications of experiential learning, we often wonder what the full meaning represents. "The main
problem about experience, a problem which precedes questions about how we can learn best from
experience, lies in a double unsaid: a silence about the implication of experience in language and a
silence about the implication of experiential learning in discourse" (Boud, Cohen & Walker, 1993, p.
169). This author explains that through the very subconscious thoughts, we often approach events
believing that they have to acquire a particular meaning. Sometimes ... Show more content on

Although this limitation can become a barrier for the experiential learning theory Rogers' developed,
it is possible for this to overcome this with patience. As the main purpose of this theory is to allow
personal growth within the student, we must note that personal growth appears differently for each
individual learner. The role of the facilitator is to help engage all types of students in self–motivated
learning to help them improve their overall growth from significant information.
V – Application Self–initiated learning is a key aspect of Rogers' beliefs for a lasting education. He
notes that when a student is fully engaged with the subject matter, they are more likely to retain the
significant information they have been taught. When developing a curricular activity to represent
Rogers' experiential learning theory, we must remember to assemble a curriculum where the student
can reflect on their work. As a secondary school art classroom focuses on work developed by the
student, the assignments are often structured with a curriculum created by the educator. Assignments
and art pieces are put in place to help the student learn the foundations of art and art history.
Although students create the art pieces, they are often confined to the outline created by the teacher.

Building And Evaluating Experiential Learning Mechanisms
Building and evaluating experiential learning mechanisms requires a deep understanding of not only
general learning theory, but also the principal ways in which material can be taught to students.
According to authors of Effective Instruction for Stem Disciplines: From Learning Theory to
College Teaching, there are numerous traditional learning methods that are important for our
background. The first, which they call study–based, is based on student focus on materials, without a
strong active component. For most students, especially those of younger ages, this likely occurs
most at home, where students independently study for traditional examinations. The second
traditional learning method, retrieval, they describe as the conversion of study–based learning into
an active learning method. Retrieval encourages students to practice accessing information–to make
it so regular–that using it in later informational synthesis is already simple. The third traditional
learning method, which they call schema–building, is learning based on situational practice,
ensuring that students can appropriate handle the real–life aspects and applications of a concept
(Mastascusa et al., 2011).
Unfortunately, these traditional methods of learning are not always indicative of modern, dynamic
education. More modern learning techniques provide students with a far more interactive
experience. In one such method, students combine the first and third aforementioned traditional
study methods. Students

Abstract Despite the increase in popularity of Outdoor management development courses, there is a
significant lack in proof of the effectiveness of an OMD. This paper looks at the various researches
that has been done in the field of OMD and identifies the expected outcomes of an OMD as personal
development, managerial development, team development and organizational development. It also
points out the various characteristics that is required for an OMD to be branded effective and have a

David Kolb's experiential learning model (1984) – one of the most commonly used models of
learning styles defines four stages in the learning cycle: concrete experience, observation and
reflection, the formation of abstract concepts and testing in new situations. Experiential learning
increases our reserve of reliable experiences that can help us adapt to any challenging situation we
come across. When attempting to learn through experience, we first have to have a concrete
experience of a scale such that it is brief enough to be analyzed in detail, contains enough detail to
draw learning from and has meaning for the group analyzing it. In an OMD, concrete experience is
provided through training exercises, outdoor adventure activities and team building games.
Processing experiential learning activities through group discussions and debriefing sessions help
learn from even seemingly mundane events.
Dainty and Lucas (1992) suggest that "...the outdoors provides one of the most powerful mediums
for the development of self and other awareness". The rationale offered is that; "An individual 's
behavior is often clearly visible during outdoor development programmes. It is impossible to hide
behind organizational and educational norms in an environment where these no longer exist".
Similar arguments are propounded by Long and Galagan (1984, 1987). Thus, the principle is that the
outdoors provide activities and/or environments devoid of traditional

Learning Theories Behind Experiential Learning
Introduction
Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is such a nature as to demand
thinking or the intentional noting of connections; learning results naturally. (Dewey, 1916, p. 160)
Throughout this assignment, I will explore the theory behind Experiential Learning, specifically
Kolb's learning cycle and how this learning theory can impact the adult learner. Additionally, I will
look at how I can include Experiential Learning strategy within the classroom, especially within the
Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Finally, I will discuss my personal learning experiences and the link
to Race's seven factors to underpinning successful learning and how they consolidate with
Experiential Learning (2010).
Kolb, (as cited by Marin, 2005, p. 855), defines learning as the process whereby knowledge is
created through the transformation of experience. Experiential Learning Theory is a constant
development of obtaining new knowledge and skills through the accomplishment of a task, and
assimilating these new skills with preceding experience resulting in a deeper level of knowledge and
understanding, this later part is achieved through reflection. Boreham (1987) draws significant
attention on reflection (as cited by Healey & Jenkins, 2000, p. 3) who suggest the term 'learning
from experience ' really means learning from reflection on experience."
Dewey suggest experiences must continuously occur in permanence with prior experiences in the

The Value Of Experiential Learning
The Value of Experiential Learning Adults seeking to complete their undergraduate or graduate
degrees bring a unique perspective to the college classroom – life experiences. For many adult
students' life experiences delayed the ability to attend college but valuable learning occurred by
having careers, raising families, and traveling. Schooling in the traditional sense is void of
knowledge unless academic teachings can be experienced and practiced in real–life (Carroll, 2015).
While not all life experiences can be classified as college–level learning, an adult brings a level of
maturity to their studies that are not often seen in the traditional college student. The value of
experiential learning can be quantified not only in the adult learner but also in those that choose a
second career in teaching. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported an increase of
adults enrolling in postsecondary degree programs occurred over a ten–year period from 1980 to
1990. In 1980 students over the age of 25 accounted for 38 percent of the total enrollment while
traditional students made up 62 percent. In 1990 the younger population enrolling in colleges
dropped 6 percent while older students increased 6 percent. This trend has stayed static through
2015 and remains so through 2026 projections (NCES, 2015). Adults who reenter the college
classroom differ from their traditional student counterparts because adults juggle multiple life roles.

