- 1. DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILM INSTITUTIONS
- 2. 20th Century fox • This film corporation is one of the major 6 American film studios. The organisation was founded in 1935 and has become one of the most recognised film institutions in the world. • The institution have created some of the most successful films to this date for example, Avatar/ Star wars & The Chronicles of Narnia. • However, 20th Century Fox do prefer to produce comedy/ fantasy and family type films such as, Doctor Do-little, Alvin and the Chipmunks and Night at the museum. This is because they seem to be the most profitable films. Even though they have also created horror and thriller movies such as, From hell, The Omen and Shutter I still question weather or not this is a suitable institution for our Thriller.
- 3. Warner Bros • Warner bros is another one of the main film studios based in California and New York. Warner Bros is a global leader in the production, distribution and marketing of all forms of creative content. • Some of the most popular films made by Warner Bros Fox are: Harry Potter, The Dark Knight, The hangover and Slumdog Millionaire. • Warner Bros produce a variety of films in different genres, from comedy, romance, fantasy, Thriller, action and horror. • After researching what Horror/Thriller movies Warner Bros had been involved in creating I compared it to 20th century fox and noticed that they had produced more well know and successful horror movies. • Examples of these movies are Orphan, Friday the 13th, One missed call, Sweeney Todd, house of wax and The Wicker Man. • The list of well-known films Warner Bros has produced is much longer than the 20th Century Fox list, which means if I was to choose between the two on which would be more suitable for my film is Warner Bros as they have more experience with the thriller genre which means they would make better success out of my film.
- 4. Universal Pictures • Universal Pictures, also known as Universal studios, is a subsidiary of NBC Universal, and one of the six major movie studios. Founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, it is one of the oldest American movie studios still in continuous production. • It has achieved both popular success and won awards for movies such as, The Bourne Ultimatum, King Kong, Brokeback Mountain, Ray and A Beautiful Mind. Similar to 20th Century Fox, Universal Picture prefer to create films focus and drama, romance and adventure. This is because those genres are their most successful and they prefer not to risk creating things in other genres as it is out of there comfort zone and might fail. • Some of the well known thriller/horror films distributed by Universal studios are: Drag me to hell, The strangers, Dead silence and Dracula. • From this research I am able to tell that Universal Pictures do not have as much success and experience with horror/ Thriller movies compared to Warner Bros. Therefor if I was to choose which institution out of the ones I have researched the more suitable to produce my movie is still Warner Bros
- 5. Lionsgate • Lionsgate is a Canadian entertainment company. As of 2007, it is the most commercially successful independent film and television distribution company in North America. They produce and distribute motion pictures, television programming, home entertainment and family entertainment. • A few of the most popular films distributed by Lionsgate is, Kick Ass, Religulous, Forbidden Kingdom, Rambo and The Bank Job. • After doing some research on this institution I noticed that the genres they prefer to produce or distribute are drama, action and thrillers. Examples of thrillers are, Open water, Hostel, Abduction, American Psycho and The next three days. • From this research I have discovered that Thriller may be one of their strongest points when making or distributing films. The reason this information is needed is so I can decide weather this film institution is suitable to create our thriller movie. I think that Lionsgate has the potential to produce or distribute our movie as they seem to have enough experience with the Thriller genre.
- 6. To sum up • After carrying out all of my research I think that the two best companies to distribute our thriller movie is either Warner Bros or Lionsgate. This is because they both have more experience in producing and distributing films of this drama as well as more success than the other institutions (Universal Pictures and 20th Century Fox.
