Preliminary Task
Evaluation
BY JOE HADFIELD
Cinematography
The cinematography in our documentary is one of our strongest areas, as we followed all of the
conventions of a interview setup for a documentary. We used the rule of thirds, as this is conventional
and allows the interviewee space to talk into. We used a mid shot and ensured that he was positioned off
centre. The camera was situated on a tripod, so that the shot was stable and wasn’t shaky. There is also
an appropriate amount of headspace above the interviewee, which is conventional. The interviewee was
also framed correctly. The only thing that we could improve upon is making the interviewer at eye level,
as our interviewee kept looking up at him which was unconventional.
Editing
The cutaways that we recorded were rather good and were relevant to the topic which we were doing
our documentary on. However, due to the lack of time for editing our documentary we didn’t have time
to place these cutaways over the appropriate response from our interviewee. Therefore the cutaways
ended up being in the wrong order and not relevant to the responses. We used the cutaways effectively
and covered up jump cuts. We also ensured that none of the questions being asked by the interviewer
can be heard in the documentary, as it is conventional to only hear the responses and not the questions.
Mise en scene
The costume that we used for the documentary was a typical students clothing, as we were interviewing
a student. The lighting which we used was natural and meant that you could see the interviewee. We had
already planned out which props we needed, we used a mobile phone and sheets for a homework task.
We used these props in our cutaways. The setting was relevant as it was in a college and you can see a
poster in the background advertising the college, the only bad thing was that there was a fair amount of
background noise in the corridor, so if we were to do the task we would film in a quieter location. Our
interviewee is sat on a chair which is conventional for interviews.
Graphics
We only used graphics once in our documentary, if we had more time we would have included an
introduction. However, due to the short time that we had we could only add the interviewee’s name and
relevancy to the documentary. A huge positive for this was that we used a font that stands out clearly.
Although it didn’t have any relevancy to the topic of the documentary. We did the convention of putting
their name at the top and their relevancy to the documentary below it. It is written on two lines and is
super imposed over the top of the interview. It is the same font on both lines and is easy to read. We
needed to make the relevancy to the documentary smaller than their name, we did do that but we didn’t
make it small enough for it to be noticed.
