2. Question one: In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media
products?
Locations: When looking at other music videos from our particular genre of music we found that
the locations were very natural and represented the band in some way, this is something we used
within our music video. We also looked at the naturalistic shots shown within The Libertines Video
(Don’t Look Back Into The Sun) and incorporated that idea within our video in some way. As well as
the outside shots we also showed our band performing, which is again an idea we gained from
looking at other music videos.
3. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products?
Costumes: From what we learnt when doing our audience research we dressed our actors in
stereotypical 'indie' style clothing, which is something that is common within other videos of the
same genre. However, in The Libertines video the band are dressed in costume, this is an idea we
decided not to use as a more laid back approach to their clothing seemed to appeal and fit in more
to our target audience. Although in other videos of theirs they do wear more casual clothing.
4. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms
and conventions of real media products?
Story/Narrative: When researching into music videos of the indie genre I found that there never really
was a story or narrative to the video, particularly in The Libertines videos. The videos I looked at consisted
very much of very random hectic, quick shots particularly within the music videos of the band The
Wombats. However when you look at bands like Bombay Bicycle Club their videos consist very much of
slow, natural shots. As a group we decided to incorporate both of these ideas within our music video.
5. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Digi pak: When designing our Digi Pak we wanted to incorporate the theme and style of the video into our Digi Pak to create
synergy between all the products. We achieved this through taking natural shots within the locations that we used i.e. Train
station, music room and several shots around town. We chose colours to reflect the band The Libertines as well as the indie
genre. The bright vibrant colours reflect the band individually as within most of their videos they do use a vivid colours, and the
black and white reflects the indie genre as a whole as this is something that is common within most bands.
6. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
Advert: Again we wanted to follow a similar theme throughout all of our products, therefore we chose to use the same
picture on our advert as we did on the front cover of our Digi pak to create synergy and develop the forms and
conventions of real media products, This is also something that The Libertines have done in the past. The advert follows
the forms and conventions of most album adverts out there through its use of advertising and iconography, The colours
used are again vibrant to mimic the style of The Libertines who have always used vivid colours we also used a similar font
to the one The Libertines to create that dishevelled look that The Libertines tend to follow.
7. Question two: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary
texts?
The combination of my main product and ancillary texts works exceptionally well together because of the use of synergy, as a
group we chose to use the same image from a scene from our video on the album cover as well as the magazine
advertisement. I think this works well as it allows the audience to become familiar with the bands products and also allows
the band to become more recognisable to their target audience, this will help with promoting the package as as a whole as it is
easy to distinguish to its audience and others. This is something that is common within bands especially with our band The
Libertines.
8. Question three: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
To gain audience feedback we gave our target audience the opportunity to post comments on both You Tube and Facebook.
As well as this we created a Survey Monkey questionnaire to use alongside the video to gain extra feedback from our
audience. From the audience research we found that people felt the video was of a very good standard and the overall video
fitted in with the ‘indie’ genre. However some felt that the shots could have been of a quicker pace and look less ‘staged’ and
more naturalistic.
10. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
YouTube: throughout the process of all these stages we used a high level of technology continuously, one of these
technologies was YouTube. Using YouTube allowed us to thoroughly research other existing videos within the indie genre as
well as being able to publicly put our own video out to gain appropriate feedback. YouTube deemed very important
throughout the research stages as it gave us an insight into what was expected of us when making a video for the indie genre.
11. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Blogger: Throughout the process of producing a music video we used a blogging site to document each and every process we
went through to come up with the final product. The blogging site allowed me to illustrate any thoughts I had in regards to
the video in a simple and orderly fashion as well as share any thoughts with the rest of my group, we were also able to give
each other direct feedback both in and out of lesson time.
12. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Survey Monkey: Throughout our research tasks we used Survey Monkey to create surveys to put forward to our
audience, Survey Monkey allowed us to collect and analyse results simply and efficiently. Doing the surveys allowed us to
gain a better perspective of what was expected from us when making the video, and the results gathered did effect the
decisions made.
13. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Facebook: We used Facebook as another tool to gain audience research as well as feedback, we felt Facebook would be a
great place to gain good solid feedback as the people on our Facebook are ideal for our target audience. Facebook also
helped to ensure that our surveys were done to a good standard and that our video had enough views and comments to be
able to gain some feedback.
14. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Camera: When filming for our video we used a Nikon d600 camera, this gave us the best opportunity to make sure our video
was of the highest quality it could possibly be. The camera was excellent at remaining with good focused shots
throughout, particularly within the fast paced free hand footage we filmed in the music studio.
15. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Photo Shop: we used photo shop for the production of our Digi pak and album advert, as a group we were already
particularly confident in using the programme as we had used in our last media task and this became very useful in the
construction stages. Using photo shop meant we could get a good, high quality professional looking final product,
particularly in terms of layout design. We were also able to carry out the dishevelled image The Libertines portray through
the tools that photo shop had to offer.
16. Question four: How did you use media technologies in the construction and
research, planning and evaluation stages?
Final Cut Pro: for the process of editing the video we used Final Cut Pro, a programme like this allowed us to edit together a
really professional looking final product and had no limits when it came to us wanting to add certain special effects, such as
the sped up and reversed clips. After we had originally edited the video we felt that the overall colour of the video was too
bright for our genre of music, because of this using final cut pro we decided to lower the brightness levels of the shots which
fitted in much better with the image we were going for.
