How effective is the combinationof your main product and ancillary
texts?
Throughoutthe creationof the magazine coverand filmposterIwasconstantlytryingto keep
recurringthemesinall of themthat representthe charactersinthe film.
To reflectthe portrayal of the characters inthe filmtrailerIcreatedthe magazine covertoreflect
theirexperiences.Forexamplethe waythatthe backgroundisformed more aroundthe character of
Jake symbolisesthe strugglesthathe goesthroughinthe trailerandhow he feelslike he is
descendingintodarknessashe doesn’tknow whatishappeningaroundhim.ThisalsolinkstoDr
Mark andhow he isin the lightpart of the magazine cover, itreflectsthe control andawarenessthat
he has throughout the film.The waythat hishandsare on Jakesshouldersshowshow he isable to
manipulate himthroughoutthe filmbyplayingwithhisfeelingsandweakenedsense of morality.
I have usedsimilarthemesinthe filmposterthroughthe use of the silhouette of DrMark standing
at the centre of the poster.I usedthistosymbolise how he isthe keymanipulatoratthe centre of
the plotthat causesall of the problemstoJake throughoutthe film, andthroughthe use of the
silhouetteeffectitcreatesmysteryastowho thatcould be. I have done the same withthe character
of Jake as inthe posterhe has beensplitintotwodifferentsectionswithhalf of hisface oneachside
of the poster.Itwas the same picture that wasusedfor bothimagesandI did thisbecause itseemed
like there were twoseparate expressionsbeingshownonhisface.Thislinkstothe ideathathe is
losingcontrol anddriftingfurtherintothe darkness,alsohintingslightlyatthe ideathathe isdivided
and becomingadifferentperson comparedtowhohe wasbefore. Ihave also continuedthe colour
scheme of blackand white fromthe magazine tothe filmposter.Thisissimilartofilmssuchas
ShutterIslandwhichisalsoa thrillermeaningthatI have followedconventionsof filmpostersand
magazine coversaswell asthrillerconventions.
The elementof control thatDr Mark has isshowninthe trailerina subtle way,thiswouldbe during
the momentthat Jake hashimpressedupagainstthat wall while questioninghim, andinsteadof
actingviolentlyhe simplyasksJake aquestionthatmakeshimquestionhimself.
The combinationof the trailerandthe filmpostermakesitclearto the audience thatitis a thriller
filmthattheywill be watching.The use of the mainimage onthe film posterhasa directcorrelation
withthe portrayal of the character inthe film.The postershowshimas beingdivided,anditisclear
to see that inthe trailerthat he isbeingdividedbythe people aroundhim. Thisisevidentinthe
trailerinthe confrontationscene,whichshowshimturningagainstone of the few peoplethathe
shouldbe able totrust completely.Thiscanbe referencedagainatthe pointthat he feelshe needs
to spyon himas he followshimthroughthe woods.
The combinationof the three taskscome togetherwell toshow a thrillerfilm.Eachone of the tasks
helpstocreate a differentpartof the story of the film.The traileritself helpstosetthe characters
and basicplot.The magazine posterusesitscolourscheme andmodel positioningtocreate an idea
of whatthe characters are like,controllingandsubmissive,andalsoshowshow theyare opposites.
The backgroundhelpstocreate ideasabouttheircharactersas well.The filmpostercompliments
thisshowingthe metaphorical divideinJake inaliteral way,andthroughshowingDr Mark as the
mysteriousfigure thatJake see’sinordertocreate conflictbetweenthem.

I have done the same withthe character of Jake as inthe posterhe has beensplitintotwodifferentsectionswithhalf of hisface oneachside of the poster.Itwas the same picture that wasusedfor bothimagesandI did thisbecause itseemed like there were twoseparate expressionsbeingshownonhisface.Thislinkstothe ideathathe is losingcontrol anddriftingfurtherintothe darkness,alsohintingslightlyatthe ideathathe isdivided and becomingadifferentperson comparedtowhohe wasbefore. Ihave also continuedthe colour scheme of blackand white fromthe magazine tothe filmposter.Thisissimilartofilmssuchas ShutterIslandwhichisalsoa thrillermeaningthatI have followedconventionsof filmpostersand magazine coversaswell asthrillerconventions.
