Evaluation Task 3What institution would make our thriller?
Warp Films
Warp Films is an independent British Film company which was
established in 1999 through the record label Warp Records, founded by
partners Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett. This London and Sheffield
based production company are truly independent with no strong Media
Ownership supporting them therefore as a consequence, are limited to
only low-budget films unlike other small production companies who are
backed by strong Media Ownership usually from one of the ‘Big 6’
studios. Warp Films was established and has continued to develop sue to
funding by a charity named NESTA (National Endowment for Science
Technology and the Arts) which allowed the company to develop even
though it was without prominent Media Ownership. This may be seen as
a disadvantage but Warp Films try to use this to their advantage to
justifying the unique and controversial messages sometimes
portrayed in their work making them noticeably different to
other production companies.
The films made by Warp Films usually fit the connotations of genres such as crime, thriller, drama, action,
horror and comedy. This is why I think our thriller fits the general ethos of the company because they’ve
produced a lot of films that share narrative and genre connotations that are present within our film. Here
are some examples:
!
2004 - Dead Man’s Shoes —— crime, drama, thriller
2006 - This Is England —— crime, drama
2008 - Donkey Punch —— crime, drama, horror
2010 - Four Lions —— comedy, crime, thriller
2010 - This Is England ’86 —— crime, drama
2011 - Tyrannosaur —— drama
2011 - Kill List —— crime, drama, horror
2011 - This Is England ’88 —— crime, drama
2011- The Snowtown Murders —— biography, crime, drama
2012 - Berberian Sound Studios —— drama, horror, thriller
2013 - Southcliffe —— drama
2013 - For Those in Peril —— drama
2014 - ’71 —— action, drama, thriller
2015 - This is England ’90 —— crime, drama
2015 - The Last Panthers —— action, crime, drama
Warp Films
If we were to continue filming our thriller and creating a feature film out of it,
there would be moments where we would explore mental illness through film
which, from our research towards our target audience, is a slightly controversial
topic that put of some of our audience. However, Warp Films credit themselves
on they’re desire to portray contentious ideas and themes so ideas like this they
have embraced and will likely continue to.
Warp Films
Columbia Pictures is an American tim studio, film distributor and
production company that is a member of the Sony Pictures Motion
Picture Group, a section of Sony Entertainments’s ‘Sony Pictures’
subsidiary which creates part of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. The
studio was founded 100 years ago in 1918 by Jack Cohn, Joe Brandt and Harry Cohn but was
named at the time, ‘Cohn-Brandt-Cohn Film Sales’ and was a a private company that didn’t
actually release anything until 1922. Two years later it adopted the name of Columbia Pictures
and eventually went public in 1926. The development of the company was slow but was assisted
by the influence of director Frank Capra and many actors such as, Jean Arthur, Cary Grant, Rita
Hayworth, Rosalind Russell, Glenn Ford and William Holden.
!
In 1982 the studio was bought by Th Coca-Cola Company and converged with HBO and CBS to
launch their subsidiary TriStar Pictures. There was some dispute with Coca Cola in the following
years and Columbia Pictures was eventually let go. However, Coca Cola still gave some funding
to the institution allowing it to develop into Columbia Entertainment.
!
As Columbia Pictures is part of Sony, the fifth largest film studios in the institution, it has the
opportunity to create films with very large budgets and usually do well because of the
production value and the marketing available to them allowing them to create a high demand for
their product. By having the access to the budget and facilities to make successful films that
they can use as their tentpole film, they can use the money profited from them to fund their
smaller films, the ones that the don't expect to gain the greatest gross from.
Columbia Pictures
Columbia Pictures
Here is a short list of some of the films they’ve produced:
!
2002 - Panic Room — crime, drama, thriller, psychological thriller
2005 - The Fog — horror
2006 - The Da Vinci Code — mystery, thriller
2010 - Salt — Action, crime, mystery
2011 - Anonymous — drama, history thriller
2011 - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo — crime, drama, mystery
2012 - Total Recall — action, adventure, mystery
2013 - Captain Philips — biography, drama, thriller
2014 - The Missing — crime, drama, mystery
2014 - 22 Jump Street — action, comedy, crime
2015 - Goosebumps — adventure, comedy, family
2015 - Pixels — animation, action, comedy
2016 - Inferno — action, adventure, crime, thriller
2016 - Ghostbusters — action comedy, fantasy
2016 - Passengers — Adventure, drama, romance
2016 - The Shallows — drama, horror, thriller
Columbia Pictures
From the previous list I feel like our thriller would do
well being produced by Columbus Pictures because
from the list, there are common genres most of which comply with the
narrative of our thriller. By producing our film with Columbian Pictures, we
would have a lot of freedom because of the budget we’d be given.
Although it probably wouldn’t gross the amount of money that their
tentpole films do such as ‘Skyfall', ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ and ‘Men in
Black’, however, judging from the list above, our film would fit with the
ethos of the company and seems to be fairly similar films that they've
produced from profit of their tentpoles.
Overall, if we had the opportunity to produce our thriller with either company
we would be very lucky but there are disadvantages and advantages with both.
With Columbian Pictures, we would have much larger budget allowing us to be
able to experiment with the way we portray or narrative however, I think with
our thriller, I think its the simplicity that makes it work. Therefore, I think I would
choose to go with Warp Films because there are people here who have worked
with very small budgets who are still able to produce an excellent product whilst
still giving is a raw and not so glamorous feel, which for our thriller is perfect.
Warp Films are known for trying to present controversial ideas through film so I
can’t think of a better studio to produce it.
Warp Films or Columbia Pictures

