The documentary on mobile phones had some mistakes that made parts look unprofessional. Specifically, the background setting of a café was distracting with music and people walking through shots. For the real documentary, lighting and setting will be improved to focus on the interviewees. While cutaways of phones worked well to represent the topic, the interviewee setting could have been enhanced, like adding a phone-related background. The editing was successful at smoothly inserting cutaways and title text. For the next documentary, more creative titles and banners could be used to introduce interviewees. Interview shots and structure will also better follow documentary conventions.

1. Evaluation
My documentary of mobile phones generally went well however some mistakes were made through
the procedure which allowed the final product to look quite improper in parts.
The mise-en-scene lacked as it was very irrelevant to the documentary. As it was filmed in the café
there was many distraction which kept disrupting the shot, there was music in the background which
was very distracting as it was loud enough to hear so it could distract you from the interviewee and
cause you to stop listening to them and start listening to the music. There was also people walking in
and out of the shot, this was a big issue and is something I will take into consideration when it comes
to create my real documentary. When filming my real documentary I will also take the lighting of the
shot into consideration as some of the shots didn’t have the best lighting and causing it hard to see
what we was filming .
There were props used in the documentary as many cut aways incorporated mobile phones to
represent the idea of the context. There were cut always of people texting and calling which related
well to the documentary as a whole. However, we could have improved in set of mise-en-scene as the
interviewees weren't located in a suitable place to link to mobile phones. We could have done this by
creating a blue screen and adding a mobile phone relating picture behind them, this would make it
look more professional and more organised.
The editing process was successful as the cut aways came in efficiently over parts of the
interviews (making the sound of the interviewees, asynchronous) and then smoothly returned back
without any jumpy movements. Also, the text that was added was clear and easy to read for all
audiences such as the title. The title "Mobile Mysteries" was in an italic font which was black with a
white outline, making it easy to see and read. I wouldn’t personally change anything about the title we
used however I think it could be more creative to add a banner with the titles of interviewees names
and how their related to the topic in the real documentary.
The shot sizes of the interviewees were medium close ups, allowing the audience to see their faces in
detail, and parts of their outfits. This was a good shot size and it involved the main parts of what the
audience needed to see. Also, we didn’t follow all of the conventions of a documentary as the
interviewee was looking up towards the camera instead of to the interviewer which was sat beside the
camera on the same level; Next time we will ensure that the interviewer is on one side of the camera
sat down on the same level again but the interviewee is making eye contact at all times.
They also answered each question in a full sentence to portray the question we asked into their reply;
this is because the questions are edited out therefore aren’t shown in the filming.
We used a zoom movement in many of the cut aways; sometimes this looked quite good as the zoom
was sometimes used to show the mobile phone, however in other parts, it was irrelevant and so we
will improve this when we create our real documentary by focusing on the purpose of certain
camera movements.
