2. Purpose
• The purpose of both my main task and ancillary tasks were to promote Giulietta, an up and
coming young female pop artist.
• The main focus on the digipack, magazine advert and obviously is the artist, Giulietta. On the
digipack I mainly focused on the face of the artist so that the audience can become familiar
with her.
• I also included Full length shots of Giulietta to show the audience the full image of Giulietta.
• The camera shots I used in the video also promote the image of the artist, as to follow typical
music video conventions we included lots of close ups and long shots.
• The magazine advert I created follows the purposes of the digipack and music video as it
promotes both the artist and the album. The main feature of the advert is a large mid shot of
Giulietta and a smaller insert picture of the album front cover. The magazine also contains
information of a release date. All this together informs the audience of what he artist is, what
she looks like, what her new album is called and what it looks like and also when it is
available to be purchased.
3. Mise-en –scene/iconography
• In all my products, music video, digipack and magazine advert I have used similar codes of visual
language to link them together.
• In the magazine advert and digipack I have used facial expressions, body language, colour
connotation and use of lighting.
• The dominant facial expression used in my ancillary products is a happy seductive smile. This
connotes the personality of the artist and also the style of music. From this the audience will know
that the music will upbeat.
• The dominant colours used in the ancillary products are bright ones. This again suggesting the
happy personality of the artist and the upbeat tempo of the music.
• In my filming and photograph taking I went out at the same time of day each time. This maintaining
the brightness of each shot as most of the time I was out in the morning. The brightness of the
shots connotes to the audience the genre of the album and artist because stereotypically pop
video’s are shot in bright areas whereas other genre videos such as rock stereotypically use darker
locations.
• In all 3 of my products the main we shot we have used are a close up and a long shot. In both of
these types of shot we can see the mood of the artist. The audience can constantly see the artist
smiling in the close ups that we use in all our products which suggests to the audience the tempo of
the music is upbeat and happy.
• In a long shot I have used in our video, the audience can see the artist skipping to the music. Again
this shows the happiness of the artist which reflects back to the genre and tempo of the music.
4. Representation/Image
• In all of my promotional products I have consistently used similar shots of my artists so that
she comes off looking similar in all the products.
• The 2 dominant shots I used throughout the music video and ancillary products were close
up’s and long shots. These two shots were key to use for the audience to see the image of
Giulietta I wanted to create. The close up’s gave the audience a chance to see the artists face
while the long shots enabled the audience to see the whole of Giulietta including parts of her
body with sexual appeal such her legs, stomach and neck line.
• From the work I have done on the promotional products it think my artist has the look of
innocence. This is not a dominant stereotype linked with a young artist as the mainstream
stereotype of youth is quite negative these days as audiences see a lot of negative focus on
young people from the media.
• Another image that “Gulietta” gives off is that she is a fashionable pop star as she is wearing
part dress and leggings. Many fans like artists because of the things they wear as well as their
music. The clothes she wears also portrays the innocence of the artist as she is wearing
clothes that cover up parts of her body that other female pop artists highlight about
themselves such as their legs or chest
• “Giulietta” also has some sex appeal as she is a young charismatic artist with an attractive
figure. The party dress that “Giulietta” wears does slightly reveal a part of her stomach and
back. Showing off parts of the body with sexual appeal helps give “giulietta” a more attractive
image”.
