2. Goodwin’s 6 features of a music video:
• Relationship between the lyrics and visuals
• Illustrate, Amplify, Disjuncture
• Demonstrate Genre Characteristics
• Demands of record label – Close ups of artist,
etc.
• Notion of looking – particularly voyeuristic
treatment of the female body
• Intertextual reference (to films, TV etc.)
3. 1) Relationship between the lyrics and
the visuals…
“I don’t know why
you’re being shy”
“The way that you flip
your hair gets me
overwhelmed”
“when you smile
at the ground it
aint hard to
tell…”
“if only you saw what
I could see”
4. 2) Lyrics illustrate, amplify, disjuncture the
tone and atmosphere of the visuals.
“You don’t know” – As these lyrics are sang
we see the girl here make an ‘O’ shape
with her mouth as her hat falls off. This
amplifies the lyrics.
Throughout the song, we see them socialising on
the beach and at this point they are having a party
by the fire. This doesn’t really relate to any meaning
of the song so this is a form of disjuncture.
“Everyone else in the room can see it”
– As these lyrics are sung, we see the
group meet up and the lyrics are
illustrated by there being a group of
people so “everyone else” would be
included in this line.
5. 3) Demonstrate Genre Characteristics
This is typical of the genre of pop to have the whole boy band
walking, singing and styled the same. There isn’t dance
routines in this but they are all doing the same actions at this
point which has a similar effect. They are shown as united
together in their song.
The pop genre is entertaining and light hearted. This shot
of them all clapping to the beat appeals to young
audience’s as there suggests there is a party and
entertainment. Young audience’s can also relate to it as
they are of a similar age group.
It is typical of pop genre with male artists
to have shots of them singing to beautiful
girls. It makes the artist appeal female
target audience even more!
6. 4) The demands of the record label
Close ups of the artist are
used a lot throughout this
music video. There are close
ups of the individual band
members and many shots of
the band together.
7. 5) Frequent reference to the notion of
looking
We are shown this shot as if we (the audience)
are in the van looking at the band. This makes us
feel like we are included in the events and as if
we are getting a VIP shot. It also makes us feel as
though we are seeing exclusive images of the
band as the viewpoint looks a bit like “spying.”
Here our attention is brought to
the topless artists and this is a
voyeuristic treatment of the
male’s bodies.
8. 6) Intertextual reference…
There is reference to film here as it
says “Directed by…”
The setting around the fire on
the beach appears as though it
is from a film as there is clearly
a story as to why they are all
there together but we are only
shown parts of it.
