UMAYAMDATE: 08 – 19 - 11 <br />SCHEDULE: Friday, 3:00pm – 6:00pm<br />EXPERIMENT NO. 2<br />ON or OFF Diode? – Voltage Test<br />OBJECTIVE:<br />How to determine an ON or OFF diode using the voltage test technique.<br />MATERIALS:<br />1 Variable DC source or equivalent battery supply<br />1 5.6k resistor, ½ watt<br />1 6.8k resistor, ½ watt<br />1 27k resistor, ½ watt<br />1 1N4001 diode<br />2 resistors (values assigned by instructor per group)<br />1 breadboard<br />connecting wires<br />DISCUSSION:<br />In determining whether the diode is ON or OFF by Voltage Test, assume that the diode under consideration is OFF and replace it with an open circuit. Analyze the circuit to find the anode voltage (V1) and the cathode voltage (V2). If the anode voltage (V1) is less than the cathode voltage (V2), the diode is reverse biased (Vd < 0), and your initial assumption is correct, the diode is OFF. If the anode voltage (V1) is greater than the cathode voltage (V2), the diode is forward biased and your initial assumption that the diode is OFF is wrong; the diode is ON and V1 is equal to V2.<br />PROCEDURE:<br />,[object Object]
Measure the anode voltage (V1) of the diode of figure 1 by connecting the multi-tester parallel to R2, such that positive probe is connected to point A and negative probe is connected to ground.
Measure the cathode voltage (V2) of the diode of figure 1 by connecting the multi-tester parallel to 6.8k resistor, such that the positive probe is connected to point and the negative probe to ground.

  • 2. Measure the anode voltage (V1) of the diode of figure 1 by connecting the multi-tester parallel to R2, such that positive probe is connected to point A and negative probe is connected to ground.
  • 3. Measure the cathode voltage (V2) of the diode of figure 1 by connecting the multi-tester parallel to 6.8k resistor, such that the positive probe is connected to point and the negative probe to ground.
  • 4. Measure the diode voltage of figure 1 by connecting the multi-tester parallel to the diode, such that the positive probe of multi-tester is connected to point A and the negative probe to point B.

  • 6. Record the measured cathode voltage for figure 1 in Table 1.
  • 7. Compare the measured anode voltage to the measured cathode voltage of figure 1.
  • 8. Which is greater? Based on the comparison, is the diode ON or OFF? Why?

  • 10. Based on the measured diode voltage of figure 1, is the diode ON or OFF? Why?

  • 12. Record the measured cathode voltage of figure 2 in Table 1. Compare the measured anode voltage to the measured cathode voltage of figure 2, which is greater? Based on the comparison, is the diode ON or OFF? Why?

If the diode is on (V1) anode is greater than the (V2) cathode voltage. And it depends on the resistor connecting to this and the voltage across the diode.<br />
