2. Introduction
Throughout the process of my A2 coursework
of my trailer, poster and magazine for
‘Tardigrade’ and we took the opportunity to
gather audience feedback for the different
products. We did this though the research
and planning stage and through the
production of these three products.
3. Audience Feedback on Our
PITCHES
At the beginning of the course we got into
groups and created pitches for five possible
movie ideas we could do for our coursework.
We recorded the plots of them and then put
them into a video and created a survey on
Survey Monkey to gather feedback to what
pitch they preferred and give us points to
improve. We used charts to gather our results
and displayed them through a PowerPoint.
4. What Were the Responses?
“I like the fact that the
government are trying to
reduce the population which
is a current issue and a big
challenge”
“The ending could
be left open or go
one way or another.”
“Maybe have a plot
twist to make the
ending more
dramatic.”
“Add in a tough
women partner.”
“I’d like the government to
have a twist to them like
they’re using the virus to
wipe-out a certain type of
people.”
“Have one of the
zombies turning
back to human.”
5. How Did This Feedback Shape
Our Production?
Since the concept of Tardigrade was voted for the most with 50% of the votes
in our survey. This results then influenced us to create the three products for
this film. By having the audience chose what film they would rather watch out
of the options given gave us an insight into what concept would be the most
popular. Their opinions on our plot and characters that were involved then
gave us inspiration for the decisions on what we should include in our
production.
Through the survey we were given points of improvement to develop our plot
by the audience. These improvements helped shape our trailer and fit with the
genre of our film. Many people enjoyed the fact that the government is
corrupted and how they are trying to reduce the population which is a current
issue today. One respondent commented on having one of the zombies turn
into human again, we took this and added it into the end of our plot and even
though it isn’t shown in our trailer, we have implied it through our main
character (Dr Mason Cooper), saying that he can fix it and save everybody.
6. Audience Feedback for
PLANNING TASKS.
During this stage of our production we thought
that is was important to gather audience feedback
on our script and storyboard to help develop our
plot for ‘Tardigrade’. This allowed us to plan out
our trailer with the audience in the back of our
minds who are the consumers of our three
products. We received the audience feedback for
our script and storyboard verbally and used it to
improve the two products.
7. What Were the Responses?
“A well thought out
idea and storyline, I
can see it working
out well.”
“I Like the illustrations
used and there is a good
use of shots e.g. Zombie
knocking over the
camera.”
“Brilliant, it sound
like a solid idea and
great illustrations.”
“Maybe you could
add in a survivors
shot at the end?”
“Great concept, maybe in the
script you could develop your
conference since or add in a
vlog by mason of the
process”
“Love the idea , try and add
in more zombie shots e.g.
people running away from
them or getting attacked”
“Show the protagonist
more otherwise the
audience won’t know
who it is”
8. How Did This Feedback Shape
Our Production?
The feedback that we gathered from our storyboard was crucial since it
shaped our production and impacted our decisions. We decided as a
group to take on the comments and more shots were added into our final
cut to create more creative and visual shots. This included more zombie
shots throughout the trailer and a survivors shot at the end. We also
added into our trailer more shots of our main character Dr Mason Cooper
so the audience knows who are protagonist is.
The feedback for our script also helped us since again it helped us shape
our trailer to what it is now. We developed our conference scene so it
gives the audience more background and information about the
governments plan to reduce the population. We also used bits of the
conference scene as voiceovers over our footage. Furthermore in our
script we also added in a vlog by Mason during the process of making the
vaccine, this then got the audience following along with his story of what
happened to the world and this is then developed through voiceovers.
9. Audience Feedback For FONT
DECISIONS
Gather feedback for this was also important
since we wanted our title to be effective and
draw the audience in as well as following the
typical conventions for our genre. For this we
also gathered verbal feedback from our
audience.
10. What Were the Responses?
“I prefer the metallic
looking font, since I
think they best fit with
your genre”
“Maybe try and look at
other films that are a
similar genre to yours
and use their title as
inspiration”
“I like the metallic fonts
but they remind me too
much of gladiator film
titles.”
