EVALUATION Q2
How effective is the combination of your main product
and ancillary texts?
A successful media product needs other products to support the brand identity in
order to help promote the product and make the brand recognisable. Due to this the
product must be marketed across a variety of platforms, focusing on online and
print.
Along with my documentary extract I have created ancillary products in the form of
a newspaper advert poster and a magazine double page spread. With the intention
of creating a consistent house style through out in order to show that the products
are clearly linked. This was achieved through the use of consistent colour palettes,
typography and images that show clear connections.
INTRODUCTION
NEWSPAPER ADVERT POSTER
TV LISTINGS DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
DOCUMENTARY
TYPOGRAPHY
In myTV listing double page spread and Newspaper poster the same font is used. The
font I chose was Elteka Pro Medium as according to my research this is the closest
font to the official C4 font.
Using the same typography over both of my ancillary products helps to create a sense
of brand identity as it adds continuity to the products as the audience will recognise
the font
IMAGES
The combination of images I have used throughout my
products is extremely effective at creating a consistent house
style as the images on the double page spread clearly relate to
the documentary as I shot them on the same day, ensuring that
he would be wearing the exact same costume with the exact
same mis-en-scene in the form of his bike.
The image on the poster was shot in a race and contains the
same costume as also used in the documentary for some
cutaways of Robert training.
This means that all of the images link together as they all
contain the same mis-en-scene as the documentary, all clearly
show the theme of the documentary and all clearly show the
main character from the documentary.
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK - NEWSPAPER POSTER
I conducted audience feedback to see if people in my target demographic thought my
Newspaper Advert related to my documentary and the feedback I received
categorically confirmed that the combination of the two is extremely effective.
All 16 responses said yes, the
poster clearly relates to the
documentary.
TITLE
The title of my documentary appears clearly on all 3 products. Meaning they are all
branded the same and couldn't’t be mistaken for another brand. This means that the
combination of the products is very effective as it almost impossible to not link the 3
together with the same title displayed.
DATE ANDTIME
I have included the date and time that the documentary will be aired on Channel 4 on
both ancillary products. This links the ancillary products to the documentary as they
are directly advertising the airing of the programme for people to view.
Both products state that the documentary will be on at 10pm, the newspaper poster
says tonight as it is planned to be shown on the day as papers are daily and theTV
listing article says Sunday as magazines are usually weekly.
C4 IDENT / LOGO
On my Newspaper poster the Channel 4 logo is positioned on the right hand side of the
page in the middle and is also scaled quite large meaning it is un mistakenly a Channel 4
programme, ensuring that the audience will know what channel to look for.
In addition to this the first word apart from the documentary title on my double page
spread says Channel 4 follow.. Both of these factors link to the ident at the start of the
documentary explaining that it is brought to you by channel 4. along with this the
channel 4 logo is displayed in the top left corner of the documentary throughout.
APPLYINGTHEORY – SAUSURE - SEMIOTICS
Saussure theorised that all media texts contain signs and signifiers that imply to
the audience how the text should be received.
This can be applied to my media products as the title of the documentary, Fighting
for First, which appears on all of my products implies the hard work and struggle
that athletes go through in order to chase that one goal of coming 1st, or winning
the competition.
Expression of
pain on
subjects face
in image.
CONCLUSION
Many aspects in each of my products work together to link my ancillary products
together and also to my main documentary. Typography, Images, Logos, codes
and conventions, Mis-en-scene and the people used all play a role in creating an
effective combination of ancillary texts and main product.