Two days later I called on the Vice President of Learning and Development for Orica, as soon as the
conversation began, my intent was building a relationship. I called the Vice President asking for an
appointment, with the intent of hearing his feedback on the work session along with giving a high
level view of who FranklinCovey is and potentially have a deeper dive in conversation if he felt it
was in alignment with Orica. I did not lead the conversation with what else I could offer Orica, but

Experiential Learning Exercise Analysis
Speaking of interactive exercises, Dr. Alt also prepares several experiential learning exercises that
really help you internalize the information you learn during lecture. Although it is embarrassing, I
must admit that I was a bit of an introvert that often found himself in awkward social situations that
were almost exclusively caused by a culture gap. I grew up in Korea and coming to the United
States was a bit of a culture shock for me. I quickly learned how different Western and Asian
cultures really were in terms of humor and etiquette. This is unquestionably the reason behind why,
of all the experiential learning exercises, the Cultural Awareness activity left the largest impact on
me.

own. In order to implement this change, I have decided to commit 1 hour of my daily life to go out

The second goal that I set for myself in the beginning of the semester was to develop effective

The Kolb Experiential Learning Theory (1984) Drives A Large
The Kolb Experiential Learning theory (1984) drives a large component of my instructional plans.
According to Kolb (1984), a person learns through experience and discovery. This theory is built
around a learning cycle that involves 4 principles: 1) concrete experience, 2) reflective experience,
3) abstract conceptualization, and 4) active experimentation. Educators initially provide learners
with opportunities to use concrete resources in learning about new concepts. Students then review
their learning and reflect on the experience. This is followed by the opportunity to form abstract
ideas using the new concepts and finally testing the concepts in new circumstances and situations.
The following is an example of my application of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In support of the Kolb learning cycle, I employ the principles of Mayer's Multimedia Cognitive
Theory (2014) and provide my students with a wide variety of resources that support the fourth
grade curriculum. According to Mayer (2015), students learn better with multimedia messages
designed to reflect the workings of the human mind. The theory is based on 3 principles: 1) we
receive messages best when they are delivered through two channels (audio/visual), 2) each of these
channels has a limited capacity for delivery, and 3) learning is a process that takes place through
filtering, organization, integration of knowledge based on prior knowledge.
Our school has a subscription to IXL, an online math program that provides extensive opportunities
for practice through effective and engaging audio–visual activities. Each student has an individual
account. The program follows Nova Scotia math outcomes and is divided by grade level and math
strand. I assign specific activities within the corresponding math strand. I am able to track student
achievement levels in successfully demonstrating understanding of determining area through this
program. IXL is an effective tool that provides the practice needed to enable students to move the
new math concept of determining area from reception through processing to long term memory.

Intelligent educational methods for experiential learning
I. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THEORY
1. BASIC CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES
In order to label the process of learning from experience, various terms have been used like
"learning by doing," (John Dewey) or "experienced–based learning." (Wolfe and Byrne). The
essence of experiential learning was defined by Rogers (1969, p. 5) as: "It has a quality of personal
involvement–the whole–person in both his feeling and cognitive aspects being in the learning
event." This definition represented the base on which Hoover made the point that experiential
learning involves not only the cognitive learning generally stressed by management education but
also the learning of behaviors: "Experiential learning exists when a personally responsible
participant cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally, processes knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes in
a learning situation characterized by a high level of active involvement." ... Show more content on

Experiential education first immerses learners in an experience and then encourages reflection about
the experience to develop new skills, new attitudes, or new ways of thinking."
The Association for Experiential Education regards experiential education as "a philosophy that
informs many methodologies, in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct
experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, clarify values, and
develop people's capacity to contribute to their communities." Experiential education is the term for
the philosophy and educational progressivism is the movement which it informed.
Built on social and constructivist theories of learning, experiential learning theories situate
experience at the core of the learning process in order to understand the manners in which these

Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning: Experiential learning is a process that basically demonstrates and focuses on
the role of experience in the learning process. This process has been explained by various theorists
who have developed some theories including Experiential Learning Theory, cognitive learning
theories, and Social Constructivist Theory. The Experiential Learning Theory offers a holistic model
of the process of learning and multi–linear form of adult development that shows the process with
which people learn, develop, and grow. On the contrary, cognitive theories of learning focus on the
impact of cognition rather than affect in learning. Similar to other constructivism approaches, Social
Constructivist Theory is based on the belief that a learner develops a personal understanding of
significant structures of meaning from his/her actions in the world through reflection.

Reflection Paper On Experiential Learning
Experiential Learning Reflection Paper
For my experiential learning project, I picked the option of conducting an informational interview
with a professor in the major I was interested in. I chose this option because it gave me the
opportunity to get relevant information about my major of interest from a professor who has
expertise in this career field. I thought that this option was best because the professor has more
information and knowledge compared to someone who is currently pursuing a degree in this major.
This project informed my major selection by helping me to realize that although Environmental
Studies is interesting, the classes are not. This major requires a lot of natural sciences, labs, and
math and I want a career where I can refrain from as much of this as possible. I found out that this
major involves more human interaction than I anticipated. This project changed my opinion about
Environmental Studies being suited for me instead it has helped me to cross Environmental Studies
off my list of possible majors. Although I'm no longer interested in Environmental Studies this
project has reinforced my desire to pursue working with animals. This major offers many career
opportunities that involve animals that are both domestic and exotic.
The results from my MBTI test fits perfectly with Environmental Studies. My introversion gives me

