Evaluation Question 2:
How effective is the
combination of your
main product and
ancillary texts?

Main Product
• My product is a documentary called BBC: Behind The Scenes.
As the name suggests it’s about what goes on behind the
scenes of the BBC. It features interviews with Roger Johnson,
a presenter on North West Tonight, Kevin King, a floor
manager for BBC Breakfast and Phil Smith, an editor, as well as
numerous stylized shots and montages with a voice over.
Ancillary Text 1
• My first ancillary product is a newspaper ad which features a
still of the BBC breakfast sofa on the set taken from the
documentary, the title of the documentary, a slogan, when the
documentary is being aired and the BBC One logo indicating
what channel it’s going to be shown on. and Radio Ad both
advertising the documentary.
Ancillary Text 2
• My second ancillary product is a radio advert also advertising
the documentary. It features ‘The City’ by The 1975 as a sound
bed which is also used in the documentary, audio clips from
the documentary and a voiceover saying the slogan and the
time and channel that the documentary will be shown on.
I think that the combination of my main product and the
ancillary texts is quite effective as they all link well. The
radio advert uses clips from the documentary as well as a
song that features on it. The newspaper advert contains a
still from the documentary and then adds a slogan that
makes the documentary seem interesting as it’s a
rhetorical question. Another link is that the font used for
the titles in the documentary is the same as the one used
for the newspaper advert. All three would appeal to the
same audience as they all tie in together therefore I think
that the combination of my main product and ancillary
texts is quite effective.

Evaluation question 2

  • 1. Evaluation Question 2: How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts? Kris Leonard
  • 2. Main Product • My product is a documentary called BBC: Behind The Scenes. As the name suggests it’s about what goes on behind the scenes of the BBC. It features interviews with Roger Johnson, a presenter on North West Tonight, Kevin King, a floor manager for BBC Breakfast and Phil Smith, an editor, as well as numerous stylized shots and montages with a voice over.
  • 3. Ancillary Text 1 • My first ancillary product is a newspaper ad which features a still of the BBC breakfast sofa on the set taken from the documentary, the title of the documentary, a slogan, when the documentary is being aired and the BBC One logo indicating what channel it’s going to be shown on. and Radio Ad both advertising the documentary.
  • 4. Ancillary Text 2 • My second ancillary product is a radio advert also advertising the documentary. It features ‘The City’ by The 1975 as a sound bed which is also used in the documentary, audio clips from the documentary and a voiceover saying the slogan and the time and channel that the documentary will be shown on.
  • 5. I think that the combination of my main product and the ancillary texts is quite effective as they all link well. The radio advert uses clips from the documentary as well as a song that features on it. The newspaper advert contains a still from the documentary and then adds a slogan that makes the documentary seem interesting as it’s a rhetorical question. Another link is that the font used for the titles in the documentary is the same as the one used for the newspaper advert. All three would appeal to the same audience as they all tie in together therefore I think that the combination of my main product and ancillary texts is quite effective.
