For our A2 Documentary Pre-Liminary Task, we were put in to
small groups of 2-3 to film a small Documentary on phones
which we were to film in one lesson and edit in one lesson. We
were given a set amount of questions and had to make a short
clip of a documentary to practice our skills for our final
Documentary.

Planning
We had to plan our documentary on a storyboard. We talked
about what cutaways we would need, what suitable props we
should use for the mise-en-scene and who we would interview.
4. +
The Documentary is all about phones, so for the Mise-en-scene
we decided to place four different types of phones on the desk
where the interviewee was to sit. Because this was a quickly
planned interview, we had to film the interview in an English
room where there were distracting signs in the background. For
my the real documentary, I know to use a plain background and
then add props in for the mise-en-scene.
5. +
We asked someone outside of the group to interview because in
the group I am in there are only two of us. We needed one
person to film and the other to be the interviewer.
6. +
In our documentary, we only include the answers on the
interviewee, but whilst filming the questions will be included
also. When editing we have to cut the questions out which
means we will have jump cuts in between each answer from
the interviewee. This means we have to put a jump cut
between each answer to make the documentary flow right. We
had to choose suitable clips to film. We filmed small clips of
people using their phones in a variation of long shots and
panning shots whilst filming big groups of people and then
close up and extreme close ups on phone screens whilst
people used their phones. Some of our cutaways were shakey
as we used free hand, but we now know for next time to always
keep the camera static and take more time to position the
camera better.

Filming
The filming process of ‘Its Good To Talk’, only took one lesson.
We had both used the camera’s before so found it easy to
handle them. It took a while to get the positioning of the
interviewee and camera right but then after our feedback, we
realized we had got the positioning wrong anyway, but now we
know for our main task the right positioning. Once we had set
up though, we filmed the questions and answers straight
through. When it came to editing though we noticed some
picture and sound problems due to the camera. For our main
task, we now know to double check the camera to make sure it
is working incase it breaks on a interview that cant be reset up.

Editing
When it came to editing our documentary, we used Adobe
Premier Pro. Both had used it before so we already has the
basic skills to start editing.
9. +
We started off with a blank page on Premier Pro. From this we started to take the
answers apart from the questions and bring them onto the main editing part.
10. +
Once I had all of the answers from the clip I separated them
so I could start editing each one individually to make sure
they started and finished with the answer and no blank
filming, this was to make the cutaways once added in, flow
easier.
11. +
Once putting all of the answer clips together, I took all of the
cutaways filmed from the film role.
12. +
Once cutting the cutaways down to the precise clip, we
placed them over the top of each jump cut and on the
correct one so that our documentary would flow smoothly.
13. +
Next we added graphics at the start of our documentary to
introduce it. We did this by using the text box and dragged
our text clip in front of the rest of out film. On the graphics
we put the name of the documentary and our names as
credits.

Lastly we added a soundtrack for our documentary, we
had to turn the sound of this down so it wasn’t too loud
and that it wouldn’t distract the audience.