Importance Of Experiential Learning
Experiential learning as a creative approach to the modern curriculum is an effective tool in
engaging the children to become efficient learners. The process of learning through stimulated
experiences can be done both in and outside of schools, it is fun for the children that still meets
criteria of the curriculum, however it is the reflection on these experiences that give children a
deeper understanding and supports their future learning. 'When planned and implemented well,
learning outside the classroom contributed significantly to raising standards and improving pupils'
personal, social and emotional development.' (OFSTED, 2008) Through the first section of this

In Kolb's theory on the experiential learning cycle he states that "Learning is the process whereby
knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). He shows that
learning should obtain concepts that children can apply to different situations and lessons and that
their creation of these new concepts is created through new experiences.
However, despite Kolb's learning model being widely quoted in the development of a creative
curriculum it has also been critiqued for not being effective in education by being too narrow and
unable to facilitate other factors of a child's learning. "Several commentators suggest that the
learning styles are too simplistic and, whilst they fit neatly into Kolb's cycle, they fail to take
account of ways of learning other than experiential." (Forrest, 2004) Forrest explored in Train the
Trainer issue 12 that Kolb's model is an equal set of 4 learning stages, but it doesn't fit in with
'people's reality' and so his model only fits with his ideas and can't be applied to other learning tools
other than experiential. Earlier, in 2004, Chris Loynes similarly critiqued the model by

Kolb's Experiential Learning Model
KOLB – EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING MODEL
David Kolb is an American educational theorist whose main work was on experiential learning. He
published his learning styles model in 1984, which was later used by him to develop the
Experiential Learning Style Inventory.
Kolb's model works on two levels. Level one consists of the four stage cycle of learning, and level
two consists of four separate learning styles.
As per Kolb, new concepts of learning in children developed when they had new experiences.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CYCLE
Kolb's experiential learning cycle is based on four basic points. According to him, all learners go
through these stages in their learning process. The basic points are given in the table below– Figure