Evaluation task 3

  • 1. Evaluation Task 3What institution would make our thriller?
  • 2. Warp Films Warp Films is an independent British Film company which was established in 1999 through the record label Warp Records, founded by partners Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett. This London and Sheffield based production company are truly independent with no strong Media Ownership supporting them therefore as a consequence, are limited to only low-budget films unlike other small production companies who are backed by strong Media Ownership usually from one of the ‘Big 6’ studios. Warp Films was established and has continued to develop sue to funding by a charity named NESTA (National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts) which allowed the company to develop even though it was without prominent Media Ownership. This may be seen as a disadvantage but Warp Films try to use this to their advantage to justifying the unique and controversial messages sometimes portrayed in their work making them noticeably different to other production companies.
  • 3. The films made by Warp Films usually fit the connotations of genres such as crime, thriller, drama, action, horror and comedy. This is why I think our thriller fits the general ethos of the company because they’ve produced a lot of films that share narrative and genre connotations that are present within our film. Here are some examples: ! 2004 - Dead Man’s Shoes —— crime, drama, thriller 2006 - This Is England —— crime, drama 2008 - Donkey Punch —— crime, drama, horror 2010 - Four Lions —— comedy, crime, thriller 2010 - This Is England ’86 —— crime, drama 2011 - Tyrannosaur —— drama 2011 - Kill List —— crime, drama, horror 2011 - This Is England ’88 —— crime, drama 2011- The Snowtown Murders —— biography, crime, drama 2012 - Berberian Sound Studios —— drama, horror, thriller 2013 - Southcliffe —— drama 2013 - For Those in Peril —— drama 2014 - ’71 —— action, drama, thriller 2015 - This is England ’90 —— crime, drama 2015 - The Last Panthers —— action, crime, drama Warp Films

However, Warp Films credit themselves on they’re desire to portray contentious ideas and themes so ideas like this they have embraced and will likely continue to. Warp Films

Columbia Pictures is an American tim studio, film distributor and production company that is a member of the Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, a section of Sony Entertainments’s ‘Sony Pictures’ subsidiary which creates part of the Japanese conglomerate Sony. The studio was founded 100 years ago in 1918 by Jack Cohn, Joe Brandt and Harry Cohn but was named at the time, ‘Cohn-Brandt-Cohn Film Sales’ and was a a private company that didn’t actually release anything until 1922. Two years later it adopted the name of Columbia Pictures and eventually went public in 1926. The development of the company was slow but was assisted by the influence of director Frank Capra and many actors such as, Jean Arthur, Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, Rosalind Russell, Glenn Ford and William Holden. ! In 1982 the studio was bought by Th Coca-Cola Company and converged with HBO and CBS to launch their subsidiary TriStar Pictures. There was some dispute with Coca Cola in the following years and Columbia Pictures was eventually let go. However, Coca Cola still gave some funding to the institution allowing it to develop into Columbia Entertainment. ! As Columbia Pictures is part of Sony, the fifth largest film studios in the institution, it has the opportunity to create films with very large budgets and usually do well because of the production value and the marketing available to them allowing them to create a high demand for their product. By having the access to the budget and facilities to make successful films that they can use as their tentpole film, they can use the money profited from them to fund their smaller films, the ones that the don't expect to gain the greatest gross from. • 7. Columbia Pictures From the previous list I feel like our thriller would do well being produced by Columbus Pictures because from the list, there are common genres most of which comply with the narrative of our thriller. By producing our film with Columbian Pictures, we would have a lot of freedom because of the budget we’d be given. Although it probably wouldn’t gross the amount of money that their tentpole films do such as ‘Skyfall', ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ and ‘Men in Black’, however, judging from the list above, our film would fit with the ethos of the company and seems to be fairly similar films that they've produced from profit of their tentpoles.
  • 8. Overall, if we had the opportunity to produce our thriller with either company we would be very lucky but there are disadvantages and advantages with both. With Columbian Pictures, we would have much larger budget allowing us to be able to experiment with the way we portray or narrative however, I think with our thriller, I think its the simplicity that makes it work. Therefore, I think I would choose to go with Warp Films because there are people here who have worked with very small budgets who are still able to produce an excellent product whilst still giving is a raw and not so glamorous feel, which for our thriller is perfect. Warp Films are known for trying to present controversial ideas through film so I can’t think of a better studio to produce it. Warp Films or Columbia Pictures
