Evaluation Question 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Our Media Product A Single Release A Music Video
Synthpop Novelty Pop/ Viral Retro 80s Divine Genre
Our Inspirations RuPaul: RuPaul, is an American actor, drag queen, model, author, and singer-songwriter She is famous for her eccentric ways and over the top glamour Click here to see a RuPaul video “ Supermodel” that has inspired our music video:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2wrU2tkl38 This video is similar to ours in the way it has two main characters; one with a dream/desire and the other who is willing to help. RuPaul is a strong female who is represented as carving her own career and enforcing a strong sense of self; we wanted Stacy to be reflected in a similar way in our video.
Katy Perry- California Girls “California Gurls" is an electro pop song by American singer-songwriter Katy Perry. It serves as the lead single of her third studio album, Teenage Dream. It was released on iTunes on May 11th 2010. The video was directed by Mathew Cullen and was inspired by the work of Will Cotton In the music video, Perry is a game piece in Candyfornia, a game based on poker and board games. I really loved how eccentric and fantastical this video is, it inspired us to think about how we can also make our music video different and over the top using mise- en-scene (MES)
Spice Girls- Wannabe "Wannabe" is an up-tempo pop song that incorporates a mix of hip-hop, rap and dance music. The lyrics, which address the value of female friendship over the heterosexual bond, became an iconic symbol of female empowerment and the most emblematic song of the group's Girl Power philosophy This video is dominated by women which is what we really wanted from our video. This video has 5 lead figures where as we only had one. But the attitude of the 5 women is what we really wanted to use in our video. They all have a over-confident, cocky attitude which is what we wanted Stacy’s character to have so she could overshadow my character as part of her performance; this is a key feature of a media product. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJLIiF15wjQ Click here to view the video to Wannabe.
Analysing our Video This is the first shot our audience see of our music video. The image has a shallow depth of field as only the subject in the foreground is in focus with the rest of the image out of focus. This is a similar technique used in a documentary style film. The audience can see that the in the background a female figure but leaves them with messages The nurses outfit suggests a link to a hospital/surgery starting the video with a serious theme which we later on destroy.
Analysing our video 1. After this first shot we then have a montage of images also relating to surgery and hospitals: ,[object Object]
Putting on surgical gloves2. Stacy’s character is then revealed as the nurse by the use of a medium long shot. Her Reaction immediately tells the audience that she is opinionated and not quite what she may seem 3. We then cut to a high angle shot of my character in bed showing that I'm the weaker of the two character. This also reveals that I am Stacy’s patient putting me under her control
Accelerated Footage For the next section of our video we wanted to give the effect of a dream sequence/ rave ‘freak out’ so we have increased the speed of this particular shot making my character look paranoid and psychotic. This gives the video and upbeat pace and is fitting with the songs increase in tempo Accelerated Footage emphasises the action The video then cuts to a close up shot of my character, the audience. We are the mirror, my character hates the way she looks and is pulling faces to try and cover up the fact she is scared of herself. She looks up to the nurse and “ wants to be like her.” This is where the main message of the video is brought in: “Are we too obsessed with appearance?” “ Does the media control us?”
The Nurse- Stacy Stacy’s character is very dominate and confident. She is shown to have sexual independence throughout the video with movements such as; chest wiggles and groping. As the song delivers a lyrical message the audience now have a visual connection alongside.
Miming Stacy then goes onto mime the chorus which is quite obviously a male voice this challenges the convention that the performers sings his or her part in a music video. This once again shows Stacy’s dominance linking in with the lyric “ I wanna look like her..” The Camera moves in a out of focus while zooming in and out of Stacy’s face, this emphasises the element of the dream suggesting my characters disorientation.
The Supermarket Scene The setting of the video then changes to a supermarket, the establishes shot shows Stacy our dominant lead to be wearing a dressing gown, the audience straight away make assumptions ,[object Object]
Supermarket Chav
Chewing Gum
Greasy HairThe Supermarket- a familiar location the audience can relate to the audience.
Melon Chest The Melon Chest Shot- Key in creating a symbolic sequence- links back to lyrical message while also creating humour for the audience. The Pineapple hat shot- Use of a popular culture reference; The Lady with the TuttiFrutti Hat. We are trying to recreate iconic images are niche audience can relate to.
The Dance Scene This scene I feel has the most comical value in the video. The seriousness of the costumes; a pink ball gown and a black suit and tie is then juxtaposed by the fact neither Stacy or Elliot’s character have any dancing ability. Stacy’s Manic expression is shown through point of you shots this again emphasises her characters obsession with being in control. There is an anger manifesting in her face. This suggests a hidden meaning; maybe Stacy’s character has her own insecurities and the only way she can make herself feel better is by being in control of those weaker then herself. This is again shown through her partners petrified/disgusted look.
Mannequin Pan We used a Tripod to create a smooth pan round the row of mannequins this creates our dream like world again which the audience and characters find unsettling. This section is the bridge of the song. It is a broken/fragmented section. To create this look we have used jump cuts. The Jump cuts keep the pace of the video fast and smooth and fits with the song. The Jump Cuts add that element of fantasy/the dream world.
The Final Sequence For the last sequence we have used sections from each of our scenarios we have journeyed through. But the footage we have used has been sped up to give it a climatic feel showing our video is coming to the end. Our last shot is reduced to slow motion to create a contrast and then faded to black, bringing the video to a full circle as that is how our video originally began. Stacy’s character seems victorious as she has managed to convince the young girl that bigger is better. But this makes the audience think is the Surgery really the answer?
Ancillary 1- Digipak A Digipak is a physical ‘sleeve’ for a CD release. Examples: Front Cover ,[object Object]
Pink and Blue colour scheme.

  • 11. The Nurse- Stacy Stacy’s character is very dominate and confident. She is shown to have sexual independence throughout the video with movements such as; chest wiggles and groping. As the song delivers a lyrical message the audience now have a visual connection alongside.

  • 14. Supermarket Chav
  • 16. Greasy HairThe Supermarket- a familiar location the audience can relate to the audience.

  • 29. Front Cover I have Stacy our main character from our video on the front cover of my Digipak this creates continuity. This is a familiar figure to the audience one which they can relate to our song and video. Bright Colours: Giving it a fun element which is also reflected in the video. The use of the doll was influenced by NickiMinaj’s album The Dolls House Album. Stacy is dress up as a doll; pig tails, pretty dress, lollypop this links in with our theme of plastic surgery and self obsession. What is perfection?

  • 34. Parent advisory symbolFor my Record label I have created my own logo to make my Digipak look more authentic.
  • 35. Inside Left Usually when buying a CD the inside left panel contains the lyrics to the songs on the CD I have challenged this convention and decided to have a simple image again of Stacy and included a quote about beauty which again links back to the themes of our song ‘ Breast is Best’.
