- I need to start by telling you a terrible secret. I’m not really a techie. (please don’t tell anyone – especially Renee Hobbs and Julie Coiro). I mean, I’m proficient with the tools that I need to use and all that – and over the span of my teaching career, I’ve been considered “an early adopter” but the truth is, the only reason I like “tech tools” at all is because of their affordances to support learning that couldn’t really happen without them. I’ll say that again – I like tech tools because I like to think about their affordances for learning. So in truth, I’m most interested in that – in how to get students to engage deeply with ideas. And because of this, I always have to start my thinking about technology use by thinking about the context, my learners, the ways that I know they learn…and then I think about how the technology will support that. And because of this, I believe that you will see the affordances of Evernote to support online inquiry if I ground this introduction to Evernote in the context of a learning activity – specifically in the context of a unique summer learning program that I helped to design with teacher colleagues in North Branch, Michigan last summer.
- I could say a LOT about the institute – but here’s what you really need to know about howEvernote became part of the learning that teachers and students did. Inspired by last summer’s Olympic games in London, the theme of the summer institute was fitness. Kids engaged in all sorts of physical activity but also created Wonderpolis-inspired Wonders on a topic of interest to them. Wonderopolis is a super popular site for teachers and kids – if you don’t know it, here’s a screenshot – the premise is provide easy-to-understand information for kids about the kinds of questions they wonder about every day…What gives you the giggles? Or What is the Ozone Layer or Does it Hurt to get your ears pierced?
- Through a process of collaborative online inquiry, and a series of revisions, kids created their own Wonders. I’ll show you a couple of examples. Questions included Why do we sweat? What’s the most dangerous sport? Are there benefits to listening to music before a sporting event? How has volleyball evolved?
- So, you’ve seen the end products, but of course, as teachers planned the PROCESS they grappled with the question of which tools would support ONLINE INQUIRY. Julie and I are going to be talking tomorrow about the complexities of this process and ways that we can support it – but from a tool-use perspective, the teachers needed a tool that was easy to use on both computers AND iPads and would allow for kids to collect multi-modal ideas in one place. They noticed quickly that kids were forgetting where they had seen things and they weren’t really thinking critically about how a piece of information would be useful to the creation of their Wonder. This is where Evernote came in.
