Evaluation Question1: In what ways does your mediaproduct use, develop, orchallenge forms
and conventionsof real mediaproducts?
Cavaliere Trailer
Key Moments:Settingthe scene isa verygoodelementinwhichmytrailerproduceswhichusesand
developssome of the formsof real mediaproducts,Iknow fromresearchthatsettingthe scene
withinatrailerespeciallywithinmygenre isessential, andIthinkive notonlydone thatbut tookit a
stepfurther.Ibelieve thatIhave takenita stepfurtherby creatingmore unique anddiverse camera
shots,forexample withinthe castle scenesIutilisedaGoProto performsome 360 footage,aswell
as some wide-angle battlementshots.Joustingsceneswere alsoverypivotal tothe trailer,these
scenesactedas the bulkof the film, challengingconventionsof real mediaproductsbyincluding
these throughoutandnotjustat the centre of the trailer. These shotswere spreadoutacrossthe
trailertimeline,andincludedmostlythe same of those scenes,nottogive toomuchaway,as do
otherfilmtrailerswithinthe real industrymarket.Anotherkeymomentwithinthe trailerwhichuses
conventionsof othe4rtrailerswithinthisgenre isthatof the scenesthatdepictsome religiousvalue
withinthe film, forexample withinmytrailerthere isscenesof aChurch and alsoa cross inwhich
the maincharacter holds.Religionelementsare usedthroughoutthe Medieval ActionAdventure
genre,notonlyforhistorical accuracy,but to give the filmmore depth,Ichallengedformsbyusinga
cross of the newage, anda church of the 13th
century.
Title:The title withinthe trailerisshownatthe endingcredit, thisusesthe mainbasisof most
trailersoutinthe real mediaindustry, whomuse the endtofinishthe trailerpiece.Ihave developed
it howeverbyhavingthe title come fromandflow fromascene and shotwithinthe trailer, thishelps
for continuityandoverall betterending.
Main Stars/ Directors: As withthe majorityof trailersthatare outwithinthe marketat the
moment,theyinclude certaincreditsandtitles,mainlythatof the mainstarswithinthe filmand
directorstoo.WithinmytrailerI have includedthe name of the directorandthe mainstar, now I am
challengingthe conventionof havingseveralstarscreditswithinthe trailer,asIbelieve the true
mainstar shouldonlyappearinthe trailer;italsohelpsthe audience identifythe name withthe
character theysee onscreen.
On ScreenText: These consistof Taglinesandvariousothertitleswhichappear, now Ihave useda
tagline thatfollowsnotonlythroughthe trailerbutall the waywithinthe twoancillaryproductstoo,
nowI noticedthatmany taglinesthat are usedwithinmygenre of trailerstendtobe placedeitherat
the beginningorend.Ichose to positionthe tagline atthe beginning, thereforeIhave usedthe
placementof othertrailers,butchallengedthoseformswithinotherActiontitleswhichuse atagline
withinthe middle of atrailerorat the endbythe finishedendtitle.
Music & Sound: Sound isa majorcomponentof the trailer, andit bothuses, develops, and
challengesreal life mediatrailerproducts.Firstly,mytrailerusesmusicthatisverymuch
appropriate tothe genre, matchesthe scenes, andissimilartothat of in trailerswithinthe same
genre.Itdevelopsonothermediaproductshoweverbyintertwiningothersoundeffectsalongside
the mainsoundtrack,emphasizingcertainmomentsandcreatingabetterflow.Itchallengesother
forms, butusinga veryupbeatsoundtracktocoverthe mainbasisof the atmosphere of the trailer,
whichhas notbeendone bymanyfilmswithinthe genre,itusuallyshiftsfromone toanotherbut
keepingthe same all the waythroughhasallowedme tocontainthat actionelementof the trailer.
2. Cavaliere Poster
Main Image: WhenI lookedatthe maincomponentsof a movie posterIdiscoveredmanydifferent
things, butthe crucial componentwasthe mainimage, now justalike otherswithinthe real world
mediaproductsI includedaverypowerful mainimagefordisplay.Ialsohada photoshootfor the
posterwhichiswhat the professional studiosdoinreal circumstancesforthe industry,Iusedgreen
screen, lightboxesandeverythingrequiredforaprofessional image.Idevelopedthe image through
Photoshop,andeditedminute details,suchasthe reflectiononthe armour,andtook a riskby
shootingreflectiveobjectsonagreenscreenwhichmanyfilmmakers woulddare todobecause of
the editingrequired.
Background: Alike manyotherfilmcompanieswhenchoosingthe backgroundforafilmposter,I
chose a pre-made background,thisissimplybecauseitwaseasiertoedit,andmore time efficient.
Many otherfilmproducersdothistoo,but others(more professional)dotake theirownbackground
pictures.Ichallengedthe formof backgroundsby usingastock image of a Portcullis, andplacingmy
mainimage of the knightontop,I couldeditthe backgroundverywell beingavector, andall things
wentsuccessful overall.
Title & Tagline:Whenlookingatthe title onthe posterandalso the tagline, initiallywhathadtobe
decidedwasthe placementandpositioning,now fromotherpostersIhadlooked atand analysed,I
couldsee that there wasvariousplacesthathad beenused.Howeverthe majoritywere thatboth
the title andtagline were placedatcentre of the image,or justbelow, therefore I usedwhatIhad
seenfromreal mediaproducts.
Credits:I usedformsand conventionsof real mediapostersbyusingcredits,andlocatingtheminto
similarplacesinwhichthe majoritydo,howeverIchallenge formsbyusingalesseramountthat
whatwouldusuallybe seenonaposter,and I thinkdevelopingaposterinwhichliesmore onthe
filmthanthose whoare included.
Cavaliere Magazine Cover
Main Image: The mainImage I usedwas capturedwithfairlyprofessional equipment,I usedagreen-
screen, lightboxesandagood dslrcamera. This waseffectiveand challengedformsof real media
products,as I wasable to use lowcost equipmenttoproduce aprofessionalimage, unlike bibtime
filmproducerswhowouldhoweveruse the same type of equipment, itwouldbe more expensive
and professional.
Background: Justlike the poster,Iuseda backgroundthat I foundonthe interenet, afree use
background.Thiswasveryefficientandonce Ihad foundanappropriate image, all thingswere ago
and itworkedoutverywell.Ichallengedthe formsof real mediause backgroundsastheywould
take theirown, howeverIthinkIhave shownthat a postercan be developedjustaswell andaseasy
by usinga pre-made andpre-tookimage.
Texts: The textusedon the magazine cover, specificallythe placementinthistalk, wasinspiration
and researchfromotherspecificallyEmpire magazinesthatIhadsaw and analysed. The size of the
textwascrucial, not too big, andnot too small, andithad to be placedin locationsthatwere not
goingto take away fromthe mainimage and still be there viewableforthe audience.
Buzzwords: I useda numberof buzzwordsforthe magazine cover, howeverIchallengednormal
conventionsof magazine coversbyincludinglessthanusual,Iincludedonessuchas“FirstLook”,
sand “Free”butI didnot wantto go overboardwiththem, asI wantedthe mainfocusto be onthe
filmanditsmain image.
