Brief
• In order to gauge a better understanding of
the wants and needs of our target audience, I
have decided to collate answers from a
questionnaire. I felt the most professional way
to do this was by doing it electronically, using
‘Survey Monkey’. I have presented here the
results that were gathered through the
responses I received.
Question 1
Based on these results it is clear that
the majority of my target audience will
be of the female gender. This does not
come as a surprise to me based on the
fact that the female gender are
stereotypically known to relate more to
soap opera’s and so it is a predictable
result that more females than men will
be watching the soap opera.
Question 2
This question was another key question in order for me to
gauge what sort of audience I am aiming towards. Based on
the results I have received it is clear that my target audience
is teenagers and young adults as those age brackets collated
72% of the total responses. This means that I will have to
mainly aim towards making the magazine appropriate
towards that age group. This means that it will need brighter
and more exciting colours. As well as this I will also need to
add more exciting and gossip-like storylines on the cover to
attract them to buy the magazine. However I will also need
to accommodate some factors which will appeal to the
people who were above 30 as there were still 3 people in
that category. This means having some serious stories on
the cover and adding things that they said they would like to
see on the cover.
Question 3
When the question was presented about how often they would
actually watch a soap opera every week I received some very
interesting results. It turned out that 54% would watch soap’s
at least once or twice a week however 45% people asked
would not ever watch a soap opera. As a result of this I will
need to be find those who said that they do watch the soap
operas and find out what they specifically like in a soap opera
magazine as the others that were asked will not know due to
the fact that they do not watch soap’s. However I could also ask
them what they would like to see in one in order to encourage
them to watch a soap opera or whether reading a magazine on
them would help get them into it.
Question4
Based on the average score that each of the genres received, the highest
average score was Marital issues. This reveals that I will need to target this
in my trailer specifically in order to please the viewers. However it will be
important that I also include romance as a main theme due to the fact that
that achieved the highest amount of first place votes. Based on both the
first placed votes and average scores I will try to not include homosexual
relationships as it received the lowest scores in both of the categories.
Question 5
Based on the general answers to this question it was because they
felt that they could relate to the theme of the soap as it was similar
to what happens their own day-to-day lives. As a result of this, it is
key that I incorporate relatable themes into the soap opera that
were creating in order to generate a good buzz form the audience.
Question 6
Based on the results of this question it is clear that Eastenders is the most
popular soap opera that is out on TV at the moment. As a result of this I will
try to Incorporate components of the Eastenders soap into our own so that it
will provide entertainment for the viewers.
Question 7
The representation of women is a key aspect of soap operas in the
current day and age. This is clearly represented in the fact that 82%
people said that it was important in a soap opera. In order to
present this effectively in my own soap I will need make sure that
we present them as empowered and in control which is a common
anti-stereotype to how women are usually presented in other
television shows.
Question 8
Again similarly to answers form previous
questions, it seems the common
consensus is because they can personally
relate to them which make sit appealing
to watch for the viewers. As a result I will
need to ensure we can allow the viewers
to personally relate to our soap opera.
Question 9
Based on the responses gathered form this
question family issues, issues on gender and
thriller are the most popular themes they want
to see when viewing the soap operas. In order
to make our soap more likeable for them I will
need to make sure that these themes are
included.
Question 10
The most popular area to have the soap
opera set was the urban working class
setting. I expected this as this is where
most new-age soaps are located such as
Eastenders. We have decided to set our
own soap in this location as we feel it will
be best suited and will go along with the
common stereotype of the setting for other
soap operas.