Experiential Learning Reflection

  • 1. Experiential Learning Reflection Introduction In today's competitive world, people are expected to be highly effective and efficient. They need specific skills and knowledge for their education or work purposes. This has enforced various skill enhancement programs proposed by fraternity all over the world. Experiential learning and reflective practice is a compelling approach for self–improvement by regular self–audit. The following report is an academic character with various definitions, analysis and critique of reflective learning structure. It shall then emphasize on my career, experiences, and analysis which will help in developing my overall personality. It shall focus on analysis of skills in effective managers and leaders. The evaluation from four diagnostic tools shall help in understanding my strengths and weaknesses and development areas. Action plan concludes the whole trial in which my analysis and approach is highlighted in relation to need for self–improvement. Experiential Learning and Reflective Practice Do we always learn from experiences? The answer is NO. 'Nothing will become real unless experienced' said John Keats (as cited in Beard and Wilson, 2013, p. 28). We cannot learn from experiences until reflecting over it. To understand reflecting over experiences, it is important to understand experiential learning first. "Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" said David A. Kolb (1984, p.38). "The ability to learn is a talent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Experiential Learning Theory : Carl Rogers's Approach To... Experiential Learning is the art of learning from one's own physical experiences in real life. The theory was developed by a man named Carl Rogers. The Experiential Learning theory originates from his views about psychotherapy and humanistic approach to psychology. He believes that Experiential Learning is equivalent to personal change and growth. He feels the all humans have a natural tendency to learn. Carl Rogers was born January 8, 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois. His father was a civil engineer and his mother was a house wife. He started school in the second grade because he could already read. His wife's name was Helen Elliot. He taught at the university of Chicago and Wisconsin at Madison. He founded psychotherapy and developed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having a fair atmosphere puts many students at ease and make's them feel more confident in the classroom. Learning is easier when the learner completely participates and self–evaluates the work that has been put in front of them. Experiential Learning was one of the first methods of education. It has been said that it is an important part of formal college education. It has many reasons why, one of many is the concern with instructors helping their students enter the profession they wish too due to the never–ending competition. Experiential learning activities help education placements, and projects that have hands on experience that prepares them for the real world. The activities provide growing numbers of learners with many beneficial occasions to implement the theory in real world. These opportunities let learners build skill and gain job expertise. There are also many challenges. As there are many advantages to Experiential Learning there are also many challenges and disadvantages to the theory. Such as learning style diversity, writing and speaking skills, plagiarism and group writing, and classroom management. There could be many other things to make a student nervous in a classroom like a missing assignment or they forgot to study for a test. It can be very hard for the instructor to make all students at ease if the students do not be actively involved in the Experiential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Dr. Faustus And Twelfth Night : Experiential Learning Dr. Faustus and Twelfth Night: Experiential Learning Henry Perkinson, a former educational history and educational theorist professor at NYU, wrote it in his book Learning from our mistakes "learning takes place not only in success, but in failure as well" (23). Perkinson's perspective of education, that education comes from personal experience and academic knowledge, can be used to view Thomas Marlowe's Dr. Faustus and William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night differently. Both stories have characters that have experienced traditional education, but in both plays the characters obtain true knowledge through revelations, which they receive after their first hand experiences. For Faustus, it is his attempt to gain fame through "necromancy" (Greenblatt 1129.25) that provides a revelation about good and evil during his final moments. For the characters of Twelfth Night, Viola's disguise and secrets are the triggers for their individual revelations about human interaction and love. In both plays it appears that when characters try to defy pre existing social norms they experience greater knowledge through their experience rather than their academic knowledge. While both of the plays focus on experiential learning, both Dr. Faustus and Twelfth Night do highlight on moments of traditional academic learning. For example in Dr. Faustus his interest in necromancy only happens after he was "swollen with [knowledge], of a self–conceit" (Greenblatt 1129.20). Faustus has achieved a great ... • 7. Importance Of Experiential Learning Experiential learning is a process through which students practice skills, obtain knowledge, and derive values from real–life situations. There are different methods of this type of learning including: field trips, internships, field research, and service learning projects. These assignments and activities give students the opportunity to experience reflective, data–driven, and problem solving scenarios. According to David Kolb's theory on experiential learning, " Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984, p.38). His theory includes experience, perception, cognition, and behavior. This type of learning is important for business students, university programs, and students to participate in. There are several reasons that business students should learn experientially. This method accelerates learning by using critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making skills. Also, students are more engaged because the focus is on collaboration with other students. When the student is learning by doing, the student gets a first hand experience of what has been taught in the classroom. There are different strategies and methods to improve classes so students can be taught in this way. Including: group projects, brainstorming, getting involved in the classroom, sharing ideas, and being open to new learning opportunities. In this way, it is different from traditional learning methods and takes the learning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Importance Of Experiential Learning Experiential learning is a unique form of learning that allows you to learn through first–hand experience outside of the classroom using skills, knowledge, and experience. It can happen through internships, studies abroad, field trips and research, and service learning projects. This type of learning is when a student can apply their own knowledge to real–world problems rather than a made–up problem by a teacher. David A. Kolb made this concept popular by stating that its base on learning which is a process where knowledge is created through transforming experiences. It has a cycle that does more than just learning it, it allows you to experience it, then reflect it, then conceptualize it, and then experiment. Experiential learning is important for business students to learn experientially because of all the elements that are taught doing the task. The reflection, conceptualize, and experiment allows students to further engage in various different way such as creatively, emotionally, intellectually, and physically. This creates students to become more motivated to learn. This motivation to learn is then reflected in how they apply the content to experiential learning and gives them opportunities. The reflection that the business students have after experiential learned helps better prepared them for the future. The reflections create deeper learning that can help at internships or work because they'll be better and more important when the students are prepared and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Understanding The Experiential Learning Process Reflection is the method of analysing an activity with a view of changing an existing approach or adopting a new perspective on an experience (Nguyen et al 2014). Boyd and Fales (1983) state "that this process is central to understanding the experiential learning process". According to Trottier (2015) Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) is the process of an organisation gathering and analysing information that is available to anyone. Websites and applications dedicated to Social media is one of the most popular in OSINT for information generation and wide spread dissemination; security and intelligence agencies can capitalise on these opportunities to covertly study, things such as terrorist group behaviour, cultural contexts and recruiting platforms (Zeng et al, 2010). The British Army employs small investigative teams that conduct an OSINT capability to deliver a similar effect. The British Army state that learning lessons is important and that all members of the armed forces need to be involved in order to transform the field army of the future (British Army, 2016). Its overarching learning processes are a holistic organisational view at the macro level with long term objectives; there is no evidence that prescripts how the smaller capabilities, such as OSINT, should learn, adapt and progress in order to advance in their specific contexts. This essay will look at how important active reflection is to self–develop and continually improve the OSINT capability in line with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Kolb 's Cycle Of Experiential Learning Kolb's