How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
In my magazine the social groups that I have
represented are late teens to young adults 17-
25, people who like dance/electronic
music, people who like to party and go out, also
people who like skating/bmx’ing. I have
represented both male and female audiences.
I have represented these social groups by adding in bright
and vibrant colors, which reflect their fun lives.
I have also used puffs, which say ‘win Global Gathering
tickets’, which is a big electronic music festival, which
would be relevant to my target audience.
I have also used images of different people who represent
the social group, and images of somebody on a BMX bike.
I have also used taboo language in my double page
spread. I have represented these social groups in a
stereotypical way, which maintains a dominant ideology
of the group.
On my front cover I have
used an image of my
friend Nat. Her clothing
and the background
represent the social
groups I am trying to
appeal to. Her clothing is
typical of this and so is
her overall look. She is
wearing bright
colors, which fits in with
the house style of the
magazine.
On my contents page I have
used another image of my
friend Gemma. She also looks
typical of the social group, with
died red hair. She is also
wearing a low cut top, which
also represents the social
group. As everyone knows sex
sells, and the music my
magazine is about (electronic
music) is all about raves and sex
falls into this category. I have
also used an image of my friend
on a BMX bike, which fits in
well with the style of the
magazine.
I have used as many images as I have written
text, to appeal to my target audience, as I know
that many people of that age would get bored
reading blocks of text. Photos make it more
interesting and appealing. In my double page
spread I have asked a new artist questions about
her rise to fame, I did this so it wouldn’t seem as
much text to read and I laid it out like this so I
would be more appealing and interesting.
