QUESTION 3
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
QUESTION INTRODUCTION
Throughout most stages of each of our projects;
our trailer, poster and magazine for ‘Decay’, we
used numerous methods to gain an extensive
amount of audience feedback to further our work.
This audience-creator communication began in
the research and planning stages and continued
throughout, all the way to the creation of the
finished product.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR
OUR FILM CONCEPTS
• When starting our overall film concept, each
member of the group came up with their own
concept, which was then uploaded as a video giving
a general outline on the film synopsis. We then
used SurveyMonkey to send these videos, along
with a survey, to those who fitted in to our target
demographic; generally young people.
• We then used different visual and worded ways to
display the information received from these
surveys.
“Has a British
sense of
individuality”
“Has a lot of
potential and
opportunities for
creative control”
“Add an ending
that is
unexpected and
surprises the
audience”
“Develop the
characters further
and give them an
identity”
“Interesting
depiction of how
disaster could
affect individuals”
“Sounds the most
interesting and
engages me but
develop the detail
in the storyline”
HOW DID THIS FEEDBACK
AFFECT OUR PRODUCTION?
The concept for DECAY joint-led our polls with 40% of the votes in our audience
survey. This allowed us to give the audience a clear choice on what kind of film they
would prefer to watch and also gave us an insight into the content that they would
enjoy. Their feedback on our characters, plots and themes influenced us when
choosing our film but also on the content that we would include in our media
production.
Our target audience was mainly males aged 18-35, and therefore decided to cast
males in our protagonist roles, allowing our audience to connect with the characters.
In addition to this, by having two protagonists instead of one, we added further
character development, a key area that was identified by our audience feedback.
Further to this, our audience seemed to want an unexpected ending, and in response
to this we infected the older brother, leading him to die at the end. Our setting was in
line with out concept, and we chose to shoot at abandoned urban centers to keep in
demand with our audiences wants.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR OUR
TRAILER
After completing both our first and second draft of
the trailer, we asked for audience feedback for
comments that would possibly help improve it.
We sent our trailer to audience members and
awaited feedback.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR OUR
TRAILER
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR OUR
TRAILER
The improvements mentioned in our audience feedback drastically impacted
upon our final production. The comments made us revisit our editing stage to
completely change the ordering of our shots, removing the CCTV clip and adding
further clips. We also edited our soundtrack to make it more tense and fit our
product more. Further to this we imported sound clips to create background noise
prior to the outbreak, highlighting the contrast between the post and pre-
apocalyptic world.
In addition to this, we imported further sound effects to accompany the
characters movements when they are in the house. Such as heavy breathing and
questions to break the silence. This was suggested by our audience as they felt
that the silence was unprofessional and didn't realistically represent a persons
reaction to that situation.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK FOR OUR
LOGO DESIGN
When creating our logo, we
asked our target audience for
feedback at multiple stages,
eventually creating 4 final logos.
From here we conducted a
survey to see what our target
audience thought of our logos
and which one suited our
production best.
“Seems too nice for a
horror production,
however it’s indie
nature matches your
home-grown kind of
media production”
“The lines look too
soft and it seems
like a logo for a Sci-
fi production rather
than a horror
production”
“Develop the
colour scheme to
match your other
products to
create a brand”
“Looks like a music
company rather than
the production logo of
a horror film producer”
HOW DID THIS FEEDBACK AFFECT
MY LOGO?
We received various improvements from feedback for our logos,
and for many we took on the advice provided and applied it to
our product. For both logo 1 and 3 we adjusted the text sizing
and spacing between the text and picture to suggest a
professionalism about our work. While for logo 2 we edited the
circle lines to make them sharper in a sense, providing a harsher
look so the consumers eyes are drawn more heavily to the logo
for it’s mysterious nature.
However for all logos we adjusted the colour scheme and font to
create a more in-sync product in line with our poster and
magazine, therefore furthering the brand of ‘DECAY’. By
establishing a brand across our media products and combining
that with a logo, we made our product recognisable and more
professional in a sense.