Cycle of Experiential Learning I have always believed that we learn by our own experiences. I think that this belief that I have lived by is why I was so intrigued by this particular learning theory. I will be discussing Kolb's Cycle of Experiential Learning. I will explain the definition of this particular type of learning style and how it explains how as an individual one learns. I will be describing the four different stages of Kolb's learning cycle and Kolb's four different learning styles. I will also discuss how this learning style will essentially help me with lifelong learning beyond my BAAS degree in a personal and professional manner. David Kolb is an educational theorist that helped develop the Experiential Learning Model in the early 1970's it was then published in 1984. The basic assumption for Kolb's cycle is that this type of learning is built on the idea that a person's preference of learning can be described with two different levels: a four stage cycle of learning and four types of learning styles. He defines that learners experience a cycle of experiences, these experiences then lead to reflections, and we then take these experiences and build upon them to create new experiences. In Kolb's Cycle of Experiential Learning theory he states "Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). What I enjoyed about Kolb's Cycle of Experiential Learning method is that not only does it let one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. David Kolb 's Framework Of Experiential Learning A big proponent of ESL learning, what my case study consists of, can be compared to David Kolb's framework of experiential learning. Kolb's experiential learning cycle features four stages: the concrete experience, reflective observation, abstract conceptualisation, and active experimentation. The first stage, concrete experience, involves doing or having an experience. The second stage, reflective observation, involves reviewing or reflecting on the experience. The third stage, abstract conceptualisation, involves concluding or learning from the experience. The fourth stage, active experimentation, involves planning or trying out what you learned. ISLA, which stands for Immersion for Spanish Language Acquisition, facilitates a supportive environment for Hispanic children to learn and explore in Spanish. ISLA mission is to provide cost–free heritage language classes, taught 100% in Spanish, include literacy, science, arts, and outdoor education, as well as cultural programs to nurture each student's unique cultural heritage and multicultural experience. This past year ISLA took 103 Latino students and their families on a 2–day immersive camping trip to Morrow Mountain State Park, provided English classes for forty ISLA parents, and launched HUGS (Helping You Grow in Spanish) music and Spanish Immersion class for infants and toddler. I also would take various "adventures" into the forests that surrounded the ISLA camp. My case study consisted of children ranging from 5–13 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Andragogy And Experiential Learning Paper Introduction There are different theories that have been applied to understand and help adults learn more effectively. Andragogy and experiential learning are being discussed individually in this paper to capture the essence of each theory in being practiced and applied. Once an understanding is obtained, I will then evaluate and try to apply these theories to my own life to help get the most out of the time I have and college and the rest of my life. Andragogy Malcom Knowles theory, andragogy, as cited by Chan, (2010), has six components: "self–concept; role of experience; readiness to learn; orientation to learning; internal motivation; and need to know," (Chan, 2010, pp 27–28). These six components are applied when an adult seeks education. There are many places and fields that this theory has been applied to help individuals beyond their adolescent years succeed in their training and learning experience, (Chan, 2010). It has been suggested that adults learn more effectively when they are given concise direction and still have the freedom to apply ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This paper has motivated me to be more willing to take part in internships and job shadowing. Oddly enough the thought has crossed my mind and the following thought was "well, it is not required." I do think that no amount of money can be placed on an experience that one can apply to their life. I believe opportunities like this can mold one into who God intends them to be. As I had a chance to be interviewed recently, though I did not obtain the position, I was grateful to have learned more about me by participating in the interview. I trust that God has my best interest in mind. He will always prepare me for what He has in store by placing the opportunity in my journey. • 19. Theories Of Experiential Learning Theory Meanwhile, the Theory of Experiential Learning Cycle by David Kolb (Kolb, 1984) is also relevant to this study. Experiential Learning Theory (ELT) defines learning as "the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience". Knowledge is a product from the combination of both grasping and transforming experience. According to him the Experiential Learning Theory model portrays two dialectically related modes of grasping experience; Concrete Experience and Abstract Conceptualization, and two dialectically relevant modes of transforming experience; Reflective Observation and Active Experimentation. Experiential learning is a process of formulating knowledge that involves a creative tension between the four learning modes that is responsive to contextual demands. This process is portrayed as an ideal learning cycle or spiral where the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These modes are only responsive to certain contexts. Thus, the learning process is portrayed as a learning cycle where the learner assumes each of the four domains; experiencing, reflecting, thinking, and acting (Kolb & Kolb, 2005). The recursive process is responsive to each other; the learner, learning experience, and on the content learned. Immediate or concrete experiences are the impetus for observations and reflections. Without these learning would be impossible even at the very beginning. Later on, reflections then can be assimilated in the old experience and deduced it into abstract concepts from which new implications for action are drawn. These new implications are then used for active experimentation, which leads to new concrete experiences (Kolb & Kolb, 2005). With the production of new concrete experiences it already leads us into a complete cycle of learning under David Kolb's Experiential Learning ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. The Importance Of Education In Education " Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid" ( Einstein). Grading students based on subjects that they struggle in is like judging a fish based on its ability to climb a tree: completely unfair. The American school system has turned a blind eye to the millions of different personalities and talents that a student body has to offer. Since the establishment of the American high school, students have been forced to be scheduled in courses that they are not only struggling in, but are also forced to take classes that they find entirely uninteresting. The American high school has failed many students who are not academically inclined, and in order to establish success for everyone, the education system must be reconstructed to include hands on experiences and functional skill instruction. In order to establish success for every student, whether that be those who are academically minded, musically or artistically gifted, or those who prefer sports or trade, the school system needs to make a transition from liberal arts into experiential learning. According to the University of Colorado Denver, the definition of this teaching method is "a process through which students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting" (The Regents of the University of Colorado). With this transition, students will be able to reflect, analyze, and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory Theoretical Frame Work Kolb's experiential learning theory (learning styles) Experiential learning theory provides a holistic model of the learning process and a multilinear model of the learning process and a multilinear model of adult development, both of which are consistent with what we know about how people grow ,learn and develop .The theory is called experiential learning to emphasize the central role that experience plays in the learning process. The theory suggests that learning requires abilities that are polar opposites, and that the learner must continually choose which set of learning abilities he or she will use in a specific learning situation. In grasping experience some of us perceive new information through experiencing the ... This was given the day before having the opportunity to explore the ecosystem outside. They were given the exact same assessment requirements. The next step to this research was giving the students the chance to explore the taiga in a hands–on experiential setting. The students were taken to Donner State Park, where they were to complete a scavenger hunt of finding, touching, seeing and feeling animals, plants and non–living organisms. They also had the opportunity to examine pelts and see a variety of taxidermy animal species at the museum provided in the park. After this experience the students were then asked to take a post–two assessment. This assessment was the exact same assessment as the two given prior. The students were asked to draw and label a taiga ecosystem including five animals, five plants and five non–living organisms. This type of data collection is an open–ended questionnaire. The questionnaire is open–ended because the students were not given specific organisms that they had to draw and label so the answers can vary. This type of data is justifiable because it is aligned with the NGSS standard 2–LS4–1 (NGSS 2013). This standard states that students will