“I like how the font looks
like it’s deteriorating as
it nicely links into your
genre.”
“I think the metallic fonts would
work the best as I don't think the
other fonts would fit with the
genre. Why don’t you look at the
I am legend poster for
inspiration?”
“I think the title would
still work without the
zombie hand on it.”
“In my opinion I think that the
coloured fonts don’t fit with
the genre. I think you could
add maybe red in the title to
reflect death and the
zombies?”
11. How Did This Shape Our
Production?
By popular demand many preferred the metallic font with a
deteriorated font since it fitted best with the plot our film.
Based on the feedback we decided that we were going to
use that for our poster and character posters.
From the feedback we thought that the audience chose
this font because it links to the isolated locations and the
genre of the film. As stated in the feedback we used
inspiration for our title from I Am Legend. From this it
helped impact our production and proving the importance of
our audience feedback as we have used this title in our
posters and our trailer and this created a brand.
12. Audience Feedback for PRINT
WORK
After finishing the second draft of our poster
and magazine, we decided to show them and
gather audience feedback and improvements
on the print work used.
13. What were the responses?
“Love the idea of the
hand grabbing the
character”
“I like the picture on the
magazine but maybe you
could take a different one
so it’s not similar to the
poster?”“Could you maybe have
a full image instead of
half him?”
“I like how you changed
the colour of the title on
the magazine”
“Great use of synergy of
the picture between the
poster and magazine”
“Have you tried looking at
other posters and
magazines to see how
they have laid them out?”
14. How Did This Shape Our
Production?
After gathering our feedback on both our poster and
magazine, we used the improvements we were given and
these further improved our products for our final
production. We did two more photoshoots for our
magazine and poster so we could change both of our
images. When we were creating our magazine we looked
at existing products and used them as examples to help
structure ours. We did the same for our poster and instead
of having half of Mason’s face we did one showing his full
face and the hand covering his mouth. Furthermore we
then used more synergy by adding this into our trailer.
The audience feedback helped to shape our production for
both our poster and magazine since it helped to improve
them so they follow the codes and conventions needed for
our genre.
15. Audience Feedback For THE
‘TARDIGRADE’ TRAILER
After we had finished the second draft of our
trailer, we asked some potential audience
members what they thought of it and what
they thought that we could do to improve it for
our final cut. We then used this feedback to
greater improve our production.
16. What Were the Responses?
“Could you add in a
shot of a zombie
transformation using a
silhouette maybe?”
“I feel like the shots at
the beginning could be
much quicker since they
are a bit drawn out.”
“Have you looked at
other trailer for ideas
on how to structure
it?”
“I like the music used as
the action kicks in as it
reflect the fast paced
shots”
“Love the zombie
shots, could you add
more? ”
“I like the variety of shots
you have and I think that
you could even be more
creative with some of
them. ”
“Maybe add in
something dramatic at
the end of the trailer?.”
“Survivor shots?”
17. From gathering the feedback on our second draft of our trailer.
These improvements that were mentioned from the audience
feedback has impacted our final production of our trailer. We took
this feedback and went back to the editing stage. For the start of
our trailer we shorten down the panning shots and made them
more quicker so they aren't too drawn out. We then also took the
feedback of having more zombie shots into account and then
added in some more since we wanted to create mystery and
tension for the audience. We even had some of them as quick
shots to develop this.
This then helped to shape our production because it has helped
us to develop our trailer to what it is now and the audience
feedback has helped us greatly improve it so it then will attract our
target audience. We even made sure in our final draft to add in the
production details so our trailer follow the conventions of a trailer.
How Did This Shape Our
Production?
18. TO CONCLUDE
When gathering our audience feedback, we found it
very important for us during the beginning of our
course right to the end. The feedback helped to shape
our main production as well as the ancillary tasks.
From this it then gave us an insight on our potential
target audience and what they look for in zombie
horror movies. We then applied it to our promotional
campaigns for ‘Tardigrade’ and we hoped to be
successful in targeting our audience since we took
most of the feedback on board that was provided.
