2. Research
The period in which I researched, evaluated and began cultivating my own ideas in
order to begin the construction my products.
3. BLOGGER
Blogger was the primary source for the content of my
coursework throughout the project. I used it to import
and collate my work, I could also post video logs in
order to update and reflect on my progress. This
program was very flexible in regards to what it allowed
me to publish i.e. photos, youtube videos etc. and was
the perfect tool for showing the progression of my
work.
4. SCANNER/ MAC
The scanner was used to copy files i.e. flatplans. This piece of equipment was useful
as it meant that I could produce content that wasn’t created using a computer.
The Mac was used to access all of the technologies suggested in this PowerPoint
and was a cornerstone in the production of my product.
5. INTERNET
The internet was a vital tool in the creation of my coursework due to its vast, flexible
usage possibilities. I used the internet to research other products and to access
tools such a Prezi ,which allowed me to produce online, interactive presentations.
It also allowed me to access blogger (which was previously mentioned), which
was used to collate my work into one area. Fortunately, all of these technologies
were easy to operate, due to have previous experience with them also the fact
that they’re designed with ease of use in mind.
6. YOUTUBE
Youtube was used to upload test footage, my final product and any other relevant
videos. YouTube allowed me to view industry-standard trailer that I could take
inspiration from in order for me to produce a better trailer.
7. CONSTRUCTION
The process of filming my trailer and photographing the images required for my
poster. This period also included the creation of call sheets, recce’s , model
release forms etc.
8. CANON EOS 550D
This was the camera I used for my photography and filming in my
project. I used primarily used the 50mm 1.4/f lens though the
18-50mm f/3.5-5.6 was also used in some shots. Towards the
start of my project I did numerous test shots for my project in
order to gain further experience into filmmaking. It became
evident that I needed to used particular expose, f/stop and
ISO settings depending on the shot. This was a result of one
test shot sequence that was filmed in low light left me with
indecipherable footage. Also, the lower f/1.4 of the 50mm
meant that this lens would produce a much more
distinguished shot in low lighting.
9. CAMERA STABILISER
The Glide Gear syl 3000 was used numerously
during the filming of my trailer in order to
stabilise moving shots. To use this tool correctly,
I was required to use the provided weights
correctly in order for the stabilisation of the shot
to be of the greatest possible quality.
Unfortunately as this equipment was not
industry-standard, it did not offer total
stabilisation, though post-production in after
effects did assist in helping this.
10. LIGHTING
Due to my equipment being quite limited, I managed to
use homemade equipment to enhance my shots. I
used a desk lamp in order to add extra light to a
scene, I would also add some pieces of paper over the
front of the desk lamp in order to create a light-box
like effect. Also, I found by using natural lighting from
outside (i.e. choosing to shoot outside), made my
shots naturally clearer and caused less problems. I
also chose to shoot outside during the ‘twilight’ hour,
which is the hour before sunset where a lot of soft
lighting is created.
11. TRIPOD
The tripod is one of the most basic pieces of equipment in amateur film
production, as they’re cheap and ready available. It was used to
create steady shots and improve the viewing quality for the viewer.
12. POST-PRODUCTION
The process of constructing the products having already researched and filmed
all the necessary shots to produce the final products.
13. PHOTOSHOP
Having had little experiencing using Photoshop (as I produced a moving-image product during
my AS work), I was required to produce two pieces of print product as a part of my
coursework. These pieces included a film poster and magazine cover. Bearing in mind that I
had little experience, I believe that thorough research was one of the main factors governing
the success of my print products. Though I could not simply produce a high-quality print
product having knowledge of what makes a good poster, but not how to actually make one.
Therefore, prior to making my products, I sought out much practise using the program, this
included from my prelim work to following online tutorials. My poster was created gradually
through multiple drafts, I followed audience feedback, improved the product, developed some
more and repeated this process until the poster was complete. The poster generally consists
of a grungy texture, with a main image, border, text and other stylisation overlaid with some
filters/effects. The magazine was created by following some stylistic choices of the magazine
‘Little White Lies’, such as its minimalist nature. However, the main image was created by
following a tutorial online which showed me how to overlay text and wrap it around an image
to create a new image.

15. ADOBE AFTER EFFECTS
This program was used for the entirety of the post-production for my film trailer. I
already had much experience with this program in the past, therefore operating it
was not a problem. However, in comparison to the work I did for my AS
coursework, I feel that I used the program much more efficiently. For example, my
animation had vastly improved (when referring to the intro’s and intertitles I
constructed. To create the ‘Mallen Films’ intro, I used the plugin ‘Element 3d’
create a 3d text animation. The plugin ‘Optical Flares’ was also used to create
animated lens flares. A series of other effects were applied to further develop the
intro and make it look more professional. The intertitles were created using a
camera, creating text for the intertitles and animating the 3D Y axis of the camera
in order to make it seem like the text was flying towards the camera.
16. After Effects was also used during the research and evaluation stage of my
coursework. I created presentations by creating a text with a relevant video next
to it. These videos always contained some stylisation that included a background
(often animated) and other features related to the style of the background song
playing. During the evaluation process, one typography video was created to
answer one of the evaluative questions. I used my own knowledge of after effects
and some online tutorials to create this effect
17. COLOUR GRADING
Colour grading or colour grading is the process of altering and enhancing the
colour of a motion picture, video image, or still image either electronically,
photo-chemically or digitally. To enhance my footage I applied a tritone,
shadow/highlight and used the internal plugin ‘SA colour finesse 3’. This
plugin allowed me to asses each individual colour in each shot so that I could
adjust the colours in each shot so that all the colours were equalised. The next
two slides shows this process.

20. CONCLUSION
In conclusion, it’s evident that new media technologies were crucial to the creation of
my products and without them, it would not have been possible. Due to web 2.0
and the proliferation of technology, people can now produce their own films and
create their own products, though not to an industry standard, it does offer
opportunity to advance skills and pursue a career in numerous businesses. In
comparison to my AS work, I have use many more technologies in the production
of this product (such as advance colour grading with ‘colour finesse 3’ in After
Effects), though this is often the case for industry standard products, as
technology gets better, people have the ability and are required to make use of
this technology in order to create a better product.