make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats. If students have proven to make ... Experiential Learning CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction "Knowledge results from the combination of grasping (observation) and transforming reflections into action (concrete experience)" (Kolb, 1894). Nursing is a practice profession. Clinical experience in the clinical setting is the integral part of the total education process for nursing students. (Estrella Cuarezma Sanchez, 1998) The clinical exposure of a student nurse is an experience that is not to be taken for granted. It is as important (if not more so) than the classroom lectures. In the field, the student nurse is allowed to experience dealing with actual patients and witnessing medical cases first hand. Therefore, student nurses are exposed to a conducive learning brought by ideal nursing practice exhibited in the health care setting. Also, these hospitals are equipped with well maintained facilities, highly technologic equipment and complete medical supplies. (Johns, 2000) Thus, familiarization begins and would further evolve to learning. Adequate manpower plus limited handled patients could provide a centralized care. However, there are also disadvantages. Limited assignments are given to student nurses because they make sure they give quality care to patients due to patient's payment for services rendered. There are strict norms associated with providing health care interventions. Herewith, staffs nurses have significant liability to their patients. They can not afford to make mistakes. Confucius said "Tell me, and I will forget. The following essay will discuss how to utilize experiential learning in a heavy equipment construction company. It will illustrate how to facilitate student employee learning by doing. It is a widely acknowledged fact in the industry that the organization will lose money on its employee for the first one to two years, if the employee has no previous experience. The Experiential Learning Cycle The first part of the five part experiential learning cycle is the experiencing (Evans, 2006). The first part of this plan would be to have the student observe the equipment being operated by experience operators. Sometimes it is helpful to have them observe and interact with operators for an eight hour shift so they can get an idea of the job being done. One of the issues teachers run into with adult students associated with this learning style is scheduling conflict, however because the student is an employee this is not an issue; the student will be paid to observe in this situation (Answers Corporation, 2013). The next aspect of this would be to let the student actually operate a piece of equipment and allow them see how the controls are laid out and what the controls do. This will enable them to have a better understand of how to move the equipment and ultimately the dirt. The second part to the experiential learning cycle is the sharing of observations (Evans, 2006). This is a critical aspect when teaching someone how to operate a 35,000 pound machine. It is imperative for someone to be comfortable with operating a big machine and by sharing their observations or concerns. This will enable management to have a enhanced understanding as to what ... • 35. Summary Of Experiential Learning In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb's theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information. Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb's believe the learning process occurs. The first one he calls "concrete experience", in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The second one is "reflective observation" when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the experience. The next step is the "abstract conceptualization", where the learner makes a generalization of the experience. The last step is "active experimentation", where the learner puts to practice his/her understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. This is how I understood of the reading on Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Experiential learning is more than watching a teacher in the classroom; it is learning about the passion of education and how to provide students with the tools and inspiration they need to excel. During my experiential learning, I was in three different classrooms: kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. Each classroom was arranged differently to accommodate the students, the kindergarten classroom was arranged more like a Montessori classroom with activities on shelves. The first grade classroom was traditional style with a large carpet for whole group discussion and grouped desks for collaborative and individual work. The second grade classroom was also traditional style with the addition of flexible seating, as well as a large carpet for who group learning. • 43. David Kolb's Experiential Learning Theory Analysis David Kolb's learning styles model was published in 1984. This was later used by him to develop the experiential learning style inventory. Kolb's experiential learning theory works on two levels. Level one consists of the four stage cycle of learning, and level two consists of four separate learning styles. Most of Kolb's theory is concerned with the learner's internal cognitive processes. In Kolb's theory, the impetus for the development of new concepts is provided by new experiences. The Experiential Learning Cycle Kolb's experiential learning cycle is typically represented by a four stage learning cycle in which the learner 'touches all the bases': Figure 1 Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle Given below is a description of all the four stages: Concrete experience (Feeling): This stage deals with learning from specific experiences and relating to people. This can include re–interpretation of existing experiences. Reflective observation (Watching): In this stage, the learner observes before making a judgment by viewing the environment from different perspectives. The learner looks for the meaning of things. To be successful in the contemporary business market, a candidate needs a repertoire of knowledge forged equally from experience and from education. After earning my undergraduate degree, I accepted a position with a private transportation firm and entered the workforce. My time working as an administration manager exposed me to the demands of a fast–paced private market. I learned to adapt quickly to meet the needs of my employer and the clients that my company served. Now it is time to enhance my work experience with education. I decided to invest in an MSA/MBA to gain the leadership and accounting theory necessary to achieve my goal of working in public accounting. I believe that Northeastern's D'Armore–McKim School of Business will impart me with robust and relevant skills, which, along with my work experience, will make me competitive in the current job market. I am drawn to Northeastern's philosophy of experiential learning. Hands–on practice is invaluable. The course was created to guide the learners through Kolb's phases of experiential learning and provide techniques that allow for active engagement. In addition to the application of experiential learning, the pedagogy of traditional subject matter theory was utilized. Subject matter theory emphasizes course content, and that students learn by attending lectures, doing reading assignments, and completing the required coursework (INSERT CITATION.) Another tool utilized was the use of evidence based practice (EBP) articles as a compliment to each class. OT has identified EBP as key factor for continued success in the ever changing medical environment (Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen, 2013). Medical based professions are constantly challenged on the efficacy of their billable services (Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen, 2013). It is important to introduce EBP within the academic curriculum to ensure future occupational therapists can integrate this specialized knowledge into practice (Fleming–Castaldy & Gillen, 2013). Furthermore, the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) has created new standards that mandate the use of EBP within OT coursework (DeAngelis, DiMarco & Toth–Cohen, 2013). It is important for students to not only utilize evidence but also apply it to a clinical setting (DeAngelis et al., 2013). In the beginning of the course, EBP articles ... When discussing the implications of experiential learning, we often wonder what the full meaning represents. Building And Evaluating Experiential Learning Mechanisms Building and evaluating experiential learning mechanisms requires a deep understanding of not only general learning theory, but also the principal ways in which material can be taught to students. According to authors of Effective Instruction for Stem Disciplines: From Learning Theory to College Teaching, there are numerous traditional learning methods that are important for our background. The first, which they call study–based, is based on student focus on materials, without a strong active component. For most students, especially those of younger ages, this likely occurs most at home, where students independently study for traditional examinations. The second traditional learning method, retrieval, they describe as the conversion of study–based learning into an active learning method. Retrieval encourages students to practice accessing information–to make it so regular–that using it in later informational synthesis is already simple. The third traditional learning method, which they call schema–building, is learning based on situational practice, ensuring that students can appropriate handle the real–life aspects and applications of a concept (Mastascusa et al., 2011). Unfortunately, these traditional methods of learning are not always indicative of modern, dynamic education. More modern learning techniques provide students with a far more interactive experience. In one such method, students combine the first and third aforementioned traditional study methods. Students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

