In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
Double Page Spread
Double Page Spread
Image
Every music magazine that I have looked at has a double
page spread where the image stretches across both
pages, with the focal point on the left page. Usually the
background of the image is plain, however for my D.P.S I
chose to develop this convention and leave the original
background in. I did this not only because it looked great
when I blurred the right page and kept the detail in the
left page, but because my magazine needs to use some
conventions and challenge some conventions to help
connote the fact that the magazine is an indie music
magazine featuring both unheard of artists and well-
known artists.
Layout
The layout of my D.P.S is quite typical of an
interview style format. The left hand side is
mainly taken up by the focal part of the
image, the text is on the right page and is
layed out in 3 columns, the heading for the
D.P.S is a pull quote taken from the interview
and runs through the centre of the text, and
it features a link to the magazine website
that links with the article.
The double page spread uses these
conventions as they work well and it is a safe
option that ensures that the readers have a
familiar layout and can work their way
through it easily.
House Style
The house style of my double page spread is
quite conventional for a music magazine.
The colours that run throughout the page
also run throughout all the other pages,
creating continuity and an easy to spot
house style. The fonts (Trebuchet MS,
Tahoma and TW Cen MT Condensed) are
used throughout the magazine because they
are neat, easy to read and fresh connoting
youthfulness.
Overall the page uses conventions of D.P.S. I
chose to do this as it makes the reader
familiar with it, and by changing it would
make it look less like a typical D.P.S and
make it unregonisable.
