I believe that my magazine represents similar social groups to magazines such as ‘XXL’
(which the image on the left is from) because the content is fairly similar. I am going to use
the two images to highlight this. Let’s first consider the direct gaze of the celebrities, this
captures the attention of and addresses the audience.
In terms of gestures the pictures are similar, the last image has a sense of dominance and
almost intimidating tone to it, and similarly, my image on the right features the model
looking serious and has the same direct gaze. This shows a similarity because it shows that
both magazines have an established sense in which the audience have a connection with the
people in the magazine already. Also, both of the magazines have a famous star on the cover,
this creates a connection with the audience because they will be able to identify the stars and
this will convince them to buy the magazine.
As for the angle and shot type of the photos, there is little similarity, the first image is a mid-
shot but is taken from a low angle and the star is standing with his body facing the side.
With my image we can see that the there is also a mid-shot but the angle is level and the
whole star’s body is facing the front.
The lighting is very different in both of these photos because the one of them has a plain
white background and the other is located outside, this suggests that the photo is intended to
attract the audience because of the focus on the star, my photo however, doesn't have a focus
on lighting in particular. You can see that the there is a plain white background, so it is not
clear how lighting was used. This makes the audience focus on the star.
There are some similarities between the costumes in the two images. You can see that both of
the people are wearing jewellery accessories, this really reaches out to the target audience and
shows social representation at its best. One thing to note in terms of similar social groups is
that fact that the men are wearing tracksuits, which is a very common piece of clothing
among the genres and the target audience.
For the expression of the people in the photos which I mentioned briefly before, it is clear
that both the pictures have an assertive body stance and the men have a direct gaze. This
makes the audience relate to the magazine and the content, because they bare familiar with
this behaviour and body language.