David Kolb's experiential learning model (1984) – one of the most commonly used models of learning styles defines four stages in the learning cycle: concrete experience, observation and reflection, the formation of abstract concepts and testing in new situations. Experiential learning increases our reserve of reliable experiences that can help us adapt to any challenging situation we come across. When attempting to learn through experience, we first have to have a concrete experience of a scale such that it is brief enough to be analyzed in detail, contains enough detail to draw learning from and has meaning for the group analyzing it. In an OMD, concrete experience is provided through training exercises, outdoor adventure activities and team building games. Processing experiential learning activities through group discussions and debriefing sessions help learn from even seemingly mundane events. Dainty and Lucas (1992) suggest that "...the outdoors provides one of the most powerful mediums for the development of self and other awareness". The rationale offered is that; "An individual 's behavior is often clearly visible during outdoor development programmes. It is impossible to hide behind organizational and educational norms in an environment where these no longer exist". Similar arguments are propounded by Long and Galagan (1984, 1987). Thus, the principle is that the outdoors provide activities and/or environments devoid of traditional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Learning Theories Behind Experiential Learning Introduction Give the pupils something to do, not something to learn; and the doing is such a nature as to demand thinking or the intentional noting of connections; learning results naturally. (Dewey, 1916, p. 160) Throughout this assignment, I will explore the theory behind Experiential Learning, specifically Kolb's learning cycle and how this learning theory can impact the adult learner. Additionally, I will look at how I can include Experiential Learning strategy within the classroom, especially within the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). Finally, I will discuss my personal learning experiences and the link to Race's seven factors to underpinning successful learning and how they consolidate with Experiential Learning (2010). Kolb, (as cited by Marin, 2005, p. 855), defines learning as the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience. Experiential Learning Theory is a constant development of obtaining new knowledge and skills through the accomplishment of a task, and assimilating these new skills with preceding experience resulting in a deeper level of knowledge and understanding, this later part is achieved through reflection. Boreham (1987) draws significant attention on reflection (as cited by Healey & Jenkins, 2000, p. 3) who suggest the term 'learning from experience ' really means learning from reflection on experience." • 57. The Value Of Experiential Learning The Value of Experiential Learning Adults seeking to complete their undergraduate or graduate degrees bring a unique perspective to the college classroom – life experiences. For many adult students' life experiences delayed the ability to attend college but valuable learning occurred by having careers, raising families, and traveling. Schooling in the traditional sense is void of knowledge unless academic teachings can be experienced and practiced in real–life (Carroll, 2015). While not all life experiences can be classified as college–level learning, an adult brings a level of maturity to their studies that are not often seen in the traditional college student. The value of experiential learning can be quantified not only in the adult learner but also in those that choose a second career in teaching. The National Center for Educational Statistics reported an increase of adults enrolling in postsecondary degree programs occurred over a ten–year period from 1980 to 1990. In 1980 students over the age of 25 accounted for 38 percent of the total enrollment while traditional students made up 62 percent. In 1990 the younger population enrolling in colleges dropped 6 percent while older students increased 6 percent. This trend has stayed static through 2015 and remains so through 2026 projections (NCES, 2015). Experiential Learning Exercise Analysis Speaking of interactive exercises, Dr. Alt also prepares several experiential learning exercises that really help you internalize the information you learn during lecture. Although it is embarrassing, I must admit that I was a bit of an introvert that often found himself in awkward social situations that were almost exclusively caused by a culture gap. I grew up in Korea and coming to the United States was a bit of a culture shock for me. I quickly learned how different Western and Asian cultures really were in terms of humor and etiquette. This is unquestionably the reason behind why, of all the experiential learning exercises, the Cultural Awareness activity left the largest impact on me. The Cultural Awareness activity helped me to realize ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I no longer feel offended or uncomfortable during the certain interactions with people of a different culture. I also intrinsically feel much better knowing that I am not alone in struggling with culture differences in everyday interactions. Nevertheless, I still feel like I can improve by taking a more hands–on effort to learn more about the Western culture and in order to successfully adapt it as my own. In order to implement this change, I have decided to commit 1 hour of my daily life to go out and interact with a friend who has grown up here and is fluent in the culture. The second goal that I set for myself in the beginning of the semester was to develop effective communication skills when working with a team of people. Prior to this class, I had worked on numerous group projects, but I always lacked the skills to effective communicate my ideas without seeing difficult to work with. This often lead to me being reviewed poorly by my fellow peers. When I came into this class I was placed in a permanent group in which I was to collaborate with three other members for both major ... • 68. The Kolb Experiential Learning Theory (1984) Drives A Large The Kolb Experiential Learning theory (1984) drives a large component of my instructional plans. According to Kolb (1984), a person learns through experience and discovery. This theory is built around a learning cycle that involves 4 principles: 1) concrete experience, 2) reflective experience, 3) abstract conceptualization, and 4) active experimentation. Educators initially provide learners with opportunities to use concrete resources in learning about new concepts. Students then review their learning and reflect on the experience. This is followed by the opportunity to form abstract ideas using the new concepts and finally testing the concepts in new circumstances and situations. The following is an example of my application of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In support of the Kolb learning cycle, I employ the principles of Mayer's Multimedia Cognitive Theory (2014) and provide my students with a wide variety of resources that support the fourth grade curriculum. According to Mayer (2015), students learn better with multimedia messages designed to reflect the workings of the human mind. The theory is based on 3 principles: 1) we receive messages best when they are delivered through two channels (audio/visual), 2) each of these channels has a limited capacity for delivery, and 3) learning is a process that takes place through filtering, organization, integration of knowledge based on prior knowledge. Our school has a subscription to IXL, an online math program that provides extensive opportunities for practice through effective and engaging audio–visual activities. Each student has an individual account. The program follows Nova Scotia math outcomes and is divided by grade level and math strand. I assign specific activities within the corresponding math strand. I am able to track student achievement levels in successfully demonstrating understanding of determining area through this program. IXL is an effective tool that provides the practice needed to enable students to move the new math concept of determining area from reception through processing to long term memory. I also use the constructivism model as an extension to determining the area of a rectangular surface. Through constructivism, students construct their ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 70. Examples Of Experiential Learning Intelligent educational methods for experiential learning I. