What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and why?
Question 3 AS Media
What is film distribution?
The term ‘film distribution’ links to the way in which
companies to do with the movie distribute the movie in order
to build hype and an audience before the movie is released.
They could build hype through billboards, interviews, adverts
and being on shows. Some companies that are good at
distributing include: Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox and
Lionsgate.
During my research into the genre which is horror
and sub-genre satanic i looked at films which
were ‘Ouija: Origin of Evil 2016’ and ‘The
conjuring 2’. I then decided that i needed to look
into the companies or company that distributed
these films as they were in the genre that our
opening sequence was on.
The Conjuring 2
‘New line Cinema’ are the main distributors for the film ‘The conjuring 2’, however
the company is owned by one of the ‘Big three’ in Warner bros.
New Line Cinema is an American film studio that was founded in 1967 by Robert
Shaye as a film distribution company, later becoming an independent film studio.
Warner Bros are one of the biggest distributing companies. Below is the link for

Ouija: Origin of Evil
Ouija: Origin of Evil was produced by Universal pictures who are very well known, Universal Pictures is an
American film studio owned by Comcast through the Universal Filmed Entertainment Group division of its
wholly owned subsidiary NBCUniversal. It was founded in 1912 and is among one of the top 6. So even
though it did not make a lot of money it still is a very popular genre as Michael Bay directed it. Universal is
highly recognised mainly in the US. Below is the link for the trailer:

Who should distribute media production?
I believe that our work though has a look of an American horror film would be still produced by a UK
distributor as it is made in the UK. In this case i believe that Lionsgate UK should produce our film, In
2005 Lionsgate acquired a UK based distributor for films renaming the company to Lionsgate UK.
Lionsgate are also big in the horror genre as they produced movies such as: ‘The cabin in the woods’,
‘Texas chainsaw’, ‘Blair witch’ and also all the ‘Saw’. This just shows you the impact they have had in the
genre and how they help produce some of the biggest horror films, and also biggest franchises in the
‘Saw’ in which went all the way up to Saw 8 which is being produced this year sometime.
Why?
I believe that Lionsgate Uk are the perfect company to distribute our production as they are already a big
fan of horror and have some of the best horror films produced around. I believe that if you look at their
history of production then you will see that they are the perfect fit and production company. Lionsgate also
produce films that you could argue are small budget films and done well with them for example the `Saw’
franchise, you can see above that the first movie made $103,880,027 from a budget of $1,200,000
showing how a big production company can change a movies popularity and improve the income
massively. Though our movie obviously did not have the budget like ‘Saw’ it still shows that small movies
are helped a lot by big production companies and in this case Lionsgate helped them massively as the
franchise only grew from then on and made more and more money as they are now producing the 8th
‘Saw’ movie. Below is the sum for all the films in the franchise of ‘Saw’.
