3.1 Overview of Recommendation for Change As mentioned throughout the
previous section, Target has a very comprehensive CSR program that covers most
areas under this field. Because of this, there is little for the company to do in
regards to starting any new divisions within their CSR efforts; therefore, I believe
it would be most beneficial to fine tune some of its programs to align with the
company s customer base more closely. Additionally, I believe some of Target s
current CSR efforts are rather broad and the company could benefit by really
specializing within some of the areas and establishing goals moving forward.
Finally, although Target seems to emphasize its dedication to supporting the
community and collaborating with other organization, there seems to be a
disconnect between this and some of the company s actions. 3.2 Aligning Company
s CSR Efforts with Customer Base Target recently released its third quarter
financial statements for 2016, where the company recorded a 11% increase in EPS
over last year. CEO Brian Cornell credited much of this growth to its strong back to
school shopping sales. He went on to say that Target has invested much effort in
differentiating themselves from other competitors like Walmart by offering a more
family focused selection, particularly with children s apparel and educational toys.
While it seems that this strategy is currently paying off for Target from its recent

Jim Jones had many jobs before he became leader of the peoples temple. As a child
he spent much of his time alone. He began preaching at 10 years old after going on
weekly trips to church with a neighbor of his. He continued his strong religious
beliefs when moved to Indianapolis with his mother. Jones became a minister at a
local church and held racially integrated services to the church s displeasure.
During the mid 1950 s Jones opened his first church of The People s Temple while
still living in Indiana. As the cult grew in the 60 s Jones relocated to Northern
California and soon after opened churches in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The days leading up to the suicides are vastly important in Jones twisted reasoning in
the decision to make over 900 people commit suicide in the town pavilion. It started
after reports of sexual, mental and physical abuse in Jonestown had been reported to
the US government. After hearing this news Congressman Leo Ryan was flown
into Guyana on November 14th with 31 others including news reporters,
photographers and worried relatives of The People s Temple members. Entry into
Jonestown was denied for three days before the group was welcomed into the town
with dinner and entertainment for the night on November 17th 1978. Throughout
the night members of the group were handed notes from Jonestown citizens asking
for help defecting from the cult. The next day the visitors began to leave
Jonestown with the defecting members of the cult, this sent Jones into a panic, he
believed that the end was near for himself and The Peoples Temple. Jones sent
gunmen to kill the congressman and other visitors before they could leave, only a
handful of 5 people were shot and killed, including Leo Ryan. Jones then called for a
White Night; getting nurses to create a concoction of Kool Aid/Flavour Aid and
Cyanide; an extremely poisonous compound Jones had stockpiled in his time as a