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THEORY 1. BASIC CONCEPTS AND PRINCIPLES In order to label the process of learning from experience, various terms have been used like "learning by doing," (John Dewey) or "experienced–based learning." (Wolfe and Byrne). The essence of experiential learning was defined by Rogers (1969, p. 5) as: "It has a quality of personal involvement–the whole–person in both his feeling and cognitive aspects being in the learning event." This definition represented the base on which Hoover made the point that experiential learning involves not only the cognitive learning generally stressed by management education but also the learning of behaviors: "Experiential learning exists when a personally responsible participant cognitively, affectively, and behaviorally, processes knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes in a learning situation characterized by a high level of active involvement." ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Experiential education first immerses learners in an experience and then encourages reflection about the experience to develop new skills, new attitudes, or new ways of thinking." The Association for Experiential Education regards experiential education as "a philosophy that informs many methodologies, in which educators purposefully engage with learners in direct experience and focused reflection in order to increase knowledge, develop skills, clarify values, and develop people's capacity to contribute to their communities." Experiential education is the term for the philosophy and educational progressivism is the movement which it informed. Built on social and constructivist theories of learning, experiential learning theories situate experience at the core of the learning process in order to understand the manners in which these experiences motivate learners and promote their ... • 72. Experiential Learning Experiential Learning: Experiential learning is a process that basically demonstrates and focuses on the role of experience in the learning process. This process has been explained by various theorists who have developed some theories including Experiential Learning Theory, cognitive learning theories, and Social Constructivist Theory. The Experiential Learning Theory offers a holistic model of the process of learning and multi–linear form of adult development that shows the process with which people learn, develop, and grow. On the contrary, cognitive theories of learning focus on the impact of cognition rather than affect in learning. Similar to other constructivism approaches, Social Constructivist Theory is based on the belief that a learner develops a personal understanding of significant structures of meaning from his/her actions in the world through reflection. Forms of Learning as Head of Procurement Department: While procurement is one of the major ways with which an organization can lessen operations costs, a career in this field tends to be mentally challenging (Gaelebale, n.d.). Generally, procurement entails all purchasing activities and initiatives that are carried out on behalf of the organization or purchasing activities from business to business. As the head of a procurement department, some of the major responsibilities include compliance with policy, supervising procurement personnel, and coordinating all procurement activities. • 74. Reflection Paper On Experiential Learning Experiential Learning Reflection Paper For my experiential learning project, I picked the option of conducting an informational interview with a professor in the major I was interested in. I chose this option because it gave me the opportunity to get relevant information about my major of interest from a professor who has expertise in this career field. I thought that this option was best because the professor has more information and knowledge compared to someone who is currently pursuing a degree in this major. This project informed my major selection by helping me to realize that although Environmental Studies is interesting, the classes are not. This major requires a lot of natural sciences, labs, and math and I want a career where I can refrain from as much of this as possible. I found out that this major involves more human interaction than I anticipated. This project changed my opinion about Environmental Studies being suited for me instead it has helped me to cross Environmental Studies off my list of possible majors. Although I'm no longer interested in Environmental Studies this project has reinforced my desire to pursue working with animals. This major offers many career opportunities that involve animals that are both domestic and exotic. The results from my MBTI test fits perfectly with Environmental Studies. My introversion gives me the ability to not mind working on a project for long periods of time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Importance Of Experiential Learning Experiential learning as a creative approach to the modern curriculum is an effective tool in engaging the children to become efficient learners. The process of learning through stimulated experiences can be done both in and outside of schools, it is fun for the children that still meets criteria of the curriculum, however it is the reflection on these experiences that give children a deeper understanding and supports their future learning. 'When planned and implemented well, learning outside the classroom contributed significantly to raising standards and improving pupils' personal, social and emotional development.' (OFSTED, 2008) Through the first section of this assignment I will explore the need for creativity in the education today ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Kolb's theory on the experiential learning cycle he states that "Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience" (Kolb, 1984, p. 38). He shows that learning should obtain concepts that children can apply to different situations and lessons and that their creation of these new concepts is created through new experiences. However, despite Kolb's learning model being widely quoted in the development of a creative curriculum it has also been critiqued for not being effective in education by being too narrow and unable to facilitate other factors of a child's learning. "Several commentators suggest that the learning styles are too simplistic and, whilst they fit neatly into Kolb's cycle, they fail to take account of ways of learning other than experiential." (Forrest, 2004) Forrest explored in Train the Trainer issue 12 that Kolb's model is an equal set of 4 learning stages, but it doesn't fit in with 'people's reality' and so his model only fits with his ideas and can't be applied to other learning tools other than experiential. Earlier, in 2004, Chris Loynes similarly critiqued the model by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 78. Kolb's Experiential Learning Model KOLB – EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING MODEL David Kolb is an American educational theorist whose main work was on experiential learning. He published his learning styles model in 1984, which was later used by him to develop the Experiential Learning Style Inventory. Kolb's model works on two levels. Level one consists of the four stage cycle of learning, and level two consists of four separate learning styles. As per Kolb, new concepts of learning in children developed when they had new experiences. EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CYCLE Kolb's experiential learning cycle is based on four basic points. According to him, all learners go through these stages in their learning process. The basic points are given in the table below– Figure 1 Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle The four stages can be described ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The emphasis that a person places on a particular learning style preference ultimately shows his learning style. The knowledge of a person's learning style enables it to be method–orientated. Diverging (feeling and watching – CE/RO) – The diverging learning style learners' are able to look at situations from different viewpoints. They are sensitive to their surroundings, and prefer to learn by watching rather than doing stuff. They believe in gathering the required information and using their imagination to solve problems. They are best at looking at all situations objectively. Kolb called this style 'Diverging' because these people perform better in situations that require idea– generation, for example, brainstorming. They prefer gathering information and have varied interests. These learners have a strong interest in people, tend to be artistic and sensitive, and have a natural preference for the arts. They prefer to work in groups, to listen with an open mind, and to receive personal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
