The media product was influenced by music videos from Simple Plan and films like Saving Private Ryan. A focus group provided feedback that transitions be added to the music video to make it more professional. Audience research also found the digipack lacked continuity, so the images were rearranged and edited to improve it. Feedback helped refine the print advert as well.
1. Evaluation Question One
In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
2. Influences (music video):
We had a number of influences
on our music video from other
bands within our genre and
also from external media
products. We had an influence
from Simple Plan’s video for
our lighting techniques in the
performance element and this
helps us to develop forms and
conventions of real media
products. The lighting helps to
promote the artist and create a
star image which relates to
Goodwin’s theory.
3. External Influences (music video):
We were also influenced by the
external media product of the
film, “Saving Private Ryan” and
we developed our main
character as a soldier for the
video from this film. Having a
soldier as the main character of
a music is quite unique and
entropic.
4. Influences (digipack):
I researched a number of
existing CD albums before
creating my own digipack.
My main influence of style
was from The Script’s CD
album as they have the
simple images and I
developed the images into
my own idea of headshots in
black and white to allow for
the colour and font to stand
out.
5. Influences for Print Advert
(Coldplay):
For my print advert, Coldplay
in terms of having the idea of
having the whole band posing
together really effective and
used this is in my own print
advert but developed it into
having them sat down after
experimentation with different
compositions. This advert also
gave me a good
understanding about
conventions of a print advert.
E.g. Star Ratings.
6. Influences for Print Advert
(Simple Plan):
Sitting down makes the band
seem approachable and the
pose in the advert of Simple
Plan’s makes the band seem
“cool” to the target age group.
This is another reason I thought
of the band sitting in
experimentation. Another
influence from Simple Plan’s
advert was the layout of having
the image in the top half of the
page and the information in the
bottom half with a subtle
separation in the middle.
7. Audience Research (Music
Video):
Audience research directed my
creativity a great deal.
Organising a focus group to
analyse our rough cut for our
video was very useful as we
received feedback of adding
more transitions to make the
video look more professional and
make the editing smoother. We
also added more shots of the
moon in response to the
feedback to make the visuals
more relevant to the lyrics.
8. Audience Research (Print
Products):
I conducted audience
feedback research often
throughout my work using
a Facebook group to
improve my print products.
My first bit of audience
feedback on my digipack
helped me to notice that it
lacked continuity which
led me to rearrange the
images and edit some of
them so they were in-
keeping with the house-
style. The feedback was
also useful with any
changes that needed to
be on the print advert.